View Full Version : Do you have a 'comfort movie'?

What's your favourite movie to stick on when you're under the weather?

You know; the film that you always turn to in times of trouble (like a couple of days off sick, or after a trauma or two).

Anytime I'm sick I love to wrap up in a duvet on the sofa and stick on Wrath of Khan (Star Trek), or Empire Strikes Back. It's like spending time with old friends.

(perhaps it's just me).

Does anyone else have a 'comfort movie'?

I thought I was the only one!

I watch 'Donnie Darko' or if i'm feeling a bit like a self help mood I watch 'The Wedding Singer'

God, could I be any more of a camp straight man?

'Half a Sixpence' with Tommy Steele....it was a favourite film of my Nana's and after she died it always seemed to be on TV when I was off school ill!!

I found it a sign she was watching over me!!

Hmm, I hadn't realised that I had a "comfort movie" until I saw this thread, but I suppose the one that fits the bill for me would be St. Elmo's Fire. Ahh, the nostalgia of an 80's Brat Pack film!

Aww Sheish, that's sweet.
I have just thought of another one;

'The Sound Of Music'

I can only stand to watch it once a year though as I overdid it in my early teens. (At one point I wanted to become a nun and live on a hillside in Germany)

A comfort movie you say? Has to be "Priscilla - Queen of the Desert". Loads of laughs, and that memorable line - "a cock in a frock on a rock". :hihi: But when they do get to the top of that mountain - you sense that wow feeling!

My other comfort movie (please believe me) is "Last Exit from Brooklyn". Strangely comforting.

Where Eagles Dare, Blazing Saddles, Field of Dreams, Scrooged.

I think I might add 'Lost in Translation' to the list now as well.

I hate these sorts of threads - I can nver think of just one movie to put down! :)

Robocop. I can't think of how many times I've seen this film. It's good for hangovers, too, I've found.

Hana Bi. It's perfect.

depends what mood I am in
If I am feeling very sorry for myself its either of the Bridget jones movies (although I prefer the books)
Or if I hate the world and myself it would have to be Lost Boys and Interview with the vampire (again the books are much better)

I was like this with Fred Astaire films, but they never seem to be on telly nowadays. My favourite dancer was definitely Gene Kelly, but there's something about the old Astaire/Rogers films. They belong in a totally different era, it's almost like time stops when you're watching them. You're back in a time of grace and elegance.

Sister Act, Wedding Singer, Three Men and a Little Lady (I know! Even I'm not sure why I like it!), Evita (sort of. Singing the songs uplifts me even though it's hardly a feel-good story) and Bruce Almighty if I'm in a bad mood with God and want to like Him again!

Perosnally I like war films and can find these comforting. Because they often show people in very difficult situations it is often easy to come away from them counting your own blessings.

By contrast i hate romances, especially involving teenagers.

If I'm feeling sorry for myself I watch Bridget Jones.

If I'm feeling low and need to lighten up I watch the American Pies.

If I just need a damned good cry it's Titanic or Beaches.

I also have an Ally McBeal boxed set that gets me through the more run-of-the-mill, day-to-day stresses. Watching an episode before bed with a cigarette and glass of red wine calms me if life is getting on top of me!!!! I'm getting towards the end of it now though so I need to buy the next series!
