View Full Version : I'm in trouble need help identifying plant!
So... Bubble has dug up my mother's favourite plants...
The last time mum mentioned these plants was to say that she couldn't find them anywhere so was trying to keep them going as she couldn't replace them.
And Bubble, the puppy, has destroyed them.
I can't remember the name to try to replace them so was wondering if you guys could help.
I'm sure she said it was something like Oliver's something but I can't remember it.
They are tall plants with oval shaped leaves (sort of) and white droplets hanging off them.
I'll try to get a photo of the one remaining one but if anyone can identify from the description given I will be most grateful!!
tell her you dug it up to plant some of this (http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/shrubs/cornus-eddies-white-wonder/classid.77615/)
As sweet as that is... I'm not convinced it would work... I'd still be in trouble!
Sorry, your description is too vague- if it's a species of a plant then you need to know that there are thousands of roses, thousands of irises, thousands of tulips and if you need a specific one you need to know the name in order to do that. The less common the plant, the less likely that someone will know what it is just by sight too.
I'm sure that someone will have access to the latest Plant Finder to find supplies of it once you know what it is.
Based on the decription it could be Solomons seal.
Hmm... she has mentioned solomons seal before but I felt sure she had mentioned Oliver's whatever it was...
I'll try to get a photo, though it's looking like I might just have to own up to her to get the name and then find a replacement!
Just looked up a photo of a solomons seal and it does look like that! (Or rather it did...)
rubydazzler 21-05-2010, 17:51 It sounds like Solomon's Seal, maybe it could be a named variety? It's a bit old fashioned these days, but would have thought it would be reasonably easy to get a cutting from someone, even if the garden centres don't have it?
ETA: The other thing I was thinking was a Dicentra, bleeding heart, I used to have a totally white one. But the leaves are more 'ferny'

Oooh you have just reminded me of bleeding heart I love that plant used to have some in my old garden, I'm going to have to hunt some down now Ruby and that means spending more money on the garden :hihi:
Lotti yes it does sound like solomons seal you are after, have you got a picture?
Starlet83 21-05-2010, 18:06 I think I know what you mean... but cannot for the life in me remember what it is called... Aaaaargh! Nightmare!

Could it be anything like this, I did have another in mind but it still wont come to me.
not sure that would be in flower yet up here Starlet, but I could be wrong. My thought was solomons seal too, mine is in flower just now.
Thanks guys. I owned up and it is indeed Solomons Seal! Thankfully though, mum went to a garden centre today with her mum and saw it there so I can replace it :)
Thanks guys!

But I do like white flowers a lot. I was very pretentious and had a "white border", white lilac, dicentra, solomon's seal, lavatera, and all white annuals. I might do it again, it was very striking but you need a shady area and they tend to go over a lot quicker than the colour varieties.
At one point my whole garden was made up of white and black (queen of the night tulips, Iris germanica Helen Proctor, ophiopogon nigrescens, black dogwood and lots of white flowers from foxgloves and lilies to white potentilla and campanula) and it was very effective. These days I've got more of a riot of colour and I'm a lot less bossy around what and where plants are in my garden.

Thanks I've been and got a white one today and it looks stunning, I also like white flowers especially white geraniums in tubs!
Medusa, Queen of the night tulips are my favourite and I have a whole area dedicated to them, its a bit over the top but I love em :hihi:
