Well maybe if we behave the Mods will merge us into one Super Ashes thread :D
But I'm gonna back England to do this.. If not to wipe that smug grin of 'Shaney'

Leave your car sunroof open.
Plan a barbecue
Greet a stranger with the phrase "Ooh, lovely weather we're having, isn't it?"
Dress in tissue paper
Hang your washing out
Take a day out at the seaside
Have a picnic
Get the lawnmower out

more rain plaese.....................
SpiderPete 11-09-2005, 12:24 Well we are fighting back again, wickets falling and falling, and the Grand Prix is also on the same time, what does one watch
Should England have taken the light? ..... or do you agree with Mike Atherton that it was unsporting?
SpiderPete 11-09-2005, 14:12 They should have taken the light.
If the role was reversed and I am sure Australia would have done the same, we are on the brink of a momentus ashes win.
unsporting? They would have done the same in the same position. you face a 90 mph Brett Lee when you can't see the ball. Same with Warne. how can you judge something you can't clearly see?
Cardinal 11-09-2005, 16:07 Absolutely, get in!! Looks doubtful if any play tonight but still a day to go tomorrow. Here's hoping but 'not counting any chickens etc etc if and until...... ;)

Mr Atherton never said it was unsporting, he simply said the umpires made the wrong decision..
Australia took the bad light and to be honest, it wasn't really that dull..
No rules have been broken, this has simply played to Englands Advantage, although I would have preferred an all out playing battle :D

Also, Warne's ball a minute ago....holy cr@p!!

trescothick gone as well, I know this is unpatriotic but I can see us chucking the ashes away:confused:

It reminds me of how I felt at half time when I was in Istanbul for the Champion's league final.
It's not nice.
BUT Freddy will be revved up to go at them now, he will not be happy.
We can still do it.
BELIEVE
Im not alone in thinking the hopes are fading fast but I wish we'd not take risks, just play defensive and stay in for GODS SAKE!
127 for 5 at lunch. Our hopes lie with Pieterson, Collingwood and Jones, maybe a bit of help from Giles, Hoggy and Harmison :help: :help: :help: :help:
Cardinal 12-09-2005, 12:08 It's so English to 'grab defeat from the jaws of victory'. Reminds me of the penalty shoot-outs for the England football team!! :(

Lets have a bit of optimism!
We're still scoring at an ok rate. A few more hours at the crease (minimum) and the Aussies will have their work cut out for them.
BELIEVE!
Cardinal 12-09-2005, 12:13 No no no, it's better to be pessimistic - then at least you're not let down!! ;)
So much for Freddy - gave his wicket up with that shot!!
check out the ashes log on the Beeb site - some funny stuff there!!
SpiderPete 12-09-2005, 12:51 Oh dear this is gonna be another nail biting match, 173-5
I can hardly watch it, if Petersen stays in we could get a good score, but you can sense it is gonna be close, hope not.
where is this rain ??????
Greenback 12-09-2005, 13:53 Cripes. This is incredibly tense. 200-7 – the entire series comes down to what happens in the next hour.
Gulp.

Haha what rain, come on England so close, just bat it down to 30 overs with a lead of 285 and then just give the ball a thumping, doesn't matter if we get bowled out then. I feel we could even get a few Aussie wickets before the end of the day.
SpiderPete 12-09-2005, 15:18 I think we are there now, overs are going now for the aussies

I wouldn't feel comfy until we hit a few more runs and there are about 30 overs left.

Haha, I wonder how many have thought of that one ;) Big shout to Giles for his staying power, we could have lost the remaining wickets. D'oh! just as I write this KP is bowled, Great sportsmanship by warne to go up to him and shake his hand
Sad to hear Richie Benau give his farewell, what a great commentator.
Oh by the way Dick dastrdly, I work sometimes with an Aussi, a very lovely one at that, now do I rub it in that we won or what ;)
SpiderPete 12-09-2005, 16:08 At 4:18 I said it was all over, 17:05 and it is definately all over, well Pietersen brill innings in quick time, and Giles is just as good, we were in trouble when he came in, but not anymore.
Yes sad to see Richie saying his farewells, and also C4 loosing the cricket.
Its been an amazing series, and all the players deserve an OBE, they have been brilliant, all of them, its very much a team effort.
Wayhey Giles scores 50  Lovely stuff lads
I will be sad to see the end of Benaud, he is surely one of the giants of the game, however the same was said of Arlott, and Johnson when they retired yet another great commentator pops up.........who will replace Benaud?
Zinger549 12-09-2005, 17:22 YESS WE ONE    START THE PARTY

Well done the lads and I just hope that the footballing prima-donnas have taken note of what 'commitment', 'sportsmanship', 'endurance', 'pride' and 'guts' looks like - and is responded to by the English public.
And a big well done to the Umpires as well.

I like Boycott though, his xenaphobia can be very amusing.
Did anyone else notice they kept him off the the commentary once it became clear we would win?!
:hihi:
Ousetunes 13-09-2005, 08:07 I said before this test series that I wouldn't be surprised if England won it. What I didn't expect was the manner in which they bounced back from that first defeat at Lords, continuously rescuing what seemed - at various points - lost causes.
Time and again, this England side found something that has been lacking - when one batsman failed, another gave the innings of his life. The 'tail wagged' (Giles hit 59 for crying out loud!), we have a decent middle order in Pietersen and Freddie and we have a bowling attack which, at least with the fast bowlers is very strong (Freddie, Simon Jones, the dependable Hoggard and Harmison).
And we have a captain who is calm, knows what he is doing and who has the full respect of his team. (He also showed that when you are up against it, you don't lose your rag like Ricky Ponting did.)
To me, the winner was cricket. I've watched England since the mid to late 70s and this was by far the most entertaining, gripping and at times, painful series I have ever watched.
But the spirit in which it was played and the way in which the Aussies have gracefully accepted defeat is what won it for me. This cricket was played with smiling faces and today is a day to be proud to be English and possibly a good opportunity for football to take a good look at itself.
Well played Vaughan and the lads.
daverity 13-09-2005, 09:03 I just love this post on the ABC cricket forum yesterday, from yes the Administrator!!!!!!!!!!
Hayden and Langer have just be offered and accepted the light to go off. You weak gutless mongrels, you couldn't even go down in this series with a fight.
You two pricks sicken me and I'm embarassed to call myself an Aussie.
I'll volunteer to lead the lynch mob awaiting your return you gutless bloody wonders.
My 'other family', Australian cousins and 2nd cousins appear to have taken their phones off the hook and aren't responding to emails either, hah hah. What goes around comes around :hihi:
Great for the country and great for the game too:thumbsup:
carcrash 13-09-2005, 09:54 paul hogan, errol flynn, ned kelly, rolf harris, mel gibson, muriel off of muriel's wedding, steve irwin - can you hear me steve irwin? your guys took a hell of a beating.

Fantastic stuff... not usually into cricket (although will often watch England if there's nothing else on), but have been rivited to this Ashes series right through.
Great series, great cricket and a well deserved win for England!

As I was coming home on the bus I saw in Stannington park a group of kids about 13 years old playing cricket, I have not seen that since I played it there with my mates when we were 14/15 that was 8 years ago

muddycoffee 15-09-2005, 08:47 How I chortled with mirth this morning
When I read in this morning's paper that the GPO are issuing a set of cricketing stamps to celebrate the historic England Cricket Ashes Victory.
I nearly spilled my morning Vodka when I read further that the 68p stamp, needed to send a letter to Australia would be a significant part of the set.
With Australia still in their period of mourning, I find this incredibly insensitive, talk about pouring a litre of battery acid into a gaping fresh wound.
GOOD
CaptainSwing 15-09-2005, 14:52 Sport isn't that important, but it's almost tragic that after all he's done for Australia in general, and in this series in particular, the Ashes were lost because of a fairly easy slip catch fumbled by Shane Warne.
A fair result though, overall - we outplayed them session for session for most of the series after Lord's. The achievement is even better when you remember that the last time we won the Ashes it was against an Australian team still weakened by the fallout from the Packer 'rebellion' (if I remember rightly).

My sentiments exactly.
We dont need to be taking the **** in this country- yes we have won the ashes, imagine what the aussies are going to be like next year if they win it back- which they probably will- if we take the **** out of them now- after winning the ashes once in x amount of years, they will give it us back tenfold next year if they win.
