Just heard some of their music from the hunting high and low and stay on these roads album and was impressed.

The writing and music is excellent.

Why dont we hear anything like this anymore?

The Yamaha DX7 sounds good on almost every record, along with the phat analog strings and linn drum beats.

A-ha's last 2 albums had some good stuff on them, but just like many artists, they seem to be out of fashion sadly.

Yeah they've changed their style and its quite dry and boring. The old stuff was their best.

They're splitting up (again) but for good this time - they're on their farewell tour at the moment and it rolls into Sheffield sometime in November I believe.

I liked a lot of their early stuff (just wish radio stations could see beyond Take On Me and The Sun Always Shines On TV).

Loved Stay On These Roads, Hunting High And Low - what a vocal - and Train Of Thought. Some of it hasn't aged particularly well but if it's retro you want, retro DX7 and synth bass, sling it on alongside Soft Cell, Korgis, Human League (the bass on Sound Of The Crown is dire) and Ultravox and enjoy it for the hell of it!

mattyuk1 - re recording:

When I was younger, yes.

One of my abiding memories is of spending a night in a newly constructed, ie, unfinished recording studio in Driffield in late 1987. I'd put my drum tracks down, we'd finished rhythm, lead and bass parts and were trying to add a little something to one of the tracks by way of the studio's DX7 synth.

About 4am and struggling to stay awake, all I could hear were various, awful sounds coming out of this keyboard - a bit like when you're selecting which ring tone to use on your phone - and just as I was about to drop off hearing yet another racket which startled me awake again!

We never found the 'correct' sound; the engineer never turned up and by 7am we had packed away and had set off for home and a decent breakfast.

Possibly a Roland?

Although I think the bass on Sound Of The Crowd sounds poor, it's the opposite for the underrated Open Your Heart, surely the Human League's finest moment?

That ring sounds like you selected the algorithm in function, then sleceted one of the program frequency coarse buttons, which is what i get when sleceting rate/range keys.
