View Full Version : Parking a trike in Sheffield
Classic Rock 07-09-2005, 10:53 I want to park my trike in Sheffield centre (cultural industry quarter area).
A trike is a modified motorbike so it has three wheels. It is taxed as a motorbike but in the eyes of parking services it cannot be parked in a motorcycle bay. In their eyes it has to be parked in a parking bay or a pay and display car park.
It's the same size as a motorbike (only slightly wider due to the rear wheels), it has the economy of a motorbike and is more environmentally friendly than a car so should be encouraged in the city.
If I pay and display then where the hell do I put the ticket? It'll blow off, get rained on or be nicked by someone!
Before you reply to this with the 'leave it at home and catch the bus' response, give me a break, I want the freedom to bring my vehicle into the city.
Can you think of a way around it or where I can park up?
Had a similar issue once with the car park next to the city hall, where you have to get a parking ticket for motorbikes, as well as cars.
I asked the attendant "where do I stick it, someone might nick it or it could blow away"
He replied "Take it with you"
I said "But then one of you lot will give me a ticket for not displaying the sticker"
He says "Oh yeah, never thought about that - you can always appeal the decision though"
I say "No thanks knobjockey, I'll park it on the street for free"
So in answer to your question - I dont know, but agree its a pain!
muddycoffee 07-09-2005, 11:38 The only thing I can suggest is put it in a multi storey, and then you take the ticket with you.
I don't think they have started yet, but I heard that NCP are starting to roll out special facilities for motorcyclists, including a compound, and a locker in some of their multi storey carparks.
Classic Rock 07-09-2005, 11:41 There are several places in the city where motorbikes can park for free though. I want to park the trike for free (its still a motorbike at the end of the day). Lookin' 4 a loophole...?
Pseudonym 07-09-2005, 11:49 How about converting your trike to a two-wheeler... With stabilisers of course! ;) ... I'll get me coat...
Classic Rock 07-09-2005, 11:51 Useful. Thanks. Anyone else?
Have you tried asking someone at the council? if its a council run car park (dont ask me how you find out if they are council run or not!! :) ) surely they are the peeps to ask?
my kids luuurve bikes/trikes.......when we went camping in july, there was a guy with a trike on our campsite....had 'spider' on the box at the back.......had to drag the kids past it everytime, they just used to stand and look at it in awe!......:D
MuteWitness 07-09-2005, 11:57 i will ask some people on the bike forum for you they might know :)

I already emailed parking services and got a blunt negative response stating that I'd have to pay. I replied back asking how to appeal and what could be done, but didn't have the joy of a reply.

"there was something about it in TWO a couple months back about trikes,
in that it depends on the weight anything above 410kilos = car "
"Maybe you should just park in the motorcycle bay and remove the front wheel , hence its got two wheels , it weighs less than 410kilos and the forks sticking out of the front are a huge side stand"
Classic Rock 07-09-2005, 12:12 Hmmm, will have to find out how much it weighs. I don't think it'll be a lot really. (wondering now how to weigh my trike...!)
Cheers for the link to the Parking Services site....as stated I've already contacted them and just received a negative response.
I don't think they know what to do with trikes to be honest. I think they're more likely to simply state that I have to pay to park to cover themselves.
jackthedog 07-09-2005, 13:28 What stops motorcyclists from having the tax disks stolen?
Is there a lockable holder for the disk? If so, could you fix another one somewhere in plain sight and stick the ticket in that?

IIRC there's a weigh bridge @ Tankersley (not sure whether it's available to the GP though).

nothing just need an allen key to take it off, alot of bikes keep them in there pocket or under the seat even though its against the law if you get stopped the police tolerate it because of alot getting stolen
jackthedog 07-09-2005, 15:46 Bummer.
Why not park at castle court flats, hyde park? It's camera'd up, free and there's a tram stop which is 1 stop from town, right there by the building! I know it's a few minutes from CIQ but you cna get a tram to the train station then you're just across the road(works) from it!

Just cos it's camera'd up doesn't mean that it's safe. I used to stay in those flats and two cars that we had were vandalised/broken into and one was in broad daylight. Once bitten twice shy (©Great White)

The weight has recently changed to 550 kilos.
