View Full Version : Has this forum changed anyone's opinion?
spyro2000 17-08-2005, 15:53 Have you ever had your opinion changed on here while having a debate because of the views that people come up with? If so what was your initial view and how and why did it change?
Im always open to different views and have had my initial view changed many a time, i always keep an open mind no matter how right I think I am, but some people just seem to think that whatever they say is right and will not have it changed no matter what.
I can't remember any exact examples, but I love a good debate on this forum!
My opinion has never changed to become the complete opposite of what it was when I started, because generally I only post if I've got a fairly strong opinion on the subject to begin with.
But I have picked up other ideas as a result of discussions, and learnt to appreciate other people's points of view, even if they don't echo my own.
Some people on here have scarey opinions though! I don't like it when topics descend into slagging matches. I've been involved in one or two myself, because sometimes in the heat of the moment you find yourself typing more aggresively than you should, or furiously defending yourself against the derogatory comments of another. But generally it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
However I've had a few heated discussions when I've parted on good terms with the Forumer in question in the end, and that's quite nice. It's good to have a rant, and it's also educational to debate issues with other people.
Yes, I used to think Ecclesall Road was in Ecclesall.
Didn't take long to be put straight :)

An understandable mistake... at least you didn't think London Road was in London!! :D
I used to think that everybody had some redeeming feature but having spent some time on here I've changed my mind.

Eccy Road itself isn't, but Eccy Road South possibly is :D
Only possibly mind, I don't wish to enflame THAT particular argument again.
redrobbo 17-08-2005, 17:34 I read a lot of different threads, but do not necessarily join in some of the debates - more so when I have not yet formed an opinion on a particular subject. I have on occasions been influenced by the strength of arguments and debate on the forum.
PS Is Abdul certain that Ecclesall Road isn't in Ecclesall? Do we have any independent verification for this information? More to the point - does this affect house prices in the locality, and is this reflected in anyway in the crime figures? I think we should be told! :hihi:

Max is turning bitter and cynical in his... middle age :D

Don't do it redrobbo. You'll grab his attention and he'll come down on you like a ton of bricks! :hihi:
Remember, once you awaken the beast there is no going back :suspect:
i have a fairly high moral stance on some issues, but more than once i have read a post & though "that's interesting, i've never looked at it that way".
in some cases i have fundamentally modified my own opinions.
has anyone else done the same.
youwhatref 07-09-2005, 11:29 Totally agree willman. I have my views although i have read through threads and this has changed slightly once or twice.
There have been a few threads that have slightly modified my views.
I've been more affected by people - some people I've changed my attitudes towards as a result of their posts and general behaviour and attitude. This has been both positiv and negative.
On my own attitudes, I'd say I've become less liberal as a result of being on the Forum! :)

I'd say that's probably true of me too Joe. I find that the Forum has further entrenched my conservative views. People sometimes mistake me as being "lofty" or viewing things from an "ivory tower" but I'm just a straight-laced kind of guy.
BrainThrust 07-09-2005, 12:19 I don't think the forum has changed my opinions on anything to be perfectly honest. I tend to see any criticism as an attack rather than as a counter point and I'm usually fairly reactionary, which is why i read but don't participate in most debates.
It isn't that I don't believe people or think that they have less experience than me, it's just that it is an internet forum and so I still feel anyone could write anything and say that it is true with no absolute way to verify it. I stick to my guns and save the debate for real life where you can also guage a sense of someone's passion about something.
As for changing opinions on people, I try not to make up my mind but as most online personas are exaggerations of real life ones (although they can be completely fake) so I'll take it all with a pinch of salt. I find most people to be friendly and non-aggressive with the others being sometimes arrogant, sometimes crude.
I guess my opinion on people hasn't change duntil I've been at a meet so I guess they don't count either! :hihi:

wearetherobots 07-09-2005, 19:04 It has made me seriously want to move out of Sheffield.
This place is more moronic than the Daily Mail, it's worse than the Sun.

Glad to see your attempts at making the place more highbrow with posts like this. Keep up the good work. :)

It hasn't changed my opinion on anything either to date, though sometimes causes my blood pressure to rise to a previously unknown level. I've never ranted so much in my life.

Perhaps you'd like to post in to some of the threads that you object to?
Seriously - we positively welcome all shades of opinion. As half of our members think the Mods are a bunch of dangerous lefties, and the other half think the Mods are a bunch of Fascist control freaks, we must be doing soemthing right!
If you do find something that exceeds the bounds of decency, by all means raise it with the Mods. If you find something you disagree with, then post to the thread about it!
One thing I have found fascinating on here is that I've been exposed to the views of people who's views I'd never otherwise have never come across - from all parts of the political and social spectrum. It's very easy to get a world view that's based on your experiences and ignore everything else.
"This is my truth, tell me yours", apart from being the title of a Manic Street Preacher's album, is, IMO, a good attitude to carry with you on the Forum.
Alternatively, walk a mile in the other man's shoes....then you'll be a mile away from him and you'll have his shoes. :)

SpiderPete 07-09-2005, 20:09 Well this is an interesting thread.... I have in the past and always will voice my opinion, it might be sometimes not right for others, but thats me, lol
With so many people on here opinions are bound to be mixed anyway.
MOD: Virtually identical threads merged.
