View Full Version : Castle Market
Does anyone know what's going to happen to the Castle Market?
I've heard that it will be knocked down but after speaking to some of the market traders they haven't heard anything?
From what I know, the current idea is to either relocate the market to the Moor or to a site between the pedestrian precinct and Eyre Street.
Mr BusDriver 09-01-2004, 03:19 There was a phone-in on Radio Sheffield about 6 months ago.
Most people said that the Markets should stay where they are at present and NOT move to any other part of the City centre as this would cause unrest.
Can't remember where I read it but there was a suggestion that they will knock it down to reveal the castle ruins and the river Sheaf underneath?
I also heard that the market may be relocated to the moor?
bassman-x 09-01-2004, 16:41 the sooner castle markets are razed the better, the whole area is a dump infested with some ghastly architecture and good sized local population of undesirables.
We have a great canal basin and I think the viatl link between that and the city is the market area, I feel the market should go and use whats left of the castle ruins, then the canal and ruins can be used for educational and tourism purposes, then the surrounding area could extend the residential buildings that are going up over the road and the old court buildings could be put to good use as they are the only nice buildings there.
Getting rid of the markets would decimate that end of the city centre though, cos they're all anybody ever goes that far down town for apart from Wilkinsons.
Good point,
but a change for that area may be better in the long run, there's a few large office blocks going up around the corner, to extend it there could bring more money and jobs to the area and hopefully none will be lost with the relocation of the markets.
Found this page on the Sheffield council web site:-

I agree. I think that whole area is badly in need of a revamp.

Doubtful that you'll get your account fully-deleted.
To stop the emails, do this:
- click on 'My Control Panel' in the the left-hand menu (it's under 'Forum Contents').
- from there, click on 'Edit Options'.
- look in the 'Default Thread Subscription Mode' box, and from the drop-down menu select 'do not subscribe'.
wobblywill 03-08-2009, 15:24 Just had a stroll down to the Castle Market area, what a dump! Just looking for some fabric shops and someone suggested Castle Market, OMG. Someone told me they had got rid of the drunks and druggies hanging outside the main entrance. You could have fooled me. I was very nervous, looking around me all the time, a bit intimidated. Horrible people spitting, a security guard on shop door at chemist! What's all that about? Mind you thinking about it, i'm not surprised. It will probably be another good few years before I venture down there again.
personally I think Sheffield missed a trick when planning to relocate the markets- there's the old post office building bang next to the bus station that couldve made a great market area - still in the general vicinity and central. Giving a bit of character and sifting out the tat would really help to revive the markets - other towns and cities have bustling markets, so why is ours full of tat?
Also, the old bus station next to the leadmill was supposed to be markets/ shops but still stands empty - we'd rather shift it all to moorfoot (how are visitors supposed to know where it is, if it moves miles from the stations?)and build some crappy modern glass and metal monstrosity when there are lovely old buildings lying empty
it's being knocked down and bult again as part of the sevenstones development that will replace the moor. the demolition has been delayed until 2013 because of the credit crunch!
scallyboy 03-08-2009, 16:57 the original idea was to knock them down relocate it to the moor and reveal the remains of the castle making it in to a museum and tourist attraction however lack of funds seems to have put that one on hold,i therefore propose we fence off the area from around the top of king street to the don and turn it into an urban zoo so that people from more affluent areas can bring their kids to fed its inhabitants kfc and special brew.

The new market has nothing what so ever to do with sevenstone and where have you found the date of 2013, the site where the market is going to be built has been almost fully cleared and is still going ahead although I know sevenstone itself has been put on hold.

But what will then happen that lovely pub the Norfolk Arms? Will it be relocated too?

this is true, however, if you go on to the site and look at uk and then sheffield and you will see everything on there that has been planned, everything submitted and the link to the designers or construction company so it DOES give a good insight. maybe not an authority but a damn site more accurate than some things posted on here.
saying that no one on there is complimentary about people on here as they quite rightly see that everyone on here moans about redevelopement!
theripsaw 04-08-2009, 09:10 So when will the new markets be ready?
sometime between now and never knowing the council
I used to work in the offices above them, we were told they were being knocked down at some point, We relocated but they have since got a new firm in our old offices so not sure. Sooner the better i think!
