View Full Version : Electrician and CORGI plumber, quotes needed - Chesterfield
sarahjane 06-09-2005, 19:56 Hi
I have just had a homebuyers report carried out on a house I'm buying and I need to get some written quotes for work.
1) I need an electrician to check the wiring and give a written quote for work.
2) I need a CORGI registered plumber to check the back boiler (and see if it needs updating/replacing), the water cylinder, check for lead piping and provide a written quote for anything that wants doing.
I know I'm probably hoping for a lot but I could really do with getting the quotes done free cos I'm running out of cash. Obviously if work needs doing I will pass it on to whoever does the quote.
The house is in Chesterfield.
I have also had a damp and timer specialist round to give a quote but I'm not convinced about him!!
Does anyone know one that is BWPDA regisiterd that could give a free written quotation??
Thanks everyone!
Sarah

Complete-Heat 20-06-2009, 10:07 my advice would be to get someone to quote for upgrading that back boiler. Mainly because of the fact that they are so inefficient compared to todays models.
Sure, you'll get some diehard replies about "how my back boiler is 20 years old and has never broken down" , but now is the time to get rid..
Put in a decent condensing system boiler (Vaillant, Worcester-Bosch) and upgrade the hot water cylinder to a high recovery model. Get the system powerflushed, change any old rads, add TRV's, and install a Magnaclean.
Later on, when the prices drop further, you can add solar panels and an air source heat pump.
PrincessKate 20-06-2009, 10:30 Air source is the way forward :) air to water system.
jl-heating 20-06-2009, 14:20 as above do as andy says,
upgrade the heating, back boilers are 60+ efficienct at best even with control fitted, all the heat goes up the chimmney.
put a shiny new combi in or just replace the boiler and re use the existing hot water and tanks and upgrade to a programmer and room stat for more savings.
the electrics just need a periodic test which by the way should be done every 10 years max or when ever the engineer reccomends. who ever does this will give you a cert with all the reading to prove safe instalation etc.
might be an idea not so say you are running out of cash lol... all the work needed is pretty major and fairly costly . :)
Complete-Heat 20-06-2009, 19:49 John...you old cynic you....... :o
This is the forum. I'm sure someone from here will quote for all that work for next to nowt......:D
Nows the time to upgrade. Its a buyers market out there and lots of deals to be had......but quality costs and so does a quality tradesman..

I've never heard of people charging for giving quotes? Get at least 3 quotes (good advice given to me on the forum!) and choose who you feel comfortable with once you've looked for recommendations too (search the forum, also go to the recommended tradesman thread etc).
jl-heating 20-06-2009, 20:30 its common practise in london to charge for quotes a usuall price is 50 pound and comes with general advise etc.
the quote is then removed from the final costing if chosen.
its an excellent idea and stops the customer calling endless amounts of trades and playing them off against each other.
but yes i do agree 3 quotes should give you an idea of costs.

I wasn't aware of that, you learn something every day :) thank goodness I don't live in London then!
I would certainly not recommend anyone 'calling endless amounts of trades' but surely customers should be allowed to see and know what they're paying for?
Paying for these sorts of things is expensive. We got 3 quotes when we had ours done, and I didn't try to play anyone off against each other. But it meant we could listen to what each had to say, and make up our minds who to trust with the amount of money we were about to spend. And to be honest, the fact that the 'chosen' company was slightly cheaper was a surprise, as we decided we'd opt for them regardless (unless obviously they were ridiculously expensive in comparison).
So I'm afraid I have to disagree with you regarding it being an excellent idea :D
Micky ET 21-06-2009, 09:50 I Can quote for heating and won't charge ;-)
numero uno 21-06-2009, 14:06 Dave the plumb responded to this from 2005?
I think they may have sorted it by now?

a lot of my "quotes" involve hours of testing first - if the tools come out the bill starts ...............simple.
jl-heating 21-06-2009, 19:04 hehe never looked at the date .. :(
also agree with saxondale if tools are used there is a costing,
