The exterior front door recently broke completely and the landlord, being a nightmare landlord of the worst kind, has made a bad attempt to replace it.

He bought an old pine interior door full of little gaps and loose panels, filled out the gaps, put a quick undercoat around the door, almost immediately painted the front (only) of the door with exterior paint, and hung it. This was all done within a few hours and went on until midnight!

There are quite a few gaps around the door<->frame and old hinge area, and the frame itself is old and in need of repair.

1) The door doesn't close. At all. It's not been planed correctly, and with no allowance for movement or expansion - which is probably the problem. The door is a very large imperial size door so is pretty damn heavy.

2) There is a peephole he put on there but it's completely the wrong size. It sticks out a good inch on the inside and is not secured (it just poked straight out).

3) There is no back plate to the post box, and the two fastenings are completely different from each other and stick out - it would be easy to catch oneself on them, and they look atrocious - botched job.

4) How secure is an interior pine door?

5) How weather proof is it going to be?

There is no chance the landlord will deal with any of these items except possibly getting someone cheap to do a quick planing job for (1), but surely an interior pine door cannot be used as the front-most door to a rented property due to it's construction? Exterior door construction is different, and an interior door offers no structural protection - it could be kicked through with ease.

Do the tenants have a right to have someone replace it themselves by using a professional fitter and a proper exterior door then take the money off the rent?
