View Full Version : Aren't apples bland & tasteless?
Don_Kiddick 06-09-2005, 14:36 I've just had 2 apples, one a 'pink lady' variety which was very juicy & sweet but had little flavour, and another smaller variety that was neither juicy, sweet nor had any flavour.
Both supermarket purchases.
On the rare occasion that my old apple tree fruits, the apples are delicious.
Isn't this annoying?
JonJParr 06-09-2005, 14:41 Might I suggest you try Marks and Spencer's new variety [exclusive to them and of the Royal Gala family] called "Jazz". They are wonderfully sweet and juicy with just the right amount of crunch.
I don't think you will be disappointed.
the_rudeboy 06-09-2005, 14:57 Pink Ladys from Asda are usually ok.
I also like Braeburns.
But my faves are Russets.....but they dont seem to be readily available.
Don_Kiddick 06-09-2005, 15:02 It's the 'flavour' that's missing though, sweet n juicy were the Pink Lady (from ASDA incidentally) but bland of taste.
If you are a certain age ;) you may remember Cox's Orange Pippins. The pips characteristically rattled when the apples were shaken.
You very occassionally see them nowadays but they don't 'rattle' anymore........ bloody scientists messing around again.

Its like they have nowt better to do than mess about with assorted fruits when they could be enhancing medical science and curing cancer.. priorities though eh :)
We're in the middle of Discovery season right now (it's very short as they don't keep like Cox's or those awful Golden Delicious things) and I cold eat them until I'm sick. Perfumed and juicy, and at this time of year cheap too.
If you can't find them anywhere else, go to Beanies, where the fruit and veg all smells and tastes like it should!

Get ready for the advert :
"These arn't just apples, these are Jazz apples, hand-picked by blond haired, brown-eyed virgins in a small exclusive orchard in the private garden of the Prince of Monacco, then pollished with pashmina cloths by nuns who are specially trained to gently handle fruit, before being wrapped in cotton wool for transportation back to England in a suite on the QE2"
Or is there some other reason why they are a pound per apple.

surely a russet is a russet, not an apple? or are apples, russets and pears all from the same genus?

Russets are just a variety of apple (http://www.tree-mendus.com/articles/russet_apples.html) aren't they? Just as Golden Delicious (strange name for something so yuck) are another variety.

There was something about this on Countryfile a while ago. Supermarkets are turning their noses up at fruit which doesn't look perfect. The result is we have good looking but mainly tasteless fruit.
pete_fcs 06-09-2005, 19:15 don, i think all apples are rubbish.
it's easier and cheaper to get yer fruit fix from buying one litre economy cartons of reconstituted fruit juice:|

Makes ya apple pie a bit stodgy though. :D
It's not just apples - bananas  pears and grapes seem to lack flavour too, these days.
I remember when fruit used to taste like fruit
