spyro2000 06-09-2005, 10:46 :help:
Whenever I try to go the command line by pressing START - RUN - and typing in either CMD or COMMAND I get this error message
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/spyro2000/1.jpg
I have no idea what it means any ideas?
I have also noticed that this same exact message appears whenever I try to play certain games, partcularly all games ive downloaded from http://www.the-underdogs.org for some reason. No games I download from there will work
EDIT: I have Windows XP
When you run a 16-bit program on Windows 2000, the program runs in the Microsoft Windows NT Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM). The NTVDM is a multithreaded process that simulates a 16-bit Windows environment where 16-bit Windows-based programs can be run as separate threads. The NTVDM uses the TMP system variable to find a location to run the program. Typically, the TMP system variable is set to C:\WINNT\Temp. This folder uses the 8.3 file-naming format when new files are created, instead of using long file names.
Info from M$ (Win 2K) (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;889506)
More from M$ (XP) (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767&Product=winxp)
And from Google, we have this little lot (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications).
alchresearch 06-09-2005, 12:18 Seen this before. It's when your .NT files in Windows have been corrupted.
I'll dig out the link to restore them.
Here you go:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767&Product=winxp
This is also useful for getting more free DOS memory when running old games:

You should also download VDMS from Sourceforge.net

Any chance of a link to it? Cheers.
Command and cmd do different things. If you are just trying to run ping, ipconfig etc then you should use cmd.
If you are getting that message for cmd something is wrong as I don't think it should be running in 16bit mode at all.

Running ping and ipconfig etc has always worked for me before using command.
I cant get into the CMD, the box comes up but nothing happens, and I cant type anything.
COMMAND works, but with the problems as above.
Well I guess there's no reason not to run ipconfig etc under command, the difference is that cmd is the winxp command line prompt whereas command runs the dos emulator environment.
What steps did you follow from the posts above?

Has somebody played with the security settings?
Have you tried a "System Restore"?
Or extracting the original command.exe & cmd.exe from the XP Install disk (may - or may not - work).
Please note.... I am not an XP expert/lover or user, so all advice given by me istaken @ your own risk:D
spyro2000 06-09-2005, 14:06 hehe, cheers folks, dont worry about it. I cant be bothered to fix it, its not like I need to ping anything anyway :loopy:

One final thing to try, is this registry hack (from M$) at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314452.
May help if you get time to have another attempt;).

Yeah, 'command' is for gettting into the DoS environment, whilst cmd is for 2k and XP.
Although the ping, ipconfig/all, tracert etc can be done in either. People that have used computers since the invention of the wheel I find, seem to use 'command' and newer people use 'cmd'... Interestingly, we were taught at college 'command' but we did learn on old 98 machines, so I'd expect that...
