sorry, not treeton mate,i worked at orgrieve, BUT my first job for the ncb was to put up the sign at treeton training school in, i think 1967,it was at the top of the lane that overlooked treeton dyke.

Didnt work at Treeton but worked at Fence Workshops for 14-years on reception and the cost office. LEft 2 years after strike.

my dad was a winder at treeton and brookhouse

never really knew the winders as i worked underground & for the last few yrs of its life treeton was a drift mine & shafts were rarely used by the regular workforce , only maintenance men & a few officials etc

My other half and his Dad both worked at Treeton. They are called Thomson. My B/f would have been there round about the time you were I think

D id not work at treeton but was at orgreave from 72 til when it shut in the 80s did my training at treeton and dinnington tec when orgreave put the lid on some of them went to work at treeton some of the names i can remember are as follows jonny mac over man ray raggy nose needham pete havenhand over man big stanly ripper my minds gone blank it was a long time ago wizzard my nic name was duko or duke hope this helps great bunch of lads never worked with a better bunch worked hard and played hard :D in those days be nice to have good nite out and catch up on some off the stories what we used to get up to and some of the strokes we pulled on oneanother :thumbsup:

ron windle union man he was from treeton he finished up being a councilor i think jonny mac bought his own quarry in derbyshire the last i heard what a lad he was lol big powerfull man but as soft as a brush down pit i remeber him crawling down coal face and he had a black out and a lump of rock fell on his head took six men to get him off the face then he was back at work the next day lol

I worked at Treeton from '76 to '88. John Tyas.

I worked at Treeton on the screens in July 1952 while waiting for the NCB Training at Treeton in August 1952.
I worked as a haulage hand under Reuben Pyatt, the Deputy was Jackson.
I remember Brian Marvin who painted his miners helmet pink. Alfie who was mortally afraid of pit moggies.
I left after I was forced to attend an inquisition at the pit on a Saturday unpaid and lost my Saturday shift.
They found the guy who had hammered a nail into an electric cable near the face end of the level, I know he was sacked and taken to court in Rotherham.
In those days I was not even offered the tram fare to attend or given any apology.
I the went to Kiveton Park.

My mate Glynn Rockley lived in Treeton and used to work down Treeton. He broke 3 vertebrae in his back at Thurcroft and was put on light duties in the office at Treeton bored out of his mind just before it closed. He's now living in Langworth in Lincs, driving a tarmac machine last I heard. I was at British Steel at the time and put a welding rod through the fridge trying to defrost it so had to find another and Glynn said I could have theirs from the canteen as it was going down the shaft anyway when it closed. It was painted blue. I don't know how old that fridge was but I was made redundant last July and the old Treeton pit canteen fridge was still working in the cooling beds office at Aldwarke Finishing Banks the day I left, 20 years after I cadged it. Who says fridges only last 6 years.

I worked at Treeton for a while they used to call me "The Sheffield Puff" because I had what they considered a posh accent coming from Gleadless Valley :)

sad news top lad, i was at school with webby, we started down't pit together [treeton] 1 of my first jobs underground was doing the stone dust barriers,webby & i were on our own & totally bored 1 shift & decided to have a skive so we sat down & got the tin of mac crystals out, webby turned his cap lamp off & i put mine on dim,we'd been sat there skivin' off for about 10 minutes when we both looked up & saw some one watching us so we both jumped up & tried to look like we were'nt skiving & in th time it took to turn our lamps on full beam & see who it was, there was no one there! we both agreed that who ever it was was wearing 1 of the old leather helmets had a garforth lamp & no self rescuer, when our boss came & found us [i think it was eric stuart, with jim murray in tow] we were quite shaken up & told him what had happened. he reckoned we'd seen the ghost of barnsley bill. word soon spread & for months after in & out of work we were asked if we'd seen barnsley bill lately, consequently after all the ribbing we got webby & myself agreed over a few pints in the plough in catcliffe that even if we saw aliens doing the conga down't pit we'd never tell a soul,lol.

can't remember mate it was 40 years ago, we were convinced it was a ghost, we were 16 years old & had it drilled into us the worst thing we could do down the pit [short of lighting up et'c] was not to have our self rescuers on [fineable/sackable offence] & the fact was this guy had'nt got 1 on [as you know you could spot the big shiny silver & probably useless cumbersome things a mile off] plus no cap lamp & an oil lamp & old fashioned helmet had us convinced. if it was a joke it was a good 1 & no 1 ever let on!

Hi i worked from 1970 to 1994 had the best time of my working life
what great bunch of lads . Worked on haulage then did my coal face training
at silverwood . worked on s04 tailgate rip so6 TG rip so2 main shearer
so7 double ended shearer so4 main shearer in the swollow wood seam
.Then went into the wathwood inset onto 21s face that was like going
back in time after that i went to be a deputy. Know all the lads named its just putting faces to them its bean a long time now like to meet with some of lads and have drink like we used to do friday nights off afters what memorys ps i think Bustedsofa is Bob Lloyde.

I was in Ireland once with Glyn Buxton Rockley and in a bar called The Cosy Bar in Belturbet, we overheard a voice he knew from the pit. It was a kid who had only one arm, apparently he'd taken a short cut down the drift or something and had an accident, anyway from what I heard, he'd travelled to Ireland on a motorbike! He was as mad as hatter but I found it, and still do find it hard to believe he drove a motorbike with one arm missing.

hi joto,arthur was a proper nice bloke, i remember being on 10s in the early 70s & we got talking about music & he got us all singing a raucous rendition of chuck berrys my ding a ling! which the colliery manager [who was'nt noted for his sense of humour] & visitors did'nt seem to like much-lol.

Your talking about Sid Kidd I can assure you he would/could have been on a bike as he's got a Prosthetic Arm and he loved nothing better than to get in a fight so he could smack someone in the face with it

Les Middleton worked up till recently for BT and has retired ,my mates dad used to work at Treeton Edwin and Shaun Bell.

hi, busted sofa, is the Martin Webster you mentioned, Webby from catcliffe? looking at the date it would have made him 43 when he passed away.

he's my brother in law died of lung cancer in 1998.

sad news top lad, i was at school with webby, we started down't pit together [treeton] 1 of my first jobs underground was doing the stone dust barriers,webby & i were on our own & totally bored 1 shift & decided to have a skive so we sat down & got the tin of mac crystals out, webby turned his cap lamp off & i put mine on dim,we'd been sat there skivin' off for about 10 minutes when we both looked up & saw some one watching us so we both jumped up & tried to look like we were'nt skiving & in th time it took to turn our lamps on full beam & see who it was, there was no one there! we both agreed that who ever it was was wearing 1 of the old leather helmets had a garforth lamp & no self rescuer, when our boss came & found us [i think it was eric stuart, with jim murray in tow] we were quite shaken up & told him what had happened. he reckoned we'd seen the ghost of barnsley bill. word soon spread & for months after in & out of work we were asked if we'd seen barnsley bill lately, consequently after all the ribbing we got webby & myself agreed over a few pints in the plough in catcliffe that even if we saw aliens doing the conga down't pit we'd never tell a soul,lol.

he told me about this...... i just said too many pint's in lion before after's lol
