I know certain piercings can be particularly prone to infection. Is the tragus one of them?

And does it hurt?.....will i need my mum to hold my hand?

Mu daughter had hers pierced a couple of years ago at a place in Rotherham, erm.... can't remember its name, does tattoo's as well, on a corner near a multi storey car park??? anyway, she had no problems at all other than it being sore at first obviously. No infection or anything.

Oh if that's what it is, have it done! I've had mine done for a couple of years now and it didn't get infected, and it didn't hurt a bit. The piercer should tell you how to care for it until it settles down. Just try not to forget it's there when you answer the phone... that smarts a bit.

There's also fidgeting in your sleep and knocking it to contend with. Oh, and finding your earphones only fit in one ear.

Nah, seriously, have it done. It gives you summat to twiddle when you get bored! ;)

It doesnt hurt, but it does make a funny crunching noise as the needle goes through. And it wont get infected, provided you keep it clean and dont fiddle with it till its healed.

BoroughGal
05-09-2005, 16:59
I had it done, been absolutely fine. I thought it did hurt a little bit, especially as it took two pushes to get the needle through.... but it wasn't horrifying or anything.

Q. Why do you have your hair cut the way you do?
A. To please yourself i imagine.

People do things because they want to, you dont necessarily have to have a specific reason. Be it a piercing, a tattoo, a haircut, a new dress.....whatever.

I have my hair cut (although actually I don't have it cut, I do it myself) because otherwise it continues to grow and gets in the way... i.e. I consider that I have a good reason for doing so.

I have a reason for doing most things, I doubt that I'm unusual in that...

So are you telling me that there is no reason behind the actions you list above? Forgive me if I doubt you, my friend! :)

I am scared of all catriledge piercings. I've had three, and they all hurt like hell, and didn't heal right. The most recent one was in my ear for 2 and a half years, and never healed. I eventually gave up, and removed them all. I'd never get one again.

Just to let you know that there are possible negative experiences to be had, as well as positives.

All i'm saying is......the reason I do certain things is because I WANT TO or I CHOOSE TO and because it pleases me by doing that particular thing. Simple as that.

Why do people climb mountains? Or swim the channel? Or do anything thats not part of everyone elses everyday life? Because they want to, thats why.

Im guessing you had them done with a piercing gun, or using innapropriate jewellry. Ive never had trouble with cart piercings, because all the ones Ive had have been needle pierced, and used a properly sized ring or bar to heal them.

My question earlier... "So why did you have it pierced? ... I'm curious..."

Was a serious one, not a prelude to snide comments... I'm genuinely interested in the reason as to why some choose to have piercings, tattoos, etc., as it's something that I've never been able to fully understand.

'Because I like it', 'To please myself' and 'Because I want to', unfortunately leaves me no wiser as to the reasoning behind it...

But... To each their own, mine not to reason why, it seems... :(

I'm not being snidey with you. I don't really know what else to say to you other than I liked it and I wanted it doing - it's not like it's for medical reasons - it's purely cosmetic? :)

The tragus is the little flap of skin in the middle of your ear (but, like, kinda attached to your head, if you get me).

Ok, Fair enough, I wasn't being critical, just curious...

Nor did I view your reply as snide, when I said that my question wasn't a prelude to snide comments, I meant that it wasn't a means of enabling me to introduce snide comments to the discussion!

As I said before... To each, their own...

Thank you for trying to explain... :)

My daughter had hers done a couple of years ago, & i have got to say i think it looks great.

She didn;t have any problems with it healing up either. just did what it told her on the aftercare leaflet she was given.

By the way, this part of the ear IS NOT supposed to be done by a gun anymore, but by needle. It was found that the gun was not suitable for this part of the ear as it could totally smash the cartiledge in it. Health & Saftey now recommend this part of the ear to be done by needle only.

Go for it., it will look great.

BoroughGal
07-09-2005, 02:32
Mine was done with a needle. I think the use of the gun produces the ball of flesh under the skin, because instead of punching a piece of skin out, the gun just pushes the skin outwards.

I never had any problems with mine, by the way.

I wasnt being snidey either and like BoroughGal I'm not sure how i can explain it. I like the look of tattoos and, strangely enough, i like the 'pain' of being tattooed. I fancy having a piercing cos i like the look of it.....it really is as simple as that.
Why does there have to be a specific reason behind it?
Its like anything that is purely cosmetic, you do it because you like it.

No, I know you weren't being snidey, as I said earlier, I was trying to explain that my interest was genuine and not an excuse for me to make snide remarks. :)

Cosmetic enhancement is to my way of thinking, make-up, a new dress (although probably not in your case! :)), a healthy-looking tan, a sharp suit, well-manicured nails, etc. etc. ... Not a permanent or in the case of piercings, semi-permanent, mutilation (emotive term but I think it adequately describes it) of the body itself. This is the part that I totally fail to see the attraction of.

I note that you do admit to enjoying the 'pain' of tattooing, that's interesting... In my case, having been subjected to the not so pleasurable pain of many repeated injections with a very large-diameter needle in my thigh (injecting into a muscle hurts!) along with having several internal 'bits' (nothing drastic, just the 'usual') removed as a child, I run a mile from needles of any variety now! :)

Can I ask a little more of you, do any of the following have any bearing at all on your decision to have piercings/tattoos, even very slightly?

a) It makes me look 'hard'.
b) It enables me to 'belong' to the crowd I associate with.
c) I regard it as an expression of my individuality.
d) I enjoy the reaction it gets.
e) It's a sign of rebellion.

I apologise in advance for asking, why you do it is your business, not mine, but it's something that I really have never understood... And probably never will, come to that!

I don't think i'm alone in getting a buzz out of the tattooing pain. The pain thing is something you can't understand unless you have actualy come under the needle. I had my first one about 20 yrs ago and to be honest i didn't enjoy it one bit. Its one of those things that grows on you.
And for the record I hate medical needles too!! :gag:

In answer to your question about my decision to be tattooed and/or pierced.
a) No. If you knew me you'd know i had no interest in looking 'hard'
b) Very few of my mates are tattooed or pierced, so thats a No too.
c) Yes in a way, although i know it is 'common' now. The two tattoos that i regularly have on show are unique to me. One i designed from scratch (pardon the pun) so i know nobody else has that and the other is a combination of a few things, so its highly unlikely that anyone else has that either.
d) To be honest there are so many people out there with far more tattoos than me, that my few are certainly not going to attract any reaction.....except off my mum!!! Having said that i do like the attention my own design seems to attract.
e) Think i'm a bit too old to be concerned about being a rebel.

I know in the long term I might live to regret it but my belief is that i'd rather regret something that i have done rather than regret something that i didn't do. This isn't a dress rehearsal so i'm going to go for it and do what i want NOW.

We are all different and the world would be a boring place if that wasn't the case. So lets just do what we want and enjoy it.....so long as it doesn't have a detrimental effect on anyone else.

a) No. Definately not
b) No again.
c) Kind of, although again, it is quite common
d) Kind of
e) Yeah, I guess so, to a degree.

I'm not into the pain aspect personally.

Just to answer your points about what you class as being cosmetic, I agree with all those things too, but I guess it wouldn't do for us to all be the same. We all must have varying degrees of what we find attractive in ourselves and others.
:) :)

No, I didn't. All needle-pierced (same as my other 12 piercings). Proper sized rings, which I changed to bars after a year or so, in an attempt to help them, heal better.

BoroughGal and the_rudeboy... Thank you both for taking the time to answer my rather impertinent questions! :)

I think I understand a little better the reasoning behind it all now.

As you say "We are all different and the world would be a boring place if that wasn't the case..." That's very true and I hope you understand that I wasn't criticising your choices, I was just puzzling over them...

the tragus is that bit in your ear connected to your face isnt it? (not very good explained lol) if it is, i have that done, it doesnt hurt at all (unlike all my other pericings) and i suppose its like all peircings, everyone is different, some popel might be prone to infection and some people may not have any trouble at all! its a bit costly though, cost me £25!! lol

How old is the piercing and what materials were used, ie PTFE, Ti barbell or surface bar? And what are you cleaning it with?
