View Full Version : Musical act that's changed your opinion about a genre?
noseyrosie 05-09-2005, 01:24 Has this ever happened to you? Despised, not given the time of day to, a certain type of music, and then heard a song or a band and gone 'wow, I have to admit that's pretty good!'?
For me it has to be Kanye West's singles from his newest album and hip hop as a genre respesctively. 'Diamonds from Sierra Leone' was a fantasticly worked song, used samples to great effect, was haunting, catchy, brilliantly produced (Kanye's pretty talented at tinkling the old ivories too according to the video), and tackles a subject that's supremely relevant to his 'bling' obsessed peers.
Anyone else?
spyro2000 05-09-2005, 01:30 Yep, anyone who knows me knows im into stuff like Hip Hop, Speed Garage, Ragga, Garage, etc (all the stuff that most of u lot dont like lol), but I heard some Green Day tunes a while back that I really liked, especially Basket Case, and I dont even like that genre
BrainThrust 05-09-2005, 01:33 Oh i get this all the time!
For me it was Orbital, I was a ska-punk kid and then my sis made me hear 'In Sides' and suddenly whole new vistas of msic gained some appeal to me. Asian Dub Foundation were also the same as I still consider 'facts and fictions' to be one of the best albums in my collection.
I've already mentioned M.I.A. in the mercury music prize thread and I suppose the one before that was Gorillaz, I have a real problem with pop music but can't help but find it catchy, interesting and full of talent.

I'd also nominate Green Day. I've never been a big fan of modern punk music, but Green Day are great to watch live and Billie Joe Armstrong has to be one of the best showmen around right now.
Lamb for trip hop
Orbital/Underworld for dance
Logical Progression for drum and bass
Grieg for Classical

In Sides had the same effect on me too, that and the speech at the start of SATAN, which made me chuckle immensely
DanSumption 07-09-2005, 12:34 I used to "use" techno music, i.e. dance to it at raves, but would never play it at home, Photek changed that for me.
I was never very into Hip-Hop/Rap until I heard Tone Loc.
And I forced myself to listen to Last Exit's album, The Noise of Trouble, 20 times, because it featured Bill Laswell who is one of my favourite bass players. I was wondering what the hell all this meaningless noise was, when on the 20th play it all clicked and I've loved free-improv/thrash jazz type stuff ever since.
Agent Gypo 07-09-2005, 14:01 I was a big metal fan and hated dance music until I heard Aphex Twin's Come To Daddy and Atari Teenage Riot's 60 Second Wipeout. I used to think metal was extreme and hard, but there's absolutely nothing (not even early Slayer and Konkhra) that can top this lot.
Also despised all garage until I heard The Streets. Still despise most other garage acts though.
