Has anybody joined the camping and caravanning club recently?
We joined two years ago. Having a tent we seem to be rated as second class against caravans and given all the worst pitches. Is it just me, are does anyone else feel the same?

Er did you actually read the thread topic :suspect:

What does it matter what tent it is.

The topic was about whether Caravans are put first in regards to pitches.

I am afraid we haven't joined the club, I find it just as cheap to just find anywhere in the evening for touring.

I'm not sure it's the Club, but camp sites in general. We use a folding camper (caravan size, but canvas upper half - sort of tent and caravan). Key difference to a tent is it needs a stable and level base and electric hook up. As such, sites tend to build these pitches with a hard base - eg gravel and then pretty them up with flower beds etc.

Tents on the other hand come in so many shapes and sizes, and generally don't need the electric hook up, so camp sites can just cram them all into large fields in a fairly haphazard fashion.

If you ask for a tent pitch with an electric hook up you'll probably get a good site - although will have to pay a couple of quid a night for the electric even if you don't use it - but might be worth the money?

Hi
as the sites can charge more for a fully serviced hard standing then it makes good business sense for them to fill the site with these and sqeeze the less profitable unserviced grass pitches somewhere at the back away from the facilities. If you're willing to pay the extra for a serviced pitch you may find yourself trying to pitch on gravel or tarmac.
Good luck with the camping, we're off to Barmouth ( Hendre Mynach )next week with the Pennine Fiesta, good pitches there for tents.
regards

Caravanners are snobby towards campers they call them tent-types.

Saying that you also get campers getting snobby towards other campers i.e the Kyham and Outwell owners.

Not all caravaners are snobs.Only the ones with the 4x4.s,But who cares. Most of the caravaners in the camping and caravaing club are ok.Not like the snobs in the caravan club, they even frown on children playing near their precious vans .Happy campin:clap:

my girlfriend's doing the Pennine Way right now with her friend, and on Friday night they were on a site, happily pitched when two older groups pitched massive tents on either side of them.
Anyway, later that night she hears one of them say 'Oh yes, this site would be lovely, especially if that small tent wasn't in the way', and later that night, when i turned up in the support car bringing fresh clothes/food etc, one of the big tent types turned to one of the others and said 'Would you believe it?' as i'd parked my car blocking the little highway they'd trodden in between their two tents.
I'm sorry, but my gf and her mate are walking 280 miles, staying in a small two man tent and carrying all their own gear, as opposed to bowling up in a car unpacking half of CCC then moaning about everything around them.
Some people.

Support car? Pennine Way? Huh?????? Things have changed - the PW is a challenge - take what you need, or buy it on the way.

Nothing to do with the comments re the campers which I totally agree were out of order, but, just another example of life becoming sooooo easy. Was this a post "A" level challenge?

There is a site I go to in Wales and the level of one-upmanship is getting worse.

It started with flash cars, which turned into soft tops, which then turned into hardtop cabriolets.

Then it was the towing vehicle for your boat. Suddenly a towbar on your car was no good, if you were anyone you had to have a tractor, quad or dedicated 4x4.

It's now got to the stage where a couple of people are actually bringing and launching Microlights.

Give me a night's camping in my little backpacking tent on the moors or a fiver to pitch at Barton on Humber or Edale anyday.

hmmm....know what you mean. The C&CC sites do tend to be more expensive, but the facilities are usually ok.
We (me, partner and 3 ickle kids) have camped in several different sites over the last year, some being expensive with crap facilities, others being cheap with good facilities (the water leisure park at skeggy is  )
usually find the C&CC sites are bookable....and as they get booked up over busy times, its easier to go to non club sites and just hope for a pitch. get there really early and you are

I have to add something here. We are in the caravan club but own a tent (a khyam too):) We also used to own a 4x4 BUT we are not snobs in any way and have never really had a problem with others, infact earlier this year we we on a Cl site with the tent and we had to set up in awful weather, the nice couple in their nice caravan brought us some hot drinks over. I think the problem with the caravan club is that the sites are used by alot of older people some of which are not too keen on kids running around. Going back to the khyam:) we purchased it because it is so easy to erect not to show off, although we do have the matching windbreak:hihi:. No to be honest we bought the tent 2nd hand and the windbreak came with it.

Sorry OK not all 4x4 are snobs. Do appologise:smile: Also the missis and me are middle aged caravaners and we love to see and hear the kids playing and enjoying themselves its great:) The only problem we find is from the grown ups,who cant communicate without shouting ,shouting at the kids when they are only playing.Radios blasting..and then shouting at the kids to be quiet :loopy: mind you I havnt come accross this problem on any of the club sites. You find out club members are more considerate..Happy campin:thumbsup:
