Club Future Proposals

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

After the AGM, we would still appreciate you views about future club proposals;

main points were around setting up a second club night on Weds or Thurs

- one suggestion is to make the second night more competitive with more regular coaching, open to all that wish.

- or just run both as a social/informal..

- how often we would like a coach at these nights.

please discuss on here/ email us your views as we are in the process of making plans.

thanks, your commmitee

:)

Yeah come on guys - without your opinion/thoughts/feelings positive, negative or somewhere in between it's tough to make the decisions......

Go on then - I'll set out some points of view! This is a bit of a splurge of ideas though!

I'm not totally sure an extra club night is needed, it wasn't long ago that people were complaining that there weren't enough people going on a Tuesday so a few busy weeks shouldn't be taken out of context.

Having an additional night that is different, with coaching, perhaps a better standard for the league players, is certainly a good idea in principle, the problem is if it splits the club in two.

A social night and a competitive night might work (perhaps have tournaments on the competitive night?) but we'd have to be careful that it doesn't become a two-tier club.

Also, will enough people go to both nights?

How about alternating so a coach comes to the Tuesday night one week, the Wednesday the next?

Or how about 4 courts on a tuesday put aside for 'tournament' play. People who have signed up (as normal, and requested tournament) will be allocated into pairs and play a league/cup over the 4 courts. The rest of the hall is social as per normal.

I think I like the idea of charging more for people who don't sign up beforehand, so long as it stays at only £1. Perhaps there could be an annual £10 'membership' or something that would also give a discount? Or you have to 'become a member' in order to go to the 2nd night?

Or incentives for regular attendance? (Free T-shirt if you attend 26 weeks in a year or something)

I'm sure all these idea can be picked apart, but they're just suggestions to be thrown out there :)

I would like to echo something Steve mentioned:

I too have a concern a two-evening format in which one evening is more competitive (= for better players?) will change the sociable atmosphere of the club so that a 'club-within-a-club' (=two-tier club) mentality develops. There are probably ten or fifteen clubs in Sheffield that are all about playing competitive badminton. I have a sneaking suspicion that many of them started out as primarily sociable and then evolved to become successively more competitive. Anybody have any thoughts/reassurance regarding this?

Cheers,

Rob.

Hmmm Rob,

there might be a different way of going about this. Somewhat as Steve has suggested perhaps we could weave an occasional tournament into the club nights. We could combine this with all club nights being open to all.

Cheers,

Rob.

Well ok Rob,

I see where you're going with this. Now Steve suggested we could allocate a few courts for a tournament but that is not really necessary. It could be much less formal than that, ie with no intervention from the club.

To have a tournament, you just need a number of pairs to get together and agree they are going to have a tournament. If they are organized, and this does not mean much more than having a piece of paper to record scores, then they can use their court time to play the games they need for the tournament. More specifically, they can just fit into the 'go on court, play a game, yield the court' rotation.

To organize a tournament you just need a thread on the forum to gather the pairs and a sheet of paper to record the scores. I reckon in an evening you could manage a six pair all-play-all tournament and still have time left over to do a bit of socialising.

Cheers,

Rob.

Ok Rob,

Now you're sounding a bit more enthusiastic. Can I put you down on the list for the first tournament?

Cheers,

Rob

No, I am a social player, really. Just trying to be helpful.

I am just trying to generate a bit of discussion although sometimes it can feel as if I am talking to myself.

So what do people think about mini-tournaments woven into ordinary club nights on an occasional basis. Good idea or rude and anti-social?

Cheers,

Rob.
