View Full Version : Looking for a proper Funk Night
Does anyone know if there is a good funk and motown night in Sheffield? One that plays the old original stuff from Parliament, Maceo Parker, Sly and the Family Stone, etc. - no cheese or disco? You know, a place that *might* play Stevie Wonder, but only ever Superstition, Higher Ground or Living for the City. Does anyone out there know what I'm on about?! ;o)
Bully_Beef 05-09-2005, 07:59 Yes mate! I know exactly what you mean. The true heavy funk is exactly what I love, especially stuff like The Meters, Booker T, Sly, Parliament, Weldon Irvine etc. The closest I've found is Cirque Du Funk on Thursdays at The Forum, but they tend to throw in a fair bit of disco and that (which I like too, but not everyone's bag)
I believe there's some funk nights going on at The Earl these days too.... Sure the Earl's forummers will enlighten you ;)
I tried to run a proper deep funk night at Orchis a couple of years back, but I rather cocked it up and lost loads of money

It's known as 'Wall of Balls', let me know if you want details of forthcoming events anyone.
For Motown, there's Soul Food at the Earl.
Next one is this Friday.

What else is included in soul food night at the Earl besides Motown? As For pure funk I believe Sheffield struggles to put much on of a soul nature as it unfortunately has always been very much a rock city-- no prizes for guessing where my true love lies.
You can expect to hear the finest in Northern Soul, Tamla, Stax, Atlantic and early disco.
And your hosts for the evening are The Chief, Little Anthony, Ghandi and Marshall Stacks.
Free entry before 10.30 and £2 afterwards.
Find me to say hello if you make it down.
S
If you ever happen to make it to Planet Zogg (which is trance-techno night) - I normally play a fair bit of early 70s funk & afrobeat in the second room. I had talked vaguely with a few folk of doing proper funk night - but nothing ever really came of it...

Hal_Impaler 05-09-2005, 20:13 A name worth looking out for is Wall of Balls.
We're residents at Future Funk. Essentially it's a night of two halves. Tends to go all beatsy in the latter half but earlier on we play good solid funk.
Next one is at Bar Matrix this friday (9th Sept) 7.30 til 2ish. Bout £2 in on the door.
And, yes. Flashlight is in our set.
See you there?

Bully_Beef 05-09-2005, 20:43 Well, what self respecting DJ would leave the house without Flashlight in his Box? :D
Plan B (mentioned above) is a good night to look out for....

Should be a top night, any other forumers fancy it ?
Wow, thanks everyone for all the hints! As soon as my girl gets back from Crete, we'll be checking them out :hihi:
But whoa, Wall of Balls clashes with Soul Food this Friday night... what to do?
Well, the man with the Flashlight has it! You got the funk!
Bully_Beef, what went wrong with your night at the Orchis, if you don't mind me asking?
welchiewelch 07-09-2005, 12:29 Funk's a funny one...i grew up and was well into the acid jazz scene a few years back and a lot of the funk heavies were rinsed so heavily in the clubs week in week out (and then badly imitated by some of the bands) so i feel like i never need to hear em again. Can't think of the last time i wanted to play my james brown albums....
However this ere fred has got me all funked up so am goin to stick on O'jays "For the love of money" , Kool and the gang "funky stuff" and "Rock creek park" by blackbyrds and see where it takes me...
You funky ****ers
superchrome 07-09-2005, 17:55 i went to the showroom bar on patternoster row a few fridays ago and they were playing some propper juicy funk and breaks,it nearly killed me,dont know whether its a monthly thing or weekyl?but it was funktified..i'm also looking for a slot on a funk night, also if any funkatiers fancy meetin up in the comming weeks to try any of these nights,..i'm down with that.
ps..is pulp funktion still on at the forum?
Annoni_mouse 07-09-2005, 18:19 Seems theres quite an interest in the funk scene on ere:thumbsup: Maybe time for the first forum Mothership meet:P

Don't mind at all mate....
It was a Thursday night (which is always going to be hard to fill), and due to the management being hard to pin down I ended up starting it in the middle of May: The first two weeks were pretty promising, but then all the studes started their exams and no-one came down for three weeks, during which time I lost all my money keeping the club open. Bleaaahh! :gag:
I think my main mistake was starting out with too little cash (and obviously the wrong time of year!).
Anyway, glad to see there are so many headz on here... I would definitely be up for a funkateers meet sometime!
Superchrome - it's called Crique Du Funk now, but it's pretty similar, only there's a bit more disco & 80s stuff thrown in.
superchrome 07-09-2005, 18:41 sorry to hear about your night bully beef,i know of some other people who've done the same thing at the same place and it didnt really last very long but this was a few years ago now,i think its the orcis its a funny old place....its like some sort of bermuda triangle place, people seem to dissapear and and get took to some sort of false afro wearing west st bar to meet elvis....oops gota get home>>>>>

Unlucky Bully_Beef, really sorry you lost out. I guess you've got to hit term-time in this town :(
Welchie, I absolutely love acid jazz too (probably 'cos I am quite grown up...) but sometimes, not too infrequently, you still need to burn up the dancefloor!
Re: Mothership meet - that sounds like a crack to me!

Yeah! Let's get on it...
Hal_Impaler 07-09-2005, 20:24 Good to see a bit of support here. Thanks, guys.
We're thinking about starting our own night, concentrating mainly on the funkier side of things. The kind of stuff that oily teenagers want to have sex to.
If that sounds like your thing, keep an eye out. I'll post something as soon as we get something concrete together...

I'm sure its a top night - but cannot imagine there being much Sly or Parliament being played - this was thread about funk, not funky techno or funky house- unless all the Djs have taken a sudden change in direction...? I would very impressed if they had!

I can't make it tonight either, as a) I've got a streaming cold and b) I'd want to take my girl out and she doesn't get back from her hols till next week. (Yeah, I know... girlfriend in Crete with her mates and I'm at home with the flu - how did that happen?! Dammit!)
But when's the next one? And has anyone been to future funk before? And why is it called future funk if it plays Sly and P-funk, etc.?
Ooh, questions, questions :suspect:
mr.blaze 09-09-2005, 16:12 If you want to see Sheffield best funk band check out Ninio!
