I got a Canon MP360, - chose it on a price comparison of replacement cartridges. It's a bit noisy and slow but very cheap to run. Scanner is really quite good.

In a similar boat: looking for a multi-function laser printer; print, copy, scan and laser; any suggestions?

A decent colour laser copier/scanner/printer isn't cheap. Much cheaper to buy something like a Canon Pixma colour copier/scanner/printer and a seperate mono laser printer. You could probably pick these up for around £250ish.

I'm counting the days until I can get a new laser printer as my trusty [read - free] old LaserJet 4+ is running out of toner. Currently eyeing up the Magicolor Range from Minolta.

I'd agree about the costs of colour laser which is not a viable option for me. I am looking for monochrome laser with printer, fax, scanner and copy functions as part of an overall communications package. As I also have very limited space I can only have 1 item with a relatively small footprint.

Insight are selling a multifunction mono laser for 140 quid, and you get 30 quid of high street vouchers with it which cant be too bad [not sure if you want b+w or colour print ?]

EDIT : Just seen u want fax as well - which the above doesnt have - this one does tho :

Yeah, I noticed a fax has suddsenly appeared in the list. Not really planned this out too well then.

Why do you want fax anyway? I've not used one for years. For the occassional sending of a fax I've done it straight from the PC\laptop and for recieving faxes I use NetMessage (www.nkmessage.co.uk) which sends all my faxes to email.

No mention of brother? they do some nice multifunction machines (including built in fax).
Also be carefull if purchasing epson machines as they have just won a court battle preventing 3rd parties from making their cartridges so it may be epson genuine cartridges only soon. Having said that we have a epson CX6400 mutlifunction (although the fax part is routed via modem in pc) its been a very good all round performer and can easily recommend. We also have an epson laser - VERY EXPENSIVE on the old toner front.

Best advice when buying machines that use consumables is CHECK the running cost over the year based on your typical use ?.

Cheap printers tend to be expensive to run but if you hardly use them any way that wont matter.

I've had substantial difficulty sending fax with PC software and it's also very useful to have. Thought fax was included in last post but now see it got lost somehow.

My requirements were very carefully considered. It must be an economical and reliable workhorse due to medical voice care advice to write instead of speak, speak as little as possible.

When it comes to IT purchases my past experience is ALWAYs pay more rather than less with the starting point being to find suitable kit with price as the last factor to consider BEFORE going ahead with any purchase.

I currently use Brother 1230 laser printer with 5% coverage; other than a very rare paper jam I've never had any problems and toner cartridges have lasted for 6 months or more so very cost-effective.

Hope that clarifies things.

Many thanks wendy

Just as an addendum to previous posts on this thread, I've had so many bad experiences with PCs, hard drive failures, printer probs etc, that I am very happy to print out, fax manually and have a printed fax transaction report. Although I really dont know what is reasonable I think prices have come down quite considerably during the past 6-8 months.

I picked up a Samsung SCX-4100 from PC world a few months ago which is monochrome laser, with a flatbed scanner / copier. It's a great little machine, and quite cheap to run too.

It cost something like £70!

Now this was a bit of a bargain, but if you keep your eyes open you will find something like this again from the names mentioned above.

Get an HP Officejet!

HP printers tend to be the most reliable.. do some research on the web if you don't believe me.

Plus www.morecomputers.com are cheap

Thanks for your suggestion Tony. In this case, I am looking for a reliable heavy duty workhorse because it will get used very heavily. I would therefore feel more comfortable spending a little bit more for such a laser printer with fax, scanner and copying functionality. I dont need top of the office range (in my dreams) just something that is easy to maintain, wont pack up on me or cost the earth to run. Oh and I quite forgot a fairly small footprint because I dont have a great deal of space and want to rationalise what I've got.

Ooo! Look what I just found - £81.09!

Dabs link Samsung SCX-4100 (http://www.dabs.com/uk/productview.htm?quicklinx=388g&refererid=WQ)

At that price you can throw it away after a couple of years!

You might have to find some fax software to go with it though.

Tony, that's excellent value; what do you think of that then zinger?

How does this Brother Flatbed Multi-Function www.morecomputers.co.uk/textra.asp?pn=MFC7420U1 compare with the HP you suggested? Are they as good as the Brother HL1230 laser was in it's day. I know it's totally different technology but how likely is it to pack up on me? I need a flatbed with a document feeder because of the usage.

I want to buy an all in one printer, scanner & copier(dont need fax) in the future, but dont have much room on my desk at home. What is the smallest, most compact all in one, that anyone has bought or seen. Size matters more than price to me.

We got a Hewlett Packard PSC1350 model at home, we think its great- I'm not keen on paying £20 each for the cartridges though.
Thats why we are using refill kits at the minute and its working great :)

I could get a PC like that for that price over here. To be able to say something like that with any meaning you need to quote exact specs.

There is also the thing of you get what you pay for.

Hey there poppins :)
Yep thats the official prices of an official Hewlett Packard cartridge for the PSC1350 over here- its stupid prices over here- thats why I'm buying refill kits at the moment because they are only £6 from off the internet- well worth the £6 for the same thing :)

Lurch

Not actually the same thing though is it. The cartridge is a cartridge and the refill kit is a refill kit.

Have a word with the ink refilling places like cartridge world. Sometimes its better to see how much the cartridge cost because thats where you fork out more.

Appreciate I'm raising a thread from the dead so's to speak but just to provide another recommendation for anyone else looking now.

The Canon MP750 and MP780 printers are absolutely brilliant... They're both the same except for the 780 including fax functionality.

The printer base is the same as the Pixma iP4000 which means it handles the same printhead and non-chipped cartridges (unlike newer Canon models) so consumables are a lot cheaper.

Printer specs include:
- automatic double sided printing
- booklet printing
- very good print speed at standard (faster than the Epson C86 which is fast!)

The MP750/780 units also come with a document feeder for the scanner for up to 30 docs (not able to do both sides at once) and a flatbed scanner than will adjust to take in books, etc...

Copying function is the fastest of any multi-function out there (check for reviews on google) and of course handles colour and black and white copying perfectly. Oh and it'll do things like re-size (expand, reduce) your output too.

There's 2 paper trays for you to choose from as well with a rear paper feeder for thicker papers or envelopes and a bottom tray that handles your normal printer paper.

In a nutshell, I've been playing with a few units for a while now and you couldn't prise this thing from me if you tried...

I have the MP780 and I'm really impressed with it. You've forgotton to mention that it can print on CD's too - although I haven't tried it yet.

I get my replacement cartridges from Amazon as they were the cheapest when I last looked - I use Canon cartridges not compatible ones.
