when you delete things from your startup folder, you are deleting shortcuts which point to the application, not the application itself.

to remove the application, go to start, settings, control panel, add/remove programs and uninstall them. they should be listed there.

I have windows 98.

Start / Run

Type in 'msconfig'.........press OK

On system config utility you will see a 'startup' tab - click it- then you will see everything ticked which comes on when you start the PC.

Uncheck anything you don't need every time eg I don't need Kodak etc.

As a result you will start quicker, and the things unticked will not be lost but called upon when you need.

This way will not lose any programmes, just speed up the start.

Yes, the more programs on start-up the more cycles the CPU takes - speeds everything up.

This is a handy site which lists most startup programs, and lets you know whether or not you really need them on startup:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
