View Full Version : Car parking on West street
Hi people, I will be a 1st year student next year and will be moving into Potland Tower just off West Street. I want to find a permanent parking space for my car, wonder if you guys had any ideas?
I have seen a lot of on street parking but this is only for 2 hours at a time, I am seeking a more permanent arrangment. The sort of thing where you pay a flat fee for a years parking.
Why do you need to bring your car?

No one needs a car, all one needs is food and water. It is a want/desire. I am seeking to maximise utility just like any other person would do. Any ideas people?
Thanks
I think youll have to be very lucky to find somewhere. The West Street area is notoriously short of parking spaces.
On the other hand, like nomme says, you dont really need a car if youre living on West Street - its got just about everything else.
The only thing i can think of is that i think i once saw some parking spaces for rent down near the bottom of fitzwilliam street, opposite stokes tiles - might cost you tho!

mate, i lived there last year. there really is no where to park anywhere near that is cheap. mate flatmate had to sack off the idea of bringing his car with him because there was no where to leave it.

All I'm trying to point out is, the traffic congestion/parking in Sheffield is bad enough. How do you think it would be if every student in Sheffield wanted to "maximise utility" - whatever that means? Hmmm...maybe it would mean you can't park where you want eh?

Pete1024 07-01-2004, 23:20 the uni have some spaces round the corner on broad lane.
Nomme, not wanting an argument/debate just info - chill!!
Micky, the whole point of living in town next to the University is that you just don't need a car. Try it, it can be very liberating. On a more practical note, the Uni will discourage you and there really is nowhere to put one unless you want to pay around £2k pa for an NCP season ticket (nearest NCP about 3/4 mile, so it's just far easier to walk, use the tram or busses that stop 20 yards from your front door and spend the saved cash on having fun. Cycling is ok, but there isn't anywhere to safely park on in Sheffield, there are lots of hills and your landlord will go spare if you try to take one into your room.
There is a place in town that rent out garages for around £55 a month I think.. might be a bit far out but you'll be able to get your car when you need it- and because you're on West St you won't need it much anyway.
If you can hold out until 2005 there are plans for more spaces on West Street.:D
More city centre parking (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5817)
Just down from the Wellington Pub is a car park at £50 a month.
There are quite a few places if you drive around a bit.
Nice to have a student in Sheffield that can afford a car ;)

Is that a joke? Having moved from Crookes to Walkley the one complaint that both communities have in common is that of too many students having too many cars.

Oops, missed that. :blush::blush::blush:

No probs! funny though the little smiley has now disapeared. I suppose once his job was done . . . . . . .
Park it in Pitsmoor. It'll be plenty safe there....
May I make two suggestions
This is based on the premise that you really want to come to Sheffield to study and you really want to bring your car with you.
1. Move to somewhere other than West Street, which is within the ring road, within the city centre, and as such is not designed for people to have cars at home. You could move to one of the suburbs where parking will be free, if you went to somewhere on the tram route you could leave the car at home mostly and get the tram, saving the car for going back home and other long trips.
2. Park the car away from your home in West Street. Find a pal with a house or home outside the city centre and park it up there until you need it.
To reiterate all the other posters, if you are living on West Street and studying at the University you will have no use for a car. You can get all your needs serviced as a pedestrian.
There really arent any spaces, and any you might find would be literally thousands of pounds a year, you could hire taxis for much less
This is the problem, you are asking for something that doesnt really exist, so maybe you need to think of it in a different way.
If you’re going to be on West Street you really haven't got a chance with parking, unless you’re prepared for a long walk when you eventually get parked.
Good tip form the above post, move into 1 of the suburbs then parking will be free but you will also stand a chance when applying for a parking permit at the uni, to park in the uni car parks. But living on West Street would rule you out of a chance to get a permit as you’re only a 5 minute walk away from everything you need.
