basically we were using the laptop, shut it down, took the charger out. Next time we tried to switch it on, it wouldnt come on. we know its not the charger, the green lights appear when you try to switch the laptop off but you cant hear any sound of the laptop loading up etc. The screens blank too. any ideas?

It's not a toshiba Tecra model is it?

Has it gone into hibernation mode? aka comatose mode?

Try removing the battery, then reinserting the battery and powering up.

the cable and charger lights are green when the charger is plugged in the back, they stay on. However, when you take the charger out and try switching it on the lights quickly come on and off. i haven't got the seriel number etc as my friends taken it back.

All Toshiba laptops generate an error code by flashing the lights in sequence. I also have a Toshiba diagnostic thinggy that you plug in the back that sort of tells you whats up. It does seem that if the laptop does not work but you get an error code with either of these methods, it usually needs a new system board what ever it tells you!
