View Full Version : Poll: Do you drink alcohol? Sony 03-09-2005, 20:39 Well i only drink occasionally, wanna see what everyone does! Kirsty_87 03-09-2005, 20:42 Yep, i drink alcohol ... hehe but iv not done bad this week... not had ANY! mikeyspikey 03-09-2005, 20:44 cant see the point in it really!!---although i couldnt drink if i wanted to as i have a serious illness!! DragonofAna 03-09-2005, 20:46 I can get pi**ed on the smell of coke so there is no way I am going to touch alcohol. And that last meet - I had a pint of cola and nearly did not make it home I was so tipsy ;) But look on the brightside - most people need to spend and spend to get drunk. Me - I just look at a bottle of vodka and I am there. By the way - if I drink I will not drive. No competition as I love to drive. Dragon Shiesh 03-09-2005, 20:54 I do like a drink and do so on average about 4 nights of the week! I was astonished to do this test (http://www.bupa.co.uk/health_information/asp/healthy_living/lifestyle/alcohol/alctest.asp) recently and found that I consume on average 30/36 units of alcohol most weeks....:wow: the female safe level is a mere 14! I do like a bottle of wine in the house and drink 4/5 pints of lager if I am on a night out! I am really going to try to cut down and both my Hubby and I have already discussed a pact to not drink anything at all throughout October to 'cleanse' and 'repair' our livers (apparently 28 days is all it takes for it to repair)! Can't wait for the Halloween party though...if all goes to plan that's when we can drink again! I rarely drink enough to get 'legless' though, even a whole bottle of wine just makes me warm and merry! wendygs 03-09-2005, 20:57 Voice care advise = No alcohol, tea or coffee :D DragonofAna 03-09-2005, 21:01 Sorry but there is no way anyone is going to stop me drinking lots and lots of lovely tea. Next you'll be saying it is more healthy to drink water ;) Dragon Kirsty_87 03-09-2005, 21:07 Originally posted by Dragon Sorry but there is no way anyone is going to stop me drinking lots and lots of lovely tea. Next you'll be saying it is more healthy to drink water ;) Dragon I think we met on Sunday night... i was the one in the corner drinking the coke, until 9 oclock :) DragonofAna 03-09-2005, 21:10 We did meet. I kept checking peoples online names and must have been told yours by Katy1981 about a dozen times. Take it you did not drink the offering from Katy? I was the bloke with the coke. Sat next to Ez, Stuart, Katy, The Rudeboy and Dee2Jay. Nice haircut by the way ;) Dragon Kirsty_87 03-09-2005, 21:13 Originally posted by Dragon We did meet. I did end up getting drunk in the end lol DragonofAna 03-09-2005, 21:14 And you was doing so well - resisting temptation. What's wrong with your hair? I dunno - some people are never satisfied. Remind me to wolf whistle if I see you out and about. Ooops! Sorry - wrong thread. LOL Dragon lizzmobile 03-09-2005, 21:16 Used to get hammered a lot when I lived in London, but am too busy to deal with hangovers these days. I seem to be more in tune with my body lately too, and even a couple of glasses drains the strength from me. I do appreciate fine wines however, and I don't care what anybody says I HAVE to have a snowball at Christmas :P But all that lager/beer and spirits stuff leaves me neither hot or cold. s666 03-09-2005, 21:17 well i don't go to the pub for nothing!!!lol. s666 03-09-2005, 21:17 Originally posted by Kirsty_87 lol you like me hair??! i hate it! Hows that for encouragement. I used to drink before I started driving and used to keep going until I felt sober again - anyone else had that experience? Now I just enjoy a drink at parties where I know I will not have to drive the car for a couple of days - the amount of time it takes to get that alcohol out of my system. Dragon Kirsty_87 03-09-2005, 21:24 i hate my hair, its very rare it stays straight! lol And i didnt do bad on sunday... i wasnt supposed to be drinking alcohol at all and i had been at dev cat since 7... so starting drinking alcohol at 9 isnt bad! DragonofAna 03-09-2005, 21:30 Yeah yeah! People with straight hair want wavy hair and people with wavy hair want straight hair and aint it a shame we can't all swap heads and just have done with it? Just joking. Started drinking at 9? I had left by then. Had to get the lads back for a spot of something to eat - especially the youngster. He came to the meet straight from martial arts training and that straight after work so he was pretty knackered. But - being my minder he has to stay the course so there you go. No pity on him. He reckons he knows you from somewhere anyhow Kirsty. Hmmmmm! Dragon Kirsty_87 03-09-2005, 21:33 oooo which one recons he knows me?!?! I have to admit, one of them looked slightly familiar! robbie 03-09-2005, 21:34 Originally posted by Kirsty_87 Yep, i drink alcohol ... hehe but iv not done bad this week... not had ANY! yet:D robbie 03-09-2005, 21:35 Originally posted by Kirsty_87 i hate my hair, its very rare it stays straight! lol And i didnt do bad on sunday... i wasnt supposed to be drinking alcohol at all and i had been at dev cat since 7... so starting drinking alcohol at 9 isnt bad! you did finish at 2 though:) Kirsty_87 03-09-2005, 21:35 i have a confession... im actually drinking now, only some cheap 4% stuff though... and im only one my first bottle! DragonofAna 03-09-2005, 21:36 Ez - the young one - the australian martial arts freak - and I do not mean that in a nasty way. He works at Crooks but attends his hobby clsoe to the old Jessops hospital. You do realise that the liver can only repair so much of itself and I am not sure if it can recover from too large a dose of alcohol. Have to scan the net for more info I guess. Dragon Kirsty_87 03-09-2005, 21:37 hmm whats Ez look like? i cant remember the name of the one that looked familiar to me.... Iv had a lecture already about what damage alcohol can do to you... so im not getting drunk till the end of the month :) DragonofAna 03-09-2005, 21:40 The Australian is tall, thin, boyish looking, with dark Elvis Presley type hair. Snake eyes we call him - but only when his back is turned. LOL. Had quite a conversation about you so there. He drinks Gin usually but we were all supposed to be tea total that night. Unfortunately guiness man let us down. But guiness does not affect him apparently so he thinks. Dragon medusa 03-09-2005, 21:41 Originally posted by Shiesh I am really going to try to cut down and both my Hubby and I have already discussed a pact to not drink anything at all throughout October to 'cleanse' and 'repair' our livers (apparently 28 days is all it takes for it to repair)! 28 days would be fine unless you actually have the start of liver disease or cirrhosis. These are usually permanent changes which are slowed down but not stopped by stopping drinking, and you aren't likely to know whether you have the earlier stages unless you have blood tests done. Women are more likely to have liver damage from the same level of alcohol consumption than men, and that's one of the reasons that the safe limits are lower for women. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but anything that can prevent this thread from havin gto be merged with the George Best/organ donation thread........ DragonofAna 03-09-2005, 21:44 We just ended up talking about you. Probably due to you looking familiar, and the fact you was hidden away in the corner trying your best to refuse the concoction offered to you by Katy. You know what blokes are like - a bit of banter and then move on to other topics ;) Your familiarity was rather annoying all the same. Ever shopped up crookes by any chance? DragonofAna 03-09-2005, 21:51 Aye - we will be - probably. Er!!! Now we know where the place is I may even get to leave the car at home and have a drink with y'all. Hmmmm! Maybe not have a drink. I get drunk too easily and then start talking too much. Cola is fine. Probably see you there. Dragon Kirsty_87 03-09-2005, 21:52 Im not going to another meet till the end of the month when i get paid because im soooo skint! so hopefully see you there one time! medusa 03-09-2005, 21:58 After earlier rants about the dangers of alcohol, found myself really fancying a little drinkie! Haven't had a drink in weeks, due to my painkillers (including amitriptyline and methadone) I get drunk as soon as I open the bottle, but.... Just poured myself a nice little glass of white port- yum! Cheers. I don't think I would have the start of liver disease...I have only been drinking more recently due to the lighter nights/summer...I just somehow seem to find myself sat on the patio with a bottle of wine! In the winter months I don't drink anywhere near as much...abstaining for the 28 days is what I think is required to 'cleanse' my liver of my indulgence of summer drinking etc My youngest has only just turned 3 and I never drank whilst pregnant or breastfeeding....just since doing 'that' test I have realised How much I have recently increased my drinking and have decided to do something about it!! :) ToryCynic 03-09-2005, 22:51 Yes, occasionally - either Holstein or Kronenberg 1664. Lestat 04-09-2005, 16:23 I know people who drink all the time - during work hours, at home etc.. Theres people who drink just on social occasions . . . Theres people who just have a sip of wine at Christmas. .. I think I only fall into every category here.:hihi: venger 04-09-2005, 16:46 I drink everyday usually, never go for the falling over bit. I just like feeling merry :) nick2 04-09-2005, 16:47 I drink just about every day too, usually a bottle of wine, but I'm not falling over after it. LordChaverly 04-09-2005, 16:53 Originally posted by nick2 I drink just about every day too, usually a bottle of wine, but I'm not falling over after it. Nick, I think you need to cut down a little (have half rather than a bottle). Shiesh 04-09-2005, 17:11 Originally posted by nick2 I drink just about every day too, usually a bottle of wine, but I'm not falling over after it. A whole bottle of wine is 7-9 units depending on the strength of it but 12.5% is usually 9 units....That 's a whopping 63 units a week if you have a bottle every night...alarming isn't it !! Because you are not 'trollied' or 'binge' drinking you probably won't be aware of just 'how much' you are actually drinking!! :) SpiderPete 04-09-2005, 17:23 I have been known to have a few drinks of lager. Not saying which one I voted for though ;) venger 04-09-2005, 17:34 Originally posted by LordChaverly Nick, I think you need to cut down a little (have half rather than a bottle). .... and you are advisory master then ? I would hate to think what advice you might give me ? robbie 04-09-2005, 17:41 I only really drink on Fridays. I hardly ever drink at home. I may have the odd drink here and there in the week but that's about it. however, I'm making myself work every Saturday for the O/T so drink less on Fridays than before. LordChaverly 04-09-2005, 17:44 Originally posted by venger .... and you are advisory master then ? I would hate to think what advice you might give me ? No Venger, I am not an advisory master (I often give myself the wrong advice). However, I like Nick's persona on here and so was just offering him some friendly advice (even though I've never met him). I watched a TV programme recently about the health dangers of alcohol and one of the subjects was a guy who had just had to have a new liver. He was interviewed and he said he had drunk about a bottle of wine a night for years. I think a bottle a day or thereabouts is excessive. Someone once said that they had got more out of drink than drink had got out of them. I think this is what we should aim for - i.e. using drink rather than let drink use us (and before you accuse me of smug hectoring, I am as guilty as anyone of drinking to excess sometimes and of imbibing more than is probably good for me on a regular basis - advisor advise thyself, as Socrates might have said). Anj1364 04-09-2005, 17:54 My mum and I always have at least a couple of vodka's at night. Didn't used to but got into the habit now. Must be careful though as I am on crutches as the moment and have difficulty balancing on one leg without the drink! Ally68 05-09-2005, 08:22 I don't drink as much as I used to. Don't get the opportunity much these days. I seem to drink more when visiting family, they must be a bad influence on me :suspect: :hihi: :D JonJParr 05-09-2005, 08:30 It's a bit difficult not to when you're an avid wine enthusiast! The only other alcoholic drinks I have are Bombay / Hendricks Gin (w/ tonic, cucumber or lime) and the odd tipple of Armagnac or Cognac. Beer's not really my thing but if pushed I'll have a stout or a real ale. nick2 05-09-2005, 08:32 Originally posted by LordChaverly Nick, I think you need to cut down a little (have half rather than a bottle). The amount I drink went up after I stopped smoking, I find it hard to relax without one or the other. I am a bit worried now, does anyone know the symptoms of liver damage ? JonJParr 05-09-2005, 08:34 A bottle of red wine a day is rather high Nick. Do you not find it difficult to get up of a morning? Though I love wine and enjoy going to a tasting I'm prone to hangovers and thus try to restrict larger sessions (ie. more than half a bottle) to weekends or days when I'm not going to be at work. nick2 05-09-2005, 08:35 Originally posted by JonJParr A bottle of red wine a day is rather high Nick. Do you not find it difficult to get up of a morning? Not realy, I have more trouble after say 2 pints of stella. It takes me between 7pm and about midnight to drink a whole bottle. JonJParr 05-09-2005, 08:38 I think if you're content that your drinking is in check Nick then who am I to question it. For me personally a bottle of wine an evening would be too much but I have friends to whom this is customary and they are none the worse for it. As long as you're drinking good wine..... ;) nick2 05-09-2005, 08:46 I think if I drank a bottle of wine on an empty stomach I would be pretty ill, but I usually start the bottle with my dinner, I think the food slows down the alcohol as I don't usually even feel drunk, just warm and fuzzy. JonJParr 05-09-2005, 08:52 I just love that warm feeling that only a bottle of red wine can bring. You really should try going to a tasting Nick, I think you would really enjoy it! They're not at all pretentious and sitting around in a wine cellar drinking fine wines and nibbling on cheese is so much fun. nick2 05-09-2005, 08:58 I'm worried now. I'm going to try and cut down. I've just checked the symptoms of liver disease and I don't have any of them but I am having nearly 3 times the recommended intake. Cigarettes were fairly easy to give up as I could tell they were harming me but wine might be a bit more difficult. JonJParr 05-09-2005, 09:04 It shouldn't be a case of 'giving up' wine - just limit your intake to 1/2 glasses a day [instead of a bottle]. Surely that isn't hard? nick2 05-09-2005, 09:12 It will be hard, I can't leave a half drunk bottle, it's like drinking half a pint of beer to me. hazel 05-09-2005, 09:35 I always know when asked, isn't it a little early to be drunk that they can't comprehend a person who drinks all the time. hazel Jan39 05-09-2005, 20:13 [QUOTE]Originally posted by Ally68 [B]I don't drink as much as I used to. Thats families for ya! nick2 06-09-2005, 08:18 I only had 1 glass of wine (it was a large glass) last night. I'm quite impressed with my will power. I feel a lot more aware this morning. JonJParr 06-09-2005, 08:40 Fantastic Nick! Even if you never got a hangover from drinking a bottle of wine in an evening I'm positive that this reduction will prove worthwhile [and not just for your liver]. As you say, you will feel a lot more alert as the amount of acetaldehyde and malondialdehyde will be a lot lower [toxic compounds produced as a result of consuming alcohol]. As I've mentioned previously I try to restrict my intake of alcohol to the weekends because I need to feel alert in the mornings. My substitute for wine in the evening is Florida Orange Juice with juicy bits. It's a lot cheaper and contains loads of vitamins instead! nick2 06-09-2005, 08:52 I think I can get 3 bigish glasses out of one bottle of Chateau Margaux so I can justify buying more expensive wine, plus if your only getting one glass a day it might as well be something nice. The thing I read yesterday about how your liver can be rotting without you even knowing it realy scared me, like the anti-smoking advert with the fat dropping out of the cig scared me into trying to stop smoking. JonJParr 06-09-2005, 08:56 At £82.50 a bottle [just for the 2002 vintage] not even I would drink a bottle of Chateau Margaux unless it was a special occasion. Do you by chance mean a bottle of wine from the Margaux appellation not a bottle of Chateau Margaux? nick2 06-09-2005, 09:02 Originally posted by JonJParr At £82.50 a bottle [just for the 2002 vintage] not even I would drink a bottle of Chateau Margaux unless it was a special occasion. I mean the cheap(er) stuff, you can't get a £82 bottle of wine at ASDA :) This kind of thing : http://www.marksandspencer.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=7584&Product_Id=1564723 I might have a trip to Mitchels this weekend though for something a bit different. LaylaR 06-09-2005, 09:05 I like a glass of wine with dinner, and the like, but I can't say that I'm a big binge-drinker. It does happen on occasion, though. Carmine 06-09-2005, 10:12 I have been compared to a fish. |
