View Full Version : Where can I buy unusual fish (to eat) in Sheffield?
Clangeroo 03-09-2005, 16:26 may seem wierd to sk but why is it so hard to find wet fish to buy other than standard supermarket stuff - I had 'grouper' on holiday and it was great. anyone know where I can buy it?
cgksheff 03-09-2005, 16:38 Get yourself down to the Fish Market at Castle Markets for a greater variety of fish.
You are most unlikely to see any Grouper though. I think that it is only tropical and is also on the Marine Conservation Society list of fish to be protected.
My mum shops in Chesterfield. The market over there has a great meat and fish section. She buys all sorts of fish there. Plus the outside market and surrounding shops makes a good day out for her. Better parking than in Sheffield.
JH Mann in Hillsborough is the best fish shop in the City,by a mile. They'll sell you Red Sea Perch, Red Snapper ,Sea Bream and, being enormously helpful people would,I'm sure buy in any speciality species you fancy. The shop is on Hillsborough Place, right near Hillsboro Corner
jdgraham83 05-09-2005, 07:23 Can you get that killer blowfish stuff there????:gag:
I second the vote for the Mann shop in Hillsborough. Proper traditional fishmongers with lot of pride in what they do.

Tartempion 16-04-2006, 08:15 My friend bought octopus in castle market once. That seemed quite unusual for Sheffield:suspect:
LadyInRed 16-04-2006, 08:45 Yeah Peter Mann's is the best for unusual and im sure if they dont have it they could get it, the telephone number is 01142343538.

You mean 'Fugu' ?
I would be surprised if they do stock it, cos it's supposed to be quite expensive and a delicacy. (In Japan.) Apparently, you have to be a skilled sushi chef to kill one of these things, as it is poisonous. I doubt that they'll sell it for the domestic market.
funkyukgal 19-04-2006, 02:18 Hmm, unusual fish..try chinese supermarkets...try the one near the trade n save shop..
Tartemption - Its not unusual to get octopus...most supermarkets stock them :)
I was passing through Woodseats at the weekend, and noticed a fishmongers there with a couple of lobsters on show, so they might be worth a try. Not sure of the name.

Groupers are not tropical, you get them in the Med.

I heard that you had to be a trained gladiator as they are so dangerous :P
Seriously, I think it's the preparing/cooking that is the difficult bit. The killing, that's probably quite straight forwards.
JonJParr 20-04-2006, 13:22 Fugu (pufferfish) has to be prepared by a licenced sushi chef in Japan. Most of these sushi chefs have to train for approx 10 years before they are allowed to serve Fugu to paying customers. All the discarded and most poisonous pieces have to be sealed in a locked container before they are removed by officials who take them away to be incinerated.
An interesting fact for you: even though the sushi chef removes the most poisonous pieces of the pufferfish which would otherwise kill a diner the toxins contained in Fugu are so high that they seep into the surrounding tissue. This is why when you eat Fugu it makes your mouth feel numb - not disimilar to the experience of receiving novacaine at the dentist. I've heard it said that the meat is actually rather bland but, as is central to Japanese culture, the thrill of chancing with death has been the driving force behind it's escalation to the level of 'delicacy'.
LifeOfStyle 20-04-2006, 18:44 Try eating Captain Birds Eye Fish Fingers with chilli sauce with your central heating turned right up.
It add to the tropical atmosphere if you wear a sun hat, khaki shorts, cool shades and eat them in the flower gardens!
