Geoff 07-01-2004, 21:13 Welcome to the forums :) If you search (see menu on left) for the word "dialect" you will find several, similar threads in the past. I'm not saying you were wrong in starting this thread (it has it's own angle) but I thought you might be interested in seeing what's already here. Sam Miguel 07-01-2004, 21:14 Nay-oo, it dunt mek no difrence ter me. 'Ahl orless tork proper like worrawertortto. But yes, I do take your point. The language is changing not just in our region, but everywhere. It's due to the media and the ease of travel in this ever shrinking world. duffman 07-01-2004, 21:17 Thanks geoff! I only just joined the site today and i've not had much time to go through everything, i'll check it out. Sam Miguel 07-01-2004, 21:26 Yes, same here Duffman: I'll slow down a bit, too!! RPG 07-01-2004, 22:40 worse than the "innit" group, is the "OK yarr" - thinks-they-are-important-because-they-were-born-into-money-instead-of-earning-it groups. Sam Miguel 07-01-2004, 22:52 Yes, the 'super' brigade who, and I don't mean this disrespectfully you understand, are well on the way to making dramatic emergences out of their own mouths. t020 07-01-2004, 23:01 Originally posted by duffman Is it me or is anyone botherd by the fact Sheffield and local dialect is dying out to the "innit" language of todays youth? The "innit" language bothers me, but so to does the heavy Sheffield local dialect because: - it sounds common - to some, it may convey a lack of intelligence - language is a means of communication, which can only happen if both parties understand what is being said I am also "bothered" by the title of this thread - "Orreight nah?" can hardly be described as clear and meaningful like thread titles supposedly have to be, yet for some reason this has been overlooked by moderators who are all too quick to change titles such as "Is fishing cruel?" to "Fishing, is it cruel?". Except that we didnt change the title, it was just your "bad english" and the logs prove it, and as the admins of the world say "the logs dont lie" as you well know  nomme 07-01-2004, 23:11 Originally posted by t020 I am also "bothered" by the title of this thread - "Orreight nah?" can hardly be described as clear and meaningful like thread titles supposedly have to be, yet for some reason this has been overlooked by moderators who are all too quick to change titles such as "Is fishing cruel?" to "Fishing, is it cruel?". Everyone knows how much I hate that style of thread title! Not sure why it wasn't picked up by the logs, but believe me, I didn't call the thread that. t020 07-01-2004, 23:20 Originally posted by nomme Changed just for you. :D xxxx Nomme Why thank you. Sam Miguel 07-01-2004, 23:31 And what is so wrong with: 'Fishing: is it cruel?' As opposed to 'Is fishing cruel?' It is not bad English at all - it is just a case of shuffling the words around, putting the verb at the beginning of the sentence, adding a colon for added interest, and all-in-all the statement has more impact. OK, it's a newspaper headline-type-style, but it is perfectly acceptable. t020 07-01-2004, 23:44 Originally posted by Sam Miguel And what is so wrong with: 'Fishing: is it cruel?' Also, a comma was used as opposed to a colon, which meant it was punctuated incorrectly. Editing is supposed to be used when the thread title doesn't clearly identify the main subject of the thread, so in my fishing thread the editing was not necessary. In this thread, however, it was, yet it was overlooked until I pointed it out. Geoff 08-01-2004, 00:05 Closing thread until morning t020 please stop using other people's threads to moan about the most petty of issues. It's 1.05am now and I have neither the time or energy to split/sort out this thread - so closing it until tomorrow to prevent the workload increasing! |
