View Full Version : Electric wheelchairs, can you buy or hire them?
Moonbird 05-05-2010, 18:38 My Mum is waiting for one from the NHS, it is a 3 month wait and she is desperately unhappy, she cannot leave her flat now without someone to push her along and after 3 months of being stuck in there she is so miserable and beginning to just give up.
Is there anywhere that one can be hired for a few months? or even bought 2nd hand?

Does anyone know anywhere in Sheffield as not sure if we could get one home from there when I think about it.
WallBuilder 06-05-2010, 11:00 There's a shop mobility at Crystal Peaks and another one in the city centre. I think I remember them renting out chairs for longer periods and even if they don't any more they may well be able to point you in the right direction
duckweed 06-05-2010, 13:23 Shopmobility does rent them out for a month at a time. Why not take your Mum for a shopping trip hiring for a day from shopmobility and see how she goes? You can buy 2nd hand ones through Ebay, the local free ads etc.. but I would talk to the people in Shopmobility because they are not selling anything and can talk about what kind of scooters there are so if you do buy 2nd hand you are not buying one thats not suited to her needs.

sorry I wasn't sure but know my Dad has always hired from them but like I said always manual wheelchairs.
duckweed 06-05-2010, 19:05 Basically there are 3 sizes of scoota. A small folding one that can go in the boot of the car or bus etc. This is good if you only use it for short journeys over the flat and are not very heavy. The medium size goes brisk walking space can go longer distance on the flat and can climb some of the medium sized slopes. Some mediums will come apart to be packed into larger car boot. They do take up a fair bit of room even taken apart, Then there is the large one which goes 8mph or more has great hill climbing ability and great mileage but does not fold down and is extremely heavy and needs to be registered with road tax people. You would need an accessible shed or garage for the large one. You also have to think what happens if you break down when out with a scoota. I can phone my husband and we have a ramped van that can take all 3 sizes of scoota. So if you buy one you need to know which is suitable and make sure you have storage and backup.
Moonbird 06-05-2010, 19:33 Thank you very much everyone, I did ring the shop mobility in Chesterfield and they were meant to ring me back...but didn't
I may try Crystal peaks shop mobility tomorrow see if that brings anything.
Duckweed Mum can't have a scooter where she lives because she would want to ride it along corridors, only electric wheel chairs are allowed inside, thank you though :)
duckweed 06-05-2010, 20:42 My fold up scooter is small enough to be indoors. There is a special electric wheelchair that is both.
duckweed 07-05-2010, 01:14 I've Pm'd you about one I saw advertised. Hope that helps.

Shop-mobility Sheffield don't hire power chairs, but they do provide manual wheelchairs, and "Mobility Scootas" for day loan and for longer term hire.
Chesterfield Shopmobility do have a small number of powerchairs which they hire out for approximately £40 per month on a long-term hire. They can be contacted on 01246 559331.
Moonbird 11-05-2010, 22:14 The manager of the sheltered housing that Mum lives in has given permission for her to have a small scooter for indoors use until the NHS sort out her powered wheelchair, we got a nice little scooter on Sunday, seeing Mum riding it is a sight for sore eyes....but you don't want to be anywhere near watching her :hihi: she almost rode it out of a window yesterday :help:
Just in case anyone else is looking in the future, I found it impossible to hire a power chair anywhere that wasn't massively expensive, and very difficult to find one as well, scooters again very expensive with a large deposit, the shop mobility at Chesterfield have decided that Sheffield is too far to hire a scooter out to.
In the end it was cheaper to buy a scooter for the short term and we will probably sell it on once Mums power chair comes.
Thank you very much everyone for all your help and input...much appreciated :)
danmas86 05-06-2010, 12:11 Sheffield Shopmobility:
Sheffield shopmobility are a charity which provides mobility scootas and wheelchairs to people who need them.
Their trademark is smiles open doors, and they live up to it. They are all really friendly and helpful.
The website is here: http://www.shopmobility-sheffield.org.uk/
When you first go in,hey ask to see proof of ID such as an official letter, passport etc and they teach you how to use the equipment.
If you wish to borrow for more than a day they also ask for a deposit of £20 for wheelchairs and £100 for scootas. Deposits are refunded after the item has been brought back.
Wheelchairs are free to borrow, donations are apriciated but not required.
Scootas are £2.50 for 3 hours, £4 for a day, £25 for a week.
They have a safety policy of servicing all vehicles at least once every six weeks, (and after every use) if you need one for longer than that then they will ask you to bring it in after six weeks and they will give you another.
They have three offices, eldon street (next to the tesco on west street), waingate (castle market) and crystal peaks.
(chesterfield/meadowhall are different organisations.)
If you want to buy a scoota/wheelchair, they are great people to ask for advice, because they are a charity with lots of experience, also they sometimes have a couple for sale, as they are always renewing their stock.
