Got a phone call today of a person claiming he wanted one of the items I was selling in the ADmag. I was waiting on another call and asked him to give me his number so I could call back. He then claimed he was at work and couldnt. So I then asked him to phone back in 15 min.

So anyway he did, and he said "I noticed you have alot of ads in the admag" now lets have a look at that statment. I Have ads in different unrelating sections. He would only know that if he:
1) was looking for matches in all ads for perticula phone numbers
2) he worked for admag

So anyway he then went on to ask me if i souced items. Basically he was asking if I was buying and selling using the ADmag.

Now of course I was not, but if I was it would not be any of his buisiness at all. As those are private sales and there is nothing anyone can do about it. It is also no busiiness of the tax man either as indeed those are private sales.

People buy and sell on ebay all the time (I myself use ebay for buying items, and I also sell things there as the ADmag now sucks)

Anyone else had a call like that? and what do you think about this call?

I was thinking of writing a complaint to admag over this, this is outrages if it was indeed an admag worker. And if so.. with the dryup of customers using the admag... way to go.

Did you do a 1471 on the number?

If you got a name then ring the Admag office reception and ask to speak to him.

It CAN be an issue for the taxman if you sell over a certain amount (Capital Gains) or if you are buying stuff to sell (Trading). I don't know what the level is for Capital Gains but it's in the mid-thousands, I think. With Trading then any profits you make are taxable as part of your normal income. However, I'd be surprised if they were pursuing people in that way.

The Inland Revenue are taking a growing interest in the number of people making a living from trading on ebay, through publications such as admag and even via car boot sales.

I doubt if they would have used the approach you describe, it could possibly have been someone trying to off load some items for you to sell on, or someone with a rival publication who may have gone on to tout for your business.

There's nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide. Though I do acknowledge your point about unsolicited phone calls whoever they are from.

Don’t let it bother you.

I get frequent strange phone calls since I advertised in Yellow Pages last year. I get people from newspapers leaving messages on my answerphone asking how my advertising with them went. Of course I haven't advertised with them but it's a way of getting me to call them back.

People also send me invoices for goods I haven't ordered in the hope I'll not realise and pay them.

I get deluged with calls from people selling advertising in aid of children’s charities. I doubt there's any children’s charity involved but these people will say and do anything to get your money.

My point is that once you advertise you open yourself up to allsorts of nuisance calls and con men. The best you can do is tell them to p*** off and they'll move onto the next number in the list.

If this is your first such call you may be kicking yourself for not asking "and what business is it of yours?" as soon as he stuck his nose in but you'll know next time. :)

Too true - it gets even worse if you advertise in a local rag, advertisers spend all day going through it canvassing.

the caller had with held his number. Pradictable really.

Just recently we opted in on a BT thing so we wouldnt get stupid calls from companies. Our number is ex-directory you see.

We got automated messages and crap. Very lame advertising indeed. If people are annoyed with their adverts they wont touch em at all. (banner ads and popups on the net are a simular thing)

I don't think it sounds to odd.If I get an ad-mag I do tend to read most sections, and often see the same number, almost sub-consciously,I wouldn;t let it bother you.

He was probably from the AdMag.

And, it is their business (AdMags, that is) if you were "out-sourcing items", as you would then be classed as business advertiser, which carries a fee.

Heh, yes but they didn't have a basis for asking as I only have 5 adverts in. (all in seperate sections, btw aswell)

isnt there a thing you can put in your ad (been that long since sold through ad-mag) i think its NCR meaning no canvessers reply

this is designed to stop people ringing you up after who deal in trade goods.

probably not what you were looking for but thought i would mention it.
