Last year my six asparagus plants had about 3-4 spears each but as it was the first year I had planted them I was really good and didn't harvest any. This year though one plant has one thick spear about 5 cm high so far and another pathetic spindle is peeping through from another....
The RHS advice is to harvest from mid April to Mid June, - chance would be a fine thing! Has the bad weather killed them? have they rotted or am I just being impatient?
Mine haven't come up yet either Debk, I'm thinking it's because of the cold so they might surface a bit later?
I'll be gutted if they've died as this was their third year and I've been holding off harvesting them til now!
Ah, there may be hope yet then!
mine have gone to seed already where i live (bulgaria) it only takes a day and they have gone from pickable to seed.
Do i collect these seed looking things or leave them, last year i just left it all but this year i have more asparagus is that because i didn't pick them??
help n advice needed
With my past asparagus bed I picked each spear when it was about 6-8" high. In England you stop harvesting in mid-June to allow the plant to build up its energy for next year. I then gave my plants an extra boost by feeding with a general fertiliser.
still only 2 spears this year though:confused:
Only 2 spears from 6 plants :( how disappointing. Do you reckon the bad winter got them? - should I wait patiently until next year or dig the plot over and start again with something else?
