View Full Version : Soap Operas: The Bane of Modern Civilisation?!?
Ahh, to hell with it...I'm bored and I just finished the last of my beer.
As far as I'm concerned, Soap Operas are the largest drag factor on the intellectual progress of humankind. They sap the very will to live from us and I think they should be banned under the same international laws than prohibit the torture and illegal imprisonment of individuals.
But what do you think?

I think they've been conditioned with remote controls that sent 50.000 volts up their arm when they tried to change channel...otherwise there's no sane reason they would watch this sh*te.
Chris_Sleeps 03-09-2005, 15:59 Its a situation of intellectual snobbery here i think. I read, i write, i play music, but i also enjoy relaxing for half an hour and watching Corrie every few days. Whats wrong with that?
I dunno I just think they're s**t.
Only soap I like is the one you use to get clean in the bath.
And I don't think many people I know would classify me as an intellectual.

It isn't intellectual snobbery to hate soap operas and reality programmes.
If I were to say say that they have no intrinisc value and that they are at the forefront of the slow process of dumbing down that is being seen on television then I could be accused of intellectual snobbery.
My actual opinion, however, is purely and simply that they are boring. Soap Operas are quite possibly the most depressing programmes on television (I mean really, who wants to spend half an hour every day watching a bunch of cockneys/mancs moaning and arguing?), while Reality TV programmes are just attempts by those taking part to get their faces on television. Why should I induldge these people's desperate pleas for attention when I have a perfectly functioning remote control?
the people who watch soaps and stuff like Bad lads army must be daft, talk about watching paint dry:loopy:

What would you rather watch then?! And no, just5 cos I watch Neighbours does NOT mean I am a Chav, to be a Chav you have to be an avid Trisha watcher, and I'm not.. I've only ever seen bits of it while channel surfing during the morning.

What's a dama? You mean Drama?!
Although Neighbours is the only soap I never miss, I don't really watch Corrie and Eastenders bores the hell out of me despite the fact that I fancy Kacey Ainsworth aka Little Mo Slater.

Make it so! :D
Save me from Soaps!
We get in from walking the dog at 8:30pm and I think I'm safe as Eastenders is over...but no, the second helping of the televisual slop know as "Corrie" is just about to start!

BrainThrust 06-09-2005, 10:51 Soap opera could be the new opiate of the masses.
Still, with soap getting consistently higher audiences that other forms of television TV execs are going to keep making it. Soap is also cheap to make since after an initial outlay you have sets you will always use. Character wages are cheaper too, since you want everyman faces, and there is no security from being dropped as a character at any time. Not just that but Soap opera is so popular as it has 4 types of appeal, not to mention it's 'voyeuristic relish' (a term catherine geraghty uses) whereby we know more about the character intricate lives than even their onscreen friends.
Soap Opera may not appeal to me or many others but do not think that we are in a majority, Soaps viewing figures are very high and so a certain spread of demographics (not just housewives and teenagers) must be watching it, according to BARB data.
Soap seems to be a bit like marmite, if you don't like it, you REALLY don't like it, enough to complain about it on an internet forum.

I'm still hoping that some form of opiate will one day become the opiate of the masses...

I once went to a lecture, the closest thing the guest speaker ever got to a joke was when he said 'Heroin: the opiate of the masses'
Suprisingly though, I was hooked despite him being the most boring man ever, the subject topic was interesting, especially to a teenager with a curiosity, it laid out the facts and let you see what was really happening, not just told 'they are bad'.

Lickable 06-09-2005, 12:20 I came back from a 3 week holiday in the states not so long back. The curse of the soaps had been lifted. I was no longer a slave to prime time television. Then... one sunday afternoon. My partner and myself were really bored, and decided to watch the Eastenders Omnibus. Now Once again, i turn to a sponge for an hour or two every evening.
I say ban them!!! I am too weak to say no.
