Dont you just hate it when something that youv'e liked for years, like a certern song which was quite unknown to most people, suddenly becomes reay popular and now EVERYONE likes it?
rubydazzler 03-05-2010, 14:11 I'm surprised that they're using it. As most of their customers are women, it seems a bit counter productive to use a song that's more or less a melodic insult to us from beginning to end.
I was confused when I first heard it and couldn't see the relevance to anything in the advert or to John Lewis products?
It will be interesting to see whether they overplay it to the point that everybody hates it. For now the £6m they've spent has upped sales by 40%. A fair investment it would seem. Guess you'll just have to find another secret favourite song though 1ofTheseDays!
Blame it on the soundtrack, a lo-fi version of Billy Joel's She's Always a Woman, blame it on the ferociously aspirational domestic life depicted, or the misty colour-wash – it's working. JohnLewis.com has seen a 39.7% leap in sales, despite the advert's sorry message – 'You're going to die, ladies, so buy from us, while you still have breath enough to weep'. http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/may/02/john-lewis-ad-sales-boost
as said by Spinac, its worked what more is there to look at. The guys n gals who produced it won't look any further than the stats

I hate it when they're used on adverts. The classics should not be touched.
superblade1! 03-05-2010, 20:39 I hate it when songs become popular you've liked for ages....most recently for me is journey, don't stop believing! and then that crappy american thing glee or something decided to do the worst cover song i've ever heard :)
Fortunately my taste in music never seems to extend as far as being liked by many others so don't really get this problem!
pattricia 03-05-2010, 22:58 Sounds a bit too yukky to me.:gag:

Lol I thought that.
Somebody told me this song was doing will in the charts too.

hahaha, I see what you mean. I've just Googled the lyrics. There must be lots of ways to say you appreciate an independent woman who knows her mind and can be assertive when she needs to be rather than a giggling girl who's always fussing with her appearance and wants to go shopping to buy more shoes and handbags, but this song doesn't seem to be it ...
She can kill with a smile
She can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child,
But she's always a woman to me
She can lead you to love
She can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth
But she'll never believe you
And she'll take what you give her,
as long as it's free
Yeah, she steals like a thief
But she's always a woman to me
Oh--she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh--and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind
And she'll promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you're bleedin'
hahaha too much, enough already. I think this nasty b***h is someone to steer clear of ... hahaha ... let me out of here quick ...
I was confused when I first heard it and couldn't see the relevance to anything in the advert or to John Lewis products?
There no relevance, no connection. Like most ads now they're designed to make you feel good and they hope you'll associate that feeling with their product. For example what has this got to do with mobile phones ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUZrrbgCdYc ?
We're all bored with products. What we want is to feel good, so advertisers sell us feelings and hope we'll buy the product that was shown with the feeling. The truth though - you can spend as much as you like, but you'll never buy a feeling.
milquetoast1 04-05-2010, 13:05 It's not Billy Joel singing it in the advert though is it?
What horribly unpleasant lyrics they are.
"Its score is a reinterpretation of Billy Joel's Always A Woman, performed by Fyfe Dangerfield, of the band Guillemots."

I think Billy Joel must have been deprived of affection as a child and is misinterpreting vindictive manipulative attention as something positive. I bet his first love was Anne Robinson's cruel sister. I bet he pays women to walk over him in razor sharp high heels. Wonder if you can buy them from John Lewis?
"Then she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleedin'" in what context is that excusable???
All hail the Sky+ box- I've missed this advert entirely :)
BananaSplit 04-05-2010, 14:11 I don't quite get why some people are fawning over this advert...
It doesn't say anything to me other than following a small girl grow into an old woman.
