Jenny Ward from City Road worked in the Hotel Reception and married a lad called Eric Ramsdale. They banned strobe lights because they could cause fits in some people.

Was it Brian worthy? I grew up in Bamford but it was before my time, many of my friends used to go to the discos, It's sad to see the Marquis as it is now. They were going to make it into a Hilton hotel but the building work has stopped. Someone said they are waiting for the Peak park to back down so they can continue with their first plan of making it into flats.

And Georgie Shirtcliffe pinching cars in Blackpool at the weekend. Back in Sheffield by Monday and new Plates and Paint by Wednesday,, (Bill was not part of this)

Do you mean what we called "Bradder Cafe".......after leaving the Marquis, head towards Castleton. Left at the traffic lights by "the travellers".
Bradwell Cafe was on the left as you went through Bradwell village.
The cafe was accessed from an outside staircase to the upper floor of the building.
Best all day breakfast I've ever eaten...

Marquis and Robin Hood - our paths must have crossed. Used to go over the Robin as soon as my Mum gone around the corner after dropping us off at the youth club opposite - must have been about 1971. Marquis a bit later when I could drive. Other Derbyshire haunts included the Moon at Stoney Middleton, and we once walked all the way back from a day on the lash at Monsal Head, as the driver was too bladdered to take a chance on. Used to be no shortage of pubs along the route - bit of a blur now! :hihi:

On the night it closed,DJ John played the final single, and told us over the mike to,and I quote,'wreck the place'!! We followed his instructions to the letter!! Dont know if anyone remembers, but the ceiling was a huge jigsaw(hence the name.jigsaw disco),3/4 ply and seperate pieces, must have been a pain to put up,easy to pull down with a load of drunken teenagers swinging from it!! I had a piece of that jigsaw on my bedroom wall for a few year after that!!Regards all,Colin aka Sid.

What part of Bamford - anywhere near Shatton Bridge?

Not boarded up anymore as they have knocked it all down now apart from the building in the middle, Still looks an eyesore nothing really happening with it apart from they have built a wall around where they have been digging. Yes it's the pub near Shatton, opposite the petrol statiohn

A planning application of 2006 here (http://resources.peakdistrict.gov.uk/ctte/planning/reports/2006/060818Item6-1.pdf) for holiday apartments was apparently approved subject to conditions, but last year The Star carried an article here (http://www.thestar.co.uk/food/Big-plans-bring-hope-to.5056143.jp) about the Hilton hotel project. As Labyrinth wrote, the demolition has gone ahead apart from the (presumably listed) central part and no construction has yet begun apart from a (very nicely built) drystone perimeter wall. Maybe it's the downturn in the economy that is the reason for the lack of progress. I find it hard to agree with the developer's statement, as reported in The Star, that a new hotel will "give a heart to the Hope Valley" but anything might be better than the present mess.

A bit before your times ? There is a pub on the way to Castleton in the area of the Marquis of Granby, I forget the name, but it stands looking down the road to Bradwell. In the 50's a neighbour took us kids in the car to Castleton, it was a beautiful 1930's Armstrong Siddley. As he was passing this pub he had to swerve for another car and ran into the stone windowsill of the pub, does the chunck it took out still show ?

I remember a night in 1974 when there was a punchup from hell. It was like a scene from a Wild West saloon, with people sliding across the floor into tables, and then getting clouted with chairs over the head. I believe that the disc jockey was taken to Hospital.

Someone later said that it was the Firth Brown lads.

A bit embarrassing as I was showing this place to my now brother in law (a Southerner) as an example of a nice night out near Sheffield.

Was anyone on here there that night ???

We didn't start it ! I remember giving my pint pot, the chunky type with a handle, to a chap I thought was a glass collector. He wandered across the dance floor to his mates and stood grinning at us.

You could hear the banjoes tuning up.

At this moment our numbers were a bit low, as a tranny van full had just escorted some young ladies home.

Just like in the movies the cavalary arrived and a good time was had by all.

Loved the place ....... the Haychatters mob weren't to keen on us ...:hihi: :hihi:

No, I regret that I didn't. What happened was that a week or two after the ''ruck'' I mentioned to a (then) lad, Chris, that I had taken my sister's boyfriend and my sis' out for a quiet evening/disco to show him northern hospitality, and it had ended up like a scene from a cowboy film.

Chris then said that he had heard about the ruck, and that some of his mates were talking about it.

I can't recall Chris's surname at present, but he was a bright lad with long lanky hair who had been to High Storrs, and done well, but he didn't want a job pen pushing.

I believe he's still a turner at Forged Rolls, at the time of the Marquis incident I was working on the next machine to him. He was a good bloke to work with.

Sheffield, the big village, rings true again.
