Does anyone know if there are part-time evening classes where I could learn beginners cantonese in Sheffield?

I would ring Sheffield College - I'm not sure of the number - and ask. I know of someone who was doing beginner's Mandarin, so I would imagine there would be a fair chance of Cantonese being on offer.

One disadvantage would be that it isn't the right time of year to be starting a course.

Waaagh Po gi! You could try the chinese comunity centre on london rd, most of them speak cantonese and you might be able to put up an advert and get someone to teach you chinese while you help them with english?
