The nurses in the children's hospital are really nice, and the view over Weston Park is really pretty with lots going on to look at when the weather is nice, but it's great to be back home!

Last Tuesday Strixlet brought up an entire feed over the pair of us (and the sofa), so that was a trip to the GP. As I'd been ill the night before, it was suggested we'd both had the same thing, we were given advice and no meds, and were sent home - which I was totally happy with

Come Saturday she had diarrhea and a temp, so I rang NHS direct... and we were sent to the GP out of hours at Northern General... who then sent us to the Children's Hospital, just to get checked out...

So off we go to Children's, thinking we're going to be there for an hour or so being poked and prodded, but they were very concerned about meningitis, took blood and urine samples, made four attempts at a lumbar puncture before giving up out of concern for how much trauma they were putting her through, so they admitted us :(

It was a frightening experience, and emotionally draining watching needles and IV antibiotics going into my six week old daughter... especially when there may be no need for all this. It was all precautionary

They did find a minor urine infection, and the rest was probably a gastric bug, but it's great to know everybody there was working so hard to make sure nothing serious was at the root of it all

Thanks to everybody at Sheffield Children's Hospital :)

Glad to here LO is all ok! I had a similar experience when DD was tiny too, its awful and I can empathise with how you felt. The staff in the children's really are amazing though!

I'm glad that your LO is ok and I understand your relief at being home!

We spent 8 days on M1 when our daughter was just 3 weeks old, as she got late onset group B strep and was developing meningitis. The staff were amazing and really looked after us. One of both of us were there permanently for the whole time and they were so brilliant to us.

I just felt like she wasn't my baby when we were in there though. I wanted to get home to be a mummy properly again.

Fingers crossed, we haven't been back! I hope you never have to go back either.

Lulla x

Thanks everybody

I'm glad it wasn't just me then :(

It was rather odd feeling like I was surplus to requirements for the first time. So far Strixlet and I have been treated like two parts of one entity, which is only right when you're breast feeding, esp when feeds wind up being only two hours apart thanks to a gastric bug!

There's a strict policy of not providing food to parents, but trying to keep up a balanced diet in there was hell (and I suspect I failed). They provide formula for bottle fed babies, so you'd think it'd only be sensible to ensure breast fed babies are getting fed properly too. I'd not be complaining if it were even possible to pay to be fed!

I also want to thank Bonny for offering to bring us home if they discharged us whilst Mr Strix wasn't in Sheffield. It was really appreciated :)

That's unusual Strix. I was in hospital having similar tests done on my DD when she was 5 days old. I was trying to breast feed but topped up with formula too. I was in Derby Hospital at the time and I was fed due to me breast feeding. Although, I have to say it wasn't the best food or the best experience as a Mum. Terrifying is more like it. Glad all has worked out okay.

That's interesting Doodle. One of the nurses said she'd worked in a different area previously and was surprised to find Sheffield doesn't feed breastfeeding mothers

I know hospital food has a reputation similar to the now extinct British Rail sandwich, but figuring out how to stay adequately fed when your head's busy with what's happening to your baby is one thing that shouldn't be an issue

Glad all turned out well for you and your little one in the end :)
I had to stay there on Thurs night after Emily was admitted with bronchilitus (sp?) she wasnt feeding and they thought she might need an NG tube and O2 - luckily she didnt need either. Can totally sympathise with you and we were only there for one night. The staff there (esp on M1) were amazing and were sooo helpful, we're def lucky to have such a wonderful hospital on our doorstep xx

What an ordeal Strix. I'm so, so glad that everything is ok with Heather, it must've been such a worrying time. I hope you're taking care of yourself :)
