I am currently on placement at Walkley primary and was pleased to see that in one class they have a project going on where the whole class are learning to knit. They are putting together a class blanket made up from the kids 'squares' :)

That's good! You'll have to put a picture here when it's finished.:)

It's great when you see kids knitting, I wish mini radish's school would introduce it, they do the other crafts. It would be great to see it when it is finished. Perhaps contacting one of the knitting magazines to see if they would be interested in putting an article together about it. The kids would be proud to see their work in print.

I learned to knit at school, we made donkeys. They were garter stitch squares and rectangles of various sizes, stuffed and sewed together. I swear that's why I don't like sewing up now, my first project was all sewing. I didn't get the plot and I sewed the neck rectangle with the fold the wrong way so my first attempt was more of a giraffe. It must be the best part of forty years ago and I still remember grumbling about the unfairness of it all when the teacher made me take the head back off, unpick the neck and do it right.

Hope the kiddies in your class are appreciating their lessons. (http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2010/05/06/era-of-knitting-lessons-in-schools-to-come-to-an-end-as-cash-saving-is-agreed) Knitting encourages children in so many different areas of life, be it maths, confidence or art. WHat a shame it is seen fit to cut the funding.

my first introduction to knitting was with Mrs Mottershaw at Herdings Junior school. We knitted a purse that had a long handle so we could wear it. All done in our house colours. I Loved it.

Sherakapod would have been long gone from Juniors by the time you were ready to go to school............:heyhey:

(It's been a slow day in the shop so I am having to use other channels for the ritual abuse of the knitterati..)

Awww, god bless Mrs Mottershaw, or Mrs Motor Show as we used to call her.
I still remember a phrase from one of her french lessons
"il y a beaucoup d'étoiles"
Not bad for over 40 years ago :)

They haven't done knitting but they are doing embroidery and cross stitching at school, you should here the child "Mum I'll show you how to do a running stitch"!!!!

.....I should really get my CRB to get back into school to teach them how to do knitting properly ;)

I help out at the lunchtime knitting classes at my kids' primary school. One of the girls has just finished a cabled beret. She's taken it home but I'll try to get a photo later in the week. Most are working on little teddy bears and purses. I am so proud of them.
