Get yourself to the shops and get some ready made pastry or a just add water pastry mix!

Easyest is to buy pastry, but.

You need (for basic shortcrust)

2oz butter (must be cold)
2oz lard (must also be cold)
8oz Flour (must be plain)

rub the flour (using your thumb and fingers) into the butter and lard to get a kind of breadcrumb consistancy, then add enough water (bit at a time) to make it bind into a ball, don't get it too wet.

You have to wrap the flour in cling film and chill it in the fridge for half an hour before using it.

You can add sugar to make the pastry sweet, not sure how much though as I never add sugar, a couple of tablespoons should be ok.

Sorry Kirky...I didn't mean it that way....;) I applaud all blokes prepared to have a go at something like this...especially when it is including the children!

It's just an experience that happened to me when I was kid...my Mam was in hospital and our Dad wanted to cook every meal from scratch like in the 1940's - we'd wait til 8pm some nights for our tea...

That's why I suggested the ready mix!

Good Luck with it!!

good tip for you - run your hands under the cold tap for a while before you make it. cold hands make better pastry !!

And when you're rolling out the pastry make sure you knead the dough with a little flour, the work surface and the rolling pin so that the dough doesnt stick.
