Can anyone remember attending Norfolk School on Craddock road, Arbourthorne - around 1980 - 83? I remember this fantastic drama teracher we had called Dave Bradley - does anyone have any memories of the school? It is a shame but the school has now been demolished - apparently - I now live in Australia

I went to the nursery that was attached to the school in the late 1940s. one of the things I can remember is a certain smell of the stew that was served some dinner-times not a bad smell more like a nice distinctive smell, in the warmer months our daily sleep was not inside but outside in the sun. The nursery itself was at the bottom of Craddock Rd very near the Garage side wall. Another thing I can remember the sun always shone in the Summer.

I was there 1983-87.

Incidentally, someone's posted a few pictures of some of the old teachers at Norfolk on the Friendsreunited page.

Mr. Headley, Mr. Matthews, Mr Cook - They're all there!

Mr Bradley left in 1981 I think. I was about to choose drama as a o'level option but then he left - I was devastated!

I remember Andy Pack pe teacher and Mr Pyle. I heard that he was still teaching 2 years ago at a school in handsworth I think?

My Grandma still lives opposite the school site - but the area has certainly changed since I left in 1983.

I now live in australia but still have fond memories of the the school - and many of the teachers. But I must admit I gave the English teacher - 'dragon' freeman the worst time of her life - we seemed to get on each other's nerves all the time - she hated me and vice versa - funny old world - if you had said then that I would become a teacher - I would have choked with laughter! but now I teach English and Drama :)

all that is left now is the old middle school which i believe is now a school for unruly children.

So no change there then :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

It's really sad to see the school field in that state. :(

talking of the school field, i used to live on city road and our back garden faced the school so i couldnt even get away from it when i went home!.

mind you, it did come in handy for jumping over our wall onto when mum chased me with a rolling pin when i cheeked her lol

I went to norfolk from 1974 when i started to 1986 when i left, here are a couple of names i remember, from the infants

Can't believe i've missed this thread until now! :o

I started at Norfolk nursery in 1979 and left in 1990 so i'm pretty much sure i know you Trophyman. We must have gone through the entire school together 8)
I'm thinking of a name of someone who used to live on City Rd, opposite the Esso station. Are your initials CT? If so, your mum spent a while looking after me and my brother after school :)

It's brilliant to see all the teachers names again. Just reading them again brings back tons of memories :D

Keep the replies coming peeps, i'm loving it

I don't remember a Mr Headley but the name rings a bell
The teachers that were considered 'old school' were the likes of Mr Cook, Mr Crozier, Mr Shackleton, Mr Beaumont etc.

Someone mentioned that houses might be built on the old school field. That is going to prove a logistical nightmare due to the whole tunnel network under there.
An entrance was uncovered near the annexes (sp) and we went down a couple of times. Very spooky :suspect:

My brother went to Norfolk as well. He is 34 now. He might remember some of the older names.

Angie v
11-02-2006, 18:16
If your bro is 34 then he must have left the year after me, so he must know quite a few of the older teachers, what is your brothers name, i might know him.

vidster
11-02-2006, 18:22
He is called Robert. He didn't quite make it to the end though. He liked to play the rogues part

He's an IT tutor now though. Norfolk must have got something right :hihi:

The whole of the top corner, at the junction with Cradock Road, and Brimmesfield was built on about four years ago.

It's called "Cradock Mews" or something.

I remember some gypsies camping on the school field a few years ago,and a horse of theirs getting loose!

I left in 90 so you guys are a few years older than me :P I'm trying to think of some names you might remember though. When i was ready to leave the juniors i knew a few names from the seniors thanks to my older bro.

You might recognise Russel and Jason Moat. I was in the year below Nigel and the year above Michaela (sp).
I remember the name Goddard, Dower, Dean pinder (i was in the same year as Anthony)..... *Brain fade sets in. Goes to think of more names...*

The Moats lived on the corner of Northern Ave and Spring lane. Russel now lives near Arbourthorne school (i think). I heard a rumour about Nigel but i've seen any proof so i'll not go in to it :?
Emma Pickering... A tall blond lass? I think she was a year or two older than me. I last saw her in Roxys about 12 years ago.

Angie v
11-02-2006, 19:08
she was quite tall and yes she was blonde, but it hoguth she left about the same time as you, she will be 32 in april, so you do the maths when she left school, but i thought she left in 90, but i might be wrong

Angie v
11-02-2006, 19:10

There's a horse in the field pretty much all the time now. I think someone in the houses on City Rd owns them.

I started Norfolk nursery in the late 60's ..Mrs Whitworth was teacher then I think. Then into a Mrs Longlands class then Mrs Brocklehurst & was going to Mrs Smith but moved from Edenhall Road in 1971. Shame about the old place even though I wasnt there long. Still remember the nursery like it was yesterday .... ok , maybe not but still remember things very clearly.

There is one thing I have been trying out , maybe someone on the forum could help . On the south end of the junior building there seems to me there was a special needs school . It would have been towards the seniors building .
Does anyone know the name of this school ? Google earth shows this section of the building pointing towards the new houses that now replaces the seniors building . I have emailed your local authorities who have gradually passed me from one department to another with the last one not responding to my request . Can anyone help ?

Hiya clocker :)
The building you are talking about is the old Junior school. As far as i am aware the building does not have a new name. The best thing to do is ask the forum member Redrobbo for help. Redrobbo is brilliant when it comes to things concerning Norfolk Park and the surrounding areas :)

PS. I was talking to a friend in Ontario (Muskoka Lakes) tonight. 12" of snow and more on the way apparently *vidster shivers thinking about it*

Hey Vidster ;

Actually the snow is not that bad , one does get used to it . We had over 12 inches last weekend followed by bitter cold temps .
As for the school , yes I know it is the juniors building , but it is the extension that I`m interested in . I can clearly remember handicapped / special needs student there . The play ground is between the juniors building and what was the seniors building .

Thanks for your reply

vidster
15-02-2006, 01:03
I am not aware of any extension unless you are talking about the section that we used to do cookery and science in (running parallel to the top play ground).
When i was there, there were no handicapped facilities :?

clocker
15-02-2006, 01:13
The small building towards Spring Lane (if this is the one you mean ) was used for school supplied lunches . I can remember getting some pretty awful food there . If you mean the long narrow section on the south (?? ) end of the juniors building , yes that is the one I`m talking about . I remember that even in the 50s they bussed kids into this section . The reason I`m curious is that I knew a young lady that went there , we used to exchange note as we were not allowed to talk to the kids in that area . Again , this was in the 50s and I understand many changes have probably taken place . My curiosity has never abated , always wondered what happened to her .
By the way , if you want to pm your email address to me I will send you some photos of Ontario snow .

vidster
15-02-2006, 01:21

From previous postings, I remember Shaun Compton, Sean Cramer, Billy Moss, Vidster, Vidster's brother, PPN_2304, Brian Allen, Dean Pinder and most of the others.

I was driving home last night after a crap day in the office when I got to think who I had to thank/blame for my job in IT.

Mr. Gillott (You're in a workshop lad!) was the self appointed IT Guru of the Norfolk teaching staff wasn't he? I remember he ran the 'computer club' at lunchtimes. He'd charge 5p to get Frak! running on your BBC model B because he was 'Saving up for a joystick'. Ah. Those halcyon days...... Come to think of it though, Norfolk played no part in my career whatsoever.

I left Norfolk in '87.

That is a great story about Mr Gillott charging 5p to load 'Frak' as he was saving up for a joystick.

I remember Mr Pack and Mr Smith (the two sports teachers) had an MG sports car each. They were proper 'playa's' of their time.

I remember Shaun Compton and Billy Moss were in my year.

I used to play cricket for a team with Mr Gillott, Mr Reid, Mr Sadler & Mr Humberstone for a few years after leaving. They were nice blokes, lost touch with them now unfortunately.

Wondered why you up so late , at work are you ?

I'm not at work at that time of night, just a trainee night owl :)

He didn't care what anyone was doing except the ones who were on his beloved NRNIMBUS (what sort of name is that) computer. Then you were a 'chosen' one :hihi:
Come to think of it though, Norfolk played no part in my career whatsoever. Mine neither :? I'm a self employed Joiner now. I think we did woodwork about 30 times in total

Our 'big un' is an IT tutor now yet he says he never even went on the old BBC's at school :suspect:

He was deadly accurate with a blackboard rubber, and could jump onto a table from a standing position with both feet together. He must have been in his late sixties....

LMAO...... I remember when our whole year had a sleep-in just after we went up to the 'seniors'. Of course we crept out about midnight for a wander around, and of course someone said they saw Mrs Duncan (walking over the bridge)
All those Mrs Duncan stories put an extra edge on going down in to the tunnels though :suspect:

I was one of those who went up to Norfolk in 1990 only to have it close down 2 years later and I had to change schools.

I have very fond memories of the place and remember loads of the teachers mentioned and a few pupils :D Memories of 'The Cookie Monster' :o Lordy could he bellow! His classroom got burnt to the ground sometime around the school closing. Had me wondering... it was so sad to see though.:(

I ended up actually going back to school there after they'd turned the old building into the infants and juniors as my daughter went to it's nursery and reception classes before the whole lot came to close. I did a computer course there which was in the old senior building where the hall is, just up the first flight of stairs. Oh the memories of walking in that reception!! :)

I see the grounds regularly which is basically now just that, grounds. All the buildings have gone bar the 'naughty kids' bit which is next to the canteen area. I saw it all being demolished and it was sad to see it go.

That's three from '87 now. I know Les, but I'm not sure about you... Give us a clue. Whose class were you in?
I'm never sure the etiquette on these things, how much info you're supposed to give away about yourself.. Anyway my first name is Neil, I was short (still am quite short) with blonde/brown hair. My memory on form tutors is hazy.. I think she was a sports teacher called Mrs Ried. And in the 5th Year, when most people seemed to have stopped attending except for a few of us, she was a youngish woman (although old at the time if that makes sense) with big teeth.

What about you PPN and Les, who are you?

I remember Mr Shaw was wildly eccentric. Throwing board rubbers and having tantrums. My sister and brother who are older than me, have very fond memories of him, but he seemed to be in dispair with all youth by the time we had him.

I remember Mr Wall was a form teacher for our year - really nice hippy type character with a 'slap head'.

I'm very impressed with everyones spelling on this thread to say we all went to Norfolk!

ahhhhhhhhhhh mrs duncan.

the stories used to flitter round the school that she was a big friend of 1st year teacher miss mcgloin and was with her when she either slipped or was pushed under the train. apparently that is why she haunted the school to be near her old friend. Doesn't Mr Pack still work for the mighty Blades? I nearly fell off the sofa when i saw him doing a press conference on TV about the Blades a few years ago :hihi:

I remember Mr Pack taking us out in the minibus all the time. He would take us out to the middle of nowhere (well, Fox House but we didn't know any better then), point to a track and tell us to start running down it and he would meet us at the bottom.
Something that would never happen these days. Just one more good memory our kids will never have :?

Left in 94 too. It was a pretty big place and the year group was split into two wasn't it? A and B. I was quite quiet at City, a few of us went there from Norfolk and pretty much stuck together like glue as we'd been launched into the school mid way through the seniors.

My tutor when I went up was Mr Shaw.

mr craig
10-03-2006, 22:20
Yeah the year was split in two, i think i was in the first half. Mr Cortney (sp) was my tutor for the last two years i was there. I had Mrs Murphy for maths, Mr Swift for english and i was in the the top group for science (i dont know how, lol)
I still see a couple of people from City pretty regular.

I had mr Jarvis (I think that was his name!) for Maths. Ooo I can remember faces but the names fail me. Erm... an art teacher, she used to have thick eyeliner, I'd say in her late thirties. Quirky style... I think she was my last tutor and was my art teacher. Was their a Mr Stocks? (short tongued) He was my English teacher. I remember Mr Swift. Mr Gabana (sp) was the head and I'll never forget him once screaming at me and a mate for being late LOL.

I'll have a scoot through FR and see what teachers names jump out at me on there :)

I was in B btw. Year 10/11 B

Mrs Stanley went up to City to work. She remembered me. I remember me and my mate standing agog as it was Mr Handcock (Norfolk) that dropped her off and all the 'affair' stories started to ring true though I have no idea if they were both single anyway at Norfolk LOL.

Mr Pyle was indeed teaching at Handswaorth Grange School, he taught me english until I left in 1999. He's since retired but I keep in touch with him through facebook although he's not on very often.

I remember both of them yeah. I don't think i was ever in any of their lessons though.

Mr "stop rattling those vices!" Cook used to make me laugh
Mr Dimalow with his crazy ways
Mr Reeves playing tennis every lunch time
Mrs Beresford going into a panic when i destroyed a thermostat in science
Mr Pack being the girls heart throb
Mr Shackleton. Just how could such a small, quiet man scare so many people?
Mr Spooner was never able to stand still for a minute
Mr Jones.
Mr Sadler dragging me out of a lesson accusing me of stealing something that was never missing
Mr Cockins (sp. May be even wrong name. I have Cockayne in my head as well) rolling up in his Toyota MR2
Mrs Ross trying to squeeze at least one decent note out of us in drama
Mrs Bagnall teaching us how to cook....something
Mr Gillot teaching us the best way to drill a hole in ourselves
Mrs Moor. I don't think i ever spoke a single word to her in all my time there
Miss Page trying to get a decent picture out of us
Mr Beaumont the best teacher i ever had
Mr Crozier. Never attended a single lesson due to being in Mr Beaumonts.
Mrs Stanley. Another of my form tutors
Mr Pyle. The legend. Probably still has his daughter ironing his shirts

I know i am missing a lot but I'm knocking on now. The old grey matter isn't what it used to be.

Terrifying); Mr Smith (woodwork).

Happy days, for the most part.

My younger brother also had to go to a different school for his last year (City school). Unfortunately i think that places you two years below me so i probably wouldn't remember you :(

I remember every single one of your list of teachers. Mrs 'spitfire' Bailey was my tutor in the infants.
Mr Jenkins was a friend of my parents. Something i didn't know about until i wagged it once. Bad idea. Mrs Pleasent was my tutor for a long time in the infants until Mr Adams came along. I always remember Mr Anwyl with his BluTak.

[edit] Looking at your list of secondary school teachers i wonder if you are nearer my age than i thought. I think some of those teachers left before i did.
