View Full Version : From Barcelona to Sheffield
Baldrick 01-09-2005, 02:57 Hi
I'm a guy (27) from Barcelona planning to visit Sheffield in October, around 10 days. I never was in UK before. I've some doubts, maybe somebody can tell me their opinion. Well, i'll visit Sheffield 'cos Pulp it's my favourite band from i was a kid, and i need to walk those streets, i need to put those lyrics on that city. Also, there's a Documentary Film Festival in half october, I'll go during these days, i'm a younger, unknown and poor doc filmmaker. whatelse... yes, i wanna see a match of sheffield ud. or wednesday. so, my questions are:
A. Practic questions
- can u recommend some cheap places to sleep?
- do you know the sheffield film festival? Is it a good documentary ff?
- there's any "sheffield chat" on internet?
- what's the difference between united and wednesday? i think that "wednesday" is a very strange name for a football team. can you imagine "Martedi Milano Associazione di Calcio"? or just "Monday Manchester FC"?
B. Philosophy questions
- what's sheffield? i mean... what's sheffield inside england. you see, barcelona in spain is the reach, the cool, the beach, a place to find a work but at the same time enjoy. sevilla is the hell, lazies during the day big parties every night, madrid is the quiet, la coruña is the hard drugs and fishermen,... what's sheffield for u?
- what does it mean pulp-jarvis cocker for u?
- what's doing pulp now? relax? some concerts?
zenkiu. if somebody wanna a write me that's my email waytonam@hotmail.com
i can reccomend a lots of things about barcelona, also a place to sleep 'cos i'm a recepcionist in a youth hostel. bye
- Baldrick
jdgraham83 01-09-2005, 07:01 Sheffield is exactly the same as Barcelona, only not as hot. You will feel right at home. You should be able to find yourself a cheap room on this website I got loads of replies from foreign people wanting short let rooms when I advertised ours. Crookes is by far the best place to live, and go watch Wednesday not united. Sheffield is the friendliest place in England, dont bother with the south it smells funny
Hi, to answer some of your questions about Sheffield:
A. Practic questions
- can u recommend some cheap places to sleep? How little do you want to spend?
- there's any "sheffield chat" on internet? Sheffield Forum has a live chat forum, just click on the link. It is busiest in the evening and everyone is friendly.
- what's the difference between united and wednesday? Dont know.
can you imagine "Martedi Milano Associazione di Calcio"? or just "Monday Manchester FC"? What's that
B. Philosophy questions
- what's sheffield? Sheffield is inland and about 90 minutes s drive to Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham or Derby. It is a really unique City and where I live just 1 mile from the Centre and yet only a few miles from the Peak District a really beautiful part of the Country. Very hilly and fairly unspoiled. It is like all of the other cities I've lived in, just different language and social customs. The weather in October will probably be wet, damp, cold and rainy so bring woollies and if you want to walk in the Peaks then wet clothes and boots.
- what does it mean pulp-jarvis cocker for u? sorry cant help you with this one.
- what's doing pulp now? relax? some concerts? there are loads of pubs, bars, restaurants; concerts, we've got a City Hall, 2 nationally recognised theatre, ie Crucible & Lyceum and lots of amateur dramatic clubs; we also have 2 Universities and a very large student population who will be back in full force by October
Where to stay? Depends how little you want to pay and I'm sorry I cant help you on this one.
I havent been to a film or concert for years and really dont know anything about what's going on. There are good guides around which you can pick up for free in various City Centre place. I'm sure you'll get a lot of help from other people who can fill out the blanks much better than me and am sure you'll enjoy your stay. Have fun, wendy
Sheffield has the same earth vibration as Barcelona.
Completely blew me away the first time I went to your city.
Even down to the political undercurrent/the awareness of the city's ancestors/the decentness of most of the population/a sharp wittiness/great music scene/racial harmony more or less.
The only thing that's very different is the fact we're landlocked & the weather (oh how I wish we were a few longtitudes lower).
> oh how I wish we were a few longtitudes lower
Latitudes, surely?
But nice sentiment!

hahahahaha. I'm sure you weren't being entirely serious though, surely?
Barcelona is the most amazing city on Earth. Sheffield is not.
Baldrick:
The Sheffield Film Festival is held mainy at 'The Showroom' near the train station. It is world-renowned and attracts film makers from all over. You will love it.
Currently, Sheffield United are better than Wednesday. Perhaps you could could compare with Barcelona and Espanol. :)
In answer to your question "what is Sheffield?". Sheffield is the one of the friendliest, safest cities in England. It may not be as vibrant as Manchester or London, but definitely has a lot going for it and as a unique place. The Peak District is very easy to get to from the city centre and is beautiful countryside. Also, the nightlife is improving (although has a long way to go to match Barcelona!).
I don't really like Pulp so they mean nothing to me but they are seen as some (or perhaps used to be) as musical heroes in the city. They don't seem to be doing much these days. I'm sure there will be some other people who can help you with this.
Hope this helps.

2 words ............. La Terraza!!
I've been to Barcelona a few times and TBH, i was a little dissapointed with the nightlife. I went with high expectations but was a little surprised at the amount of good bars on offer.
Still need to check out Catwalk club (missed it last year cos g/f was ill)
Last NYE was fun - stayed at the swish OMM hotel, ate at Tragaluz (which was MEGA expensive NYE) - nice place but not worth the €€€€€'s.
Great city though, so easy to navigate too with the streets been built on a grid system.

The nightlife in Barcelona when I've been has been nothing short of incredible, but then the only times I've been have been during the sonar festival so I might have a slightly warped view.

Baldrick..... the above are your words in English. I must commend your fantastic command of the English language when it comes to football.
Baldrick, I guess what I am trying to get at is, are you spanish?
Baldrick 01-09-2005, 21:44 Well, not exactly. i'm catalan. that doesn't mean that i'm not spanish. i'm spanish also. su i'm catalan and also spanish. do you remembre "Yes, Prime Minister"? So, it's the usual answer to the minister. "Yes and no". and u? where are u from?

I was in Barcelona for the first time last week! You live in an amazing city. I know some people in Sheffield who speak Catalan and have relatives in Catalunya, especially in Manresa. Sheffield has it's own Gegants that it was given by the people of Catalunya in the early 1990's: http://www.sheffieldcitygiants.co.uk/
If you like Pulp there are a lot of rock/indie nightclubs (Leadmill nightclub on a Saturday or Monday especially.) to choose from.
What exactly are you looking for to do?
Baldrick 01-09-2005, 21:55 I'll go there for the Sheffield Documentary Film Festival. Also to discover the city through the pulp lyrics and probably to some football game. recommend me all that you wnat or just write me!

 or :loopy: depending on whether you're serious or not.
(I'm 99.999999% certain you're being  but you never can be sure!)
Baldrick 06-09-2005, 18:04 what relation exist between robin hood and sheffield?
i don't know if it seems like Las Ramblas but i'll tell u when i come back. did you where in Marseille? La Cannebière it's similar to Las Ramblas. Not the ambience, but smells like that.
BoroughGal 06-09-2005, 18:27 I love Barcelona, Baldrick, I have a friend that lives in Horta.
Sheffield is far cheaper than Barca, and isn't as cosmopolitan (although it's getting more so). In general, we don't socialise in the same way, going out at 11pm and staying out while 5am (I know this is a stereotype, but in the main it's true).
The people are very friendly, and my catalunyan friend says that she can see the difference between northern and southern people, having worked in both places.
The drive from Robin Hood Airport to Sheffield takes around 40 minutes (when the roads aren't busy), it's a nice, easy drive on motorways.
Let us know if you need to meet some friendly faces when you get over here.
And as for Sheffield Chat - click on the link to the left hand side of this page - says * people in chat - join the chat room.

yeah the Ramblas was full of pound shops, chavs and smelt of rotting meat when i was there!
Baldrick 07-09-2005, 10:39 Yeah, Horta, Metro Line 5, blue. Ja, ja, ja :-)
I'm checking fly tickets, probably I'll buy it tomorrow. I've found cheap tickets flying to Blackpool, but that plane arrives late. Do you know how can arrive from Blackpool to Sheffield around 20.00?
I have:
1. - National Rail - via Manchester 20:52 - 23:43
2. - The National Express ("take the national express when your life is a mess..." the divine comedy) but it seems too long.
3.- Something else?
 zenkiu for helping
 come to barcelona
jdgraham83 07-09-2005, 10:57 Stay in blackpool and eat candy floss till your sick
Baldrick 07-09-2005, 13:57 Ok! Nice recommendation! I'll do it" And later? I mean, after the 2 weeks on the hospital?
BoroughGal 07-09-2005, 16:42 Is there an airport at Blackpool?

- sorry, it was all a joke, there's no airport, the ticket you bought it drives you to nowhere! JAJAJAJA!

GingerLiz 26-09-2005, 09:21 Hi Baldrick,
The full programme for the 12th Sheffield International Documentary Festival is now online at sidf.co.uk
It runs from 10th - 16th October this year with films screening all day every day. Tickets for the films cost £4 or £3.20. Film passes cost £32.00 (£25.60 concessions) and entitle holders to 10 film tickets (maximum two tickets per screening).
Industry sessions with Commissioning Editors etc debating topical media issues are open to Delegates only (delegate passes cost £195 + VAT which allows the holder entry to all screenings and sessions subject to availability).
The only industry sessions open to the public are:
The BBC Interview with BBC Director General Mark Thompson - £8
The Channel 4 Interview with Director Peter Kosminsky - £8
Newcomers Day - £19.00
The History Documentary - Bad Documentary? Worse History? - £8
There's one free screening which is "Afghantsi" on Sat 15th October.
It's a great opportunity to see some of the newest documentaries from around the world and if you're a filmmaker, a chance to meet some of the key industsry players.
Hope you can make it!
bigflesh 26-09-2005, 10:01 Your best bet is Jet2. They do direct flights from Barcelona to Leeds (Which is 1 Hour away from Sheffield).
Have a look at http://www.jet2.com

:wow: :hihi: :loopy: :shakes: Oh dear, oh dear... Sheffield's a lovely place to live (friendly people & Peak District on doorstep) but come on now - you can't be serious?!
Baldrick 27-09-2005, 12:02 Zenkiu for all the answers. I got a fly ticket via Liverpool, EasyJet. The chepaest, more than RyanAir. Jetu2 is too expensive if you fly from Spain, is cheap if you fly from the UK. Zenkiu all.
Now I'll check to sleep in some place. I've some kind of friends and I'm waiting some answer, but I'm not sure if i can sleep there.
I find all very expensive, and I've not arrived yet! The tickets for the festival are 6€ each movie. In Barcelona I can see today the last film of Gilliam for only 4€. Uau! it's supposed that a festival it's not a bussiness, it's to give the chance to the people to be near to the films. Well, I think so.
I hope my friends write me, if that answer never arrive I'll try to sleep under some bridge or maybe in a park. Well, the better place is in the police station but it's difficoult to sleep there 10 nights, I must open too much cars.
See u!!!

Hola Baldrick!
I have a link about the connection between Robin Hood and Sheffield on my website - which also has pages all about sheffield which might help you get familiar.
http://www.lucas-digital.com/sheffield/guide/sheffield_loxley.html
I'm off to Barcelona at the end of the month, we could have done a house swap ;-)
Over in Barc I'm staying in a student flat in Barceloneta, more expensive than any of the hostels, is still cheaper than a hotel. Here in Sheffield you might get accomodation through one of the two universities.
¡Buena suerte!
Baldrick 05-10-2005, 09:21 Hi Lucas
zenkiu for the info. I'm a little bit nervous 'cos i don't find any place to sleep for a good price. Only 1 "youth hostel", 12 miles from Sheffield, and absolutely a **** (closed from 23.00 to 8.00, closed from 10.00 to 17.00... what's that???)
I work in a YH in Barcelona, i could make a booking for you. U can sleep for 20€, and there are YH for 15€, maybe less. Opened 24h, free internet, 5 minutes from the center... a real youth hostel. But ok, if you are in a flat in Barceloneta i would be nice. Good luck!
I was checking through the universities but i don't know how it works. i will take a look again, but i'm not a student!
zenkiu!!!
Baldrick 05-10-2005, 09:53 Hi
first of all, congratulations for your webpage. it looks very nice, and very interesting. i'll read carefully.
a question: i don't understand how i can sleep through the university. do you know?
also, i've found a place called Archways, with 218 beds. there's for people who stays all the season studying but (maybe) there's some chance to stay there a few days? do you know something about them?
i'm starting to be disappointed before start the travel to sheffield. first time that happens in my life, i was in half europe (ceska, serbia, bosnia, greece, macedonia, kosovo, france, magyar, germany, portugal, italia... etc etc) and never had this bad feeling before start. i don't want to be in a hotel, i don't need all the things that an hotel offers and i cannot pay it. so, i feel like it was "impossible", and "odissey" to find a dirty ugly and cheap pansion on sheffield, usually the best place of a city.
ask me what you want about barcelona. it's my city. and (don't tell to the rest) but i'm the king of the city
see u!
neeeeeeeeeek 05-10-2005, 09:59 Have you sorted out somewhere to stay yet? what dates and how much were you prepaired to spend? My friend has a 2 bed flat and one person is moving out. he may be able to put you up but it would depend on dates etc. he lives in Meersbrook.
what was you
Baldrick 05-10-2005, 10:41 Hi neeeeeeeeeek
not yet. i've a friend checking for me somthing free, but i don't want to press her and her freinds. so, i would prefer to rent a room fro a week.
i will arrive on saturday 8 and leaving monday 17 morning (maybe sunday 16 afternoon). i don't know how much it cost to rent a room for weeks, i think maybe 60L would be ok?
where is meersbrook, please?
write me also at: waytonam@hotmail.com, we can meet in the msn right now if you want
zenkiu
lucasdigital 05-10-2005, 21:09 Hello Baldrick,
Thank you for your kind words about my website.
University connection -
As you can see, sheffield has no hostels, it has almost no boarding houses (we call them Bed & Breakfasts). There are many hotels - none are cheap.
The Ibis Sheffield is about the cheapest offering some rooms for about 60 euros per night.
The two universities assist in the housing of many thousands of students, there are thousands of houses that are always rented to students. It may be possible to arrange a short term agreement to stay in such a property.
http://www.accommodationforstudents.com/Sheffield.asp
I realise you are not a student - I am also not a student, but managed to get a room in the Residencia Campus del Mar - It looks great - but it cost more than twice as much as the Hostel Opera which was my first choice.
Meersbrook is about a mile from the city centre, close enough to walk to the centre in about 20 mins.
http://www.lucas-digital.com/sheffield/guide/sheffieldcitycentre.pdf
This map will help you - meersbrook is visible near the bottom of the city map.
Baldrick 06-10-2005, 09:21 i'm tired to look for a room for few days, nobody rents it. i'm arriving on satruday and i will do the next. i need your opinion:
i'll walk all the city with my bag, i'll search the poorest neighbourhood and there it must exist cheap ugly dirty pansions to stay. that exists in all the world, why not in sheffield? do you have immigrant people, like pakistan, chinese, marocco? where those people sleeps when they stay few days on the city? that will be my place.
zenkiu again for your help, neeeeeeeeek and specially lucas. enjoy your stay in barcelona, it's a nice city to visit, harder to live. yours
