View Full Version : What was the name of this fairground ride?
For the first time in 17 years, I went on the Waltzes - the last time was when I was a kid.
Anyhow, I then remembered another ride which I don't see anymore. I'm racking your brains again to see if you remember the what it was called?
It was a big, very fast roundabout with big 'sofas' not comfy ones, but more like pub seats, with 'motorbikes' dotted in between. Any ideas?:)
BoroughGal 31-08-2005, 17:16 "Speedway", I think you'll find....
Best ridden very cooly, with your back resting on one of the safety railings (not sat down, that's for wimps!), singing "Needle in a Haystack" and other trashy motown numbers....
Or is this just the way *I* remember things??!!
:o
Am I right in thinking it doesn't exist anymore?
bensonhedges 31-08-2005, 17:32 Try googling ("speedway"+"fairground") but without the brackets - there's loads of info. I love the fair - nearly ran away with them when I was about 12!

squeakyclean 02-09-2005, 21:08 Just the mention of the 'speedway' cracks me up as I once took my younger sister on it and she spent the entire ride clinging on for dear life ( I thought it was so funny) She didn't speak to me for days after that.

Speedway-very nostalgic. I used to love this ride. I remember me and 2 mates were leaning on the safety railings, one of my friends fell off, did a forward roll down the steps and amazingly survived it. :o

Can confirm that it was called the Speedway
Bushbaby 05-09-2005, 17:22 I was on The Speedway with a new girlfriend called Yvonne.
When they played "Leader of the Pack" she started crying and told me that it reminded her of her ex-boyfriend, Jimmy.
Did my confidence a world of good!!!
Does anyone remember yet another ride. It had about 6 cars like waltzer cars that were connected by a metal bar into the centre, and a pivot for the car itself, but it also had a footbrake. You slowed it down so it trailed and tried to force itself towards the centre, than let the brake off. It would shoot at an amazing G force and throw everybody in the car to one side, great for getting VERY close to some bird you fancied. I remember they used to have one when the funfare came to Oakes Park (along with Speedway and Waltzer but I've forgotten what they called it.
They would probably never get away with having them these days 'cos of Health + Safety (spoilsports!!!) You would probably need seatbelts, hard hat, the whole lot.......

There is one of these at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, looks about 100 years old and is never running when we go. It is called The Whip there. Hope this helps...
bensonhedges 12-09-2005, 20:48 Search ("The whip"+"fairground") on google (without brackets, obviously) - there's a fair bit about it and older rides in general.
the "speedway" always reminds me of the fairs at norfolk park we always used to go to em...... does anyone remember "nutty nigel" he always used to hang around the speedway following you around or trying to spit on you!!!:loopy:

In my childhood days this ride was called Noah's Ark or Farmyard. I am talking about the 1950's. Ling's feast had a brilliant one.

My father once worked for John Farrar. He drove a steam traction engine which in those days also drove several rides. Music in those days came from steam organs!

sadley most of the old rides like the whip harry lees steam yatchs
the cake walk the whales and a lot of sets of gallopers are now in america.
Remember the Caterpillar? A green canvas cover came over the carriage as you went around...............
Can anyone remember a fairground ride called the "Moon Rocket" it was like circular space rocket that spun round a circuit like orbiting the moon ..it was fitted with comfy seats ..and I remember "Popeye" sat on a small rocket orbiting the moon in the opposite direction in the middle of the ride..I remember this from a Fair in Concord Park in the 1940's...this was in the days when steam traction engines ran the generators for the rides..I can still remember the smell of coal and oil that came from these engines...Great Days when I was little...the Music then was bogie woogie stuff before Rock n roll was invented.

I remember this ride very very well. It was set at the same angle as a modern day sky TV dish. I loved it. Ling's Feast had one, and there was one at Belle Vue, Manchester.

The Whip was still in use at Mablethorpe five years ago, and I think there is one at Scarborough.
