View Full Version : Best place to buy cds in sheff
ReginaldD 31-08-2005, 13:49 Whenever I want to buy a new cd I always spend ages looking to see where it is the cheapest(normally fopp) but just wondered if anyone knew of any other good shops with a good selection. I went to Asda last week browsing when shopping, they seemed to have their cds really cheap but if you're looking for something specific it probably isn't the best place to go. I went to the Virgen megastore yesterday and saw that you can listen to any cd in the shop by scanning the barcode at a listening post. Which I thought was good as I normally end up not buying albums as I think I really like them but not sure as only a couple of songs on the albums get radio play.
Buying online is probably the cheapest.
www.play.com is pretty cheap, although can take a few days for delivery...
Fopp is pretty cheap, also have you tried Record Collector in Broomhill? Fulwood Road, I think, or Witham.
CD Wow (http://www.cdwow.com) is a good one - the CDs are shipped from Hong Kong but they're cheap, quick and reliable. And shipping is free.
There's always eBay - likely to be the cheapest - but it's quite a lot of messing: Is the CD in good nick? Has the seller got good feedback? Are they going to stiff you on shipping? Etc.

Agent Gypo 31-08-2005, 17:50 Depends what you're looking for. Fopp, HMV and Virgin if you want a broad selection, and their are loads of independents around Sheffield.
Buying online can be cheaper, but you can't beat browsing shops.
Cardinal 31-08-2005, 18:37 Buying online is generally cheaper but watch out for postage charges. I find Fopp and Music Zone (on the Moor) generally to be the best/cheapest in Sheff!!

i thought music zone on the moor had shut down months ago ? , for me the cheapest shop for cds has to be fopp but be careful what you buy as sometimes they mix the stock up by accident and put old cds in the remasterd cd cases
Cardinal 01-09-2005, 07:50 Nahh, Music Zone is still open and one of the few shops on the Moor which hasn't either shut or turned into a cheap [shoe] shop or frozen food shop!! ;)
For me, there is no one shop which is cheaper and it pays to shop around.
In terms of Fopp, although the old stuff which Fopp knock out for a fiver is the cheapest you'll probably find it, their prices sometimes for new CDs are certainly dearer than say Music Zone. And if you can save a couple of quid per album, you'll have soon enough money to buy another album!! ;)
FairyNormal 01-09-2005, 09:08 I use CD WOW for online buying and Music Zone for other bits and pieces. Music Zone is very good for buying non-chart stuff, if say, for example, you are replacing old vinyl onto CD. Most older stuff is around a fiver or sometimes less.
Music Zone or Fopp seem to do the job for me.
I can generally find the CD I'm looking for in either of those shops before turning to HMV or Virgin.
I only buy CDs from HMV in the sale.
the record collector in broomhill is my favourite

cheers for that info:thumbsup: im always going to the music zone in rotherham and they do have some really good offers on from time to time , ill prob get laughed at for this but sometimes woolworths and wh smiths can be good for bargains esp around sale time
if ya just after some specific songs, and dont wanna pay the price, just download them. via limewire or bit torrent. :-)

you bad boi:o :o :o
i can see your point tho sometimes if its somthing really rare you have no choice to go by that option
Got to agree with mbatey.
CD WOW are as far away as Hong Kong and yet for £8.99 in a lot of cases you can order them and they arrive about 5 days later with free postage and packing which I think is great .
Thats if you dont mind waiting to get the disc.
They also used to send me a 50p off voucher when I last bought some stuff off them which makes the next buy even cheaper. !!
Even if you order 3 or 4 dics all at the same time, they all get posted individually and arrive at your door, sometimes on a day after the other but in individually packed cardboard boxes.

Are they not? Shows how much attention I pay to the dears!:)
But fancy revealing the day, the place and now the section you'll be in... I suspect that despite all your denials, you may be a publicity-seeker after all!
Go on, admit it, you've secret plans to audition for Big Bro 7 in the near future... :D

Ah Ha!!
I can now say with confidence that the Record Collector 20% Sale is now on!
That's 20% off everything, all CDs and vinyl, including Chart CDs and those already in the 99p sale. The only exclusions are tickets and locally distributed (local, unsigned artists) CDs (as we make no profit on these). We're constantly putting out loads of ace new stuff, so come down and have a wee browse!
