View Full Version : Sheffield Hallam Studentent Union new building security
goldenfleece 31-08-2005, 11:37 Just an observation but this building seems to have no security at all. I wondered in on Saturday day time recently to find the place deserted, obviously no students about in the Summer, but seemingly no staff either! I only went in to have a lookat the new bar and venue as I was passing and it was just 5 minutes into opening time, and having walked in the main doors and into the foyer, I found my way to the main bar, which was empty, yet with all the bar shutters open and products available. One of the tills was wide open as well!!!! No staff! I waited for 3 minutes.....no staff appeared. I coughed loudly...no staff. Hearing the distant sound of a clanking metal bucket, I left the bar area.
Wondered out of the bar and upstairs into the skylight venue bit.....no staff......and in the corridors office doors were open. I wondered around the whole building and traced the metal clank to a cleaner on the other side of the building, and another staff member outside the back having a quick fag. They barely even noticed me or even apparently realized how insecure the venue was.
Come on SHU.......anyone could walk in there and nick all your bar stocks and PC's.....security is non existent.
The students union facilities are not actually open on a saturday, apart from to allow the cleaners to clean up, however, the main doors were probably unlocked in order to allow access to the radio station.

There are other precautions taken as to the security of stock and equipment (which I won't go into for obvious reasons), and almost every bar and pub across the country leaves their tills open when they have nothing in them... Saves people breaking them open for nothing.
Currently the only part of the building which opens for trade is the downstairs bar, which is open to everyone (not just students), on friday afternoon / evenings. Outside of this time, you'll do well to get served how ever loud you cough!
goldenfleece 31-08-2005, 13:54 I see.....the bar area had an OPEN sign on it though, and all the lights were on, so it looked as if it had just opened.
Did not notice any money in the tills, just observed they were open.......my point remains though, a very quick person could have been up and over the bar front and walked out clanking with bottles of spirits.......
dosxuk, rather than defend the 'apparantly lacking' security, i'd be thanking goldenfleece for being so honest and for alerting someone to the obvious hole in the security system.
Well done Goldenfleece - nice to see some honest public spirited people about
ormester 31-08-2005, 21:04 quite suprised golden fleece you actually posted this on here i will not going in to details as people will know who iam but always ask people what are they doing when i work. i personallyif i were you i would have called in there and raised youre point they are a friendly bunch of people . The problem as dsox put is the building is open for the radio station but the phoenix bar would be locked usually b and a pod will be locked too and fridges on the bars are also locked it is difficult to get away with anything as there aree cameras everywhere .

Did he alert someone? Or did he just post it on a public forum for every Thomas, Richard and Harold to read about it?

Personally, if I had some concerns about the security somewhere, I'd take that up with the particular place, not as sniperwookie says, on a public forum for every Thomas, Richard and Harold to read about it?
