does anyone know why some bus lanes are marked out for motorcycles and others aren't?
the road signs on abbeydale road clearly show that motorcycles are permiited, but that doesn't appear to be the case on all bus lanes, for example queens road.
anyone know why?

they originally were just testing the motorcycles in bus lane scheme on that stretch of road.
Does that mean they decided against it? if so, does anyone know why?

i heard they had decided to do it but there wasnt space on the signs to stick a motorbike so would have to make new signs, not sure if thats true.

Motorbikes cruise into Sheffield bus lane
Motorbikes, mopeds and scooters are travelling in the bus lane along one major route into Sheffield, as part of a year-long trial aimed at reducing congestion and road accidents.
Since Monday 12 May, powered two-wheelers have been using the A621 ‘Abbeydale Road Corridor’ following the results of a survey by Sheffield City Council of around 450 riders. Most motorcyclists responded by saying that allowing them to travel in bus lanes would make the greatest difference to their journeys.
Sheffield City Council is among a number of local authorities allowing motorcyclists to use bus lanes, a measure which is consistently resulting in fewer accidents for riders.
Terry Fox, Cabinet Adviser for Transport, said: “This scheme will benefit all road users by reducing congestion and the number of road accidents.
“Given that motorcyclists make up less than one per cent of road traffic but suffer 14 per cent of all deaths and serious injuries as a result of road accidents, any measure that promotes their safety should be given serious consideration.
“We will be monitoring the pilot scheme carefully with a view to expanding it to other bus lanes across the city if successful. We ask motorcyclists who take advantage of this scheme to ride in a considerate and safe manner because ultimately, the expansion of this scheme will depend on them.”
Motorcyclists should note that, under the pilot scheme, they can only use the bus lanes on the A621 and riding in any other Sheffield bus lane remains an offence.
I use them on my bike should I need to.
Took my test in North London and was there trained to move if I have space.
I never prohit the travel of a bus, so I see no real problem.
Say what you like about that car drivers, but at least I mirror, signal, manouvre when I am supposed to :suspect:

I use the one on Abbeydale road in the evenings on the way home from work. You still have to need your wits about you though due to the parked cars on some bits, although it means I can get home in about 5 minutes.
I can't wait for the one on Chesterfield road to be upgraded too.
I would say from years of experience on motorbikes, it is a little strange riding at that side of the traffic though. Most of the time it's safer and more natural to ride toward the centre of the road, as there is more chance to get out of danger. And car drivers are more likely to notice you. Even worse these days when 40% of them seem to be concentrating on their mobile phone conversation, rather than their safe driving and lane discipline.
