Maybe the forum can help with this - If I want to tow a large trailer (a vehicle trailer) I dont think my current licence allows me to do this.
I passed my driving test in 2000, so the below applies to me:

Drivers who passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 are required to pass an additional driving test in order to gain entitlement to category B+E and all larger vehicles.

That's basically saying I need to pass a further test to gain entitlement to tow a trailer.
Any ideas how I go about this?

Calling Saxon?? ;)

a vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.25 tonnes could be driven by the holder of a category B entitlement. This is because the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and also the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle.

From what I see you are ok up to 3.5 tonnes anything over that then you need to take further tests.

just agree with tango.
u dont need fruther testing to lawfully tow a trailer/caravan or horsebox.

Yes I think the extra licence catagories are for lorry type vehicles. You can tow things including other cars, and if you are on a motorbike, you can tow a motorbike trailer or a broken down motorbike, but that particular operation is extremely difficult, and you have to go very carefully and slow as a crawl.

I dont think it specifies any class of vehicle, just weights.

and also the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle.

Unfortunately it probably will.

The above posters are in the main correct in that if the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM and the trailer is not heavier than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, then you don't need the extra category on your licence.

However, if you are planning to tow another vehicle on the trailer, that will more than likely cause the loaded trailer weight to exceed the weight of the towing vehicle and therefore the extra category (B+E) will be required, even if the total weight is within 3.5 tonnes.

Also, in response to Willman, I think you'll find that most horseboxes have a MAM in excess of most (although not all) towing vehicles and B+E will be required.
