Just watching the news now MTheo ... it's New Orleans, Louisiana, Kentucky, Alabama. Missisippi and on into Tennessee and all down that coast.

It's total devastation for those poor people :(. Looking at the damage, it's hard to see where you would even start to clear up ...

Sincerely hope your sister doesn't live anywhere near the area where Hurricane Katrina has passed by.

Looks like it is getting worse. The levee's that protect the city have sprung leaks and the water is still rising.

They are saying it could be a month before people are allowed to return home.

Also if my home had been under water, contaminated water, i would also steal food that would go to waste anyway, to feed my family.

back2basics. it did look like they were taking food supplies from shops and as long as they were intending to share them with others fair enough - but not to sell em on or keep it all for themselves, that really would be sick in the circumstances :(

The News at 10 said the dykes had burst and the underground pumps were failing - so not good news for New Orleans in the end.

They have looted mainly jewellery stores and sporting goods stores that sell guns. The looters are now armed and dangerous. The police and national guard have a major problem.

Hey Mods,, you should merge this thread with the "Hurricane in US" thread.

Hurricane Katrina first hit south Florida last Friday. It killed 5 people. Florida is a magnet for hurricanes.

Look out Texas. We all thought Katrina was a storm to top all storms. Well Rita will cause the next natural disaster. The oil rigs in the Gulf will be slammed. Rita is at 165 mph. A catagory 5 which is the strongest on record. Texans are under a mandatory evacuation along the coast. Keep watching the news cos it is predicted to be a bad one.

What is it with USA and all these natural disasters? Seems like theres always something going on over there.

It has a lot to do with size. Where you live in a small geographical location, the weather tends to be similar all over the country. In the US you have a climate range that goes from tropical to arctic. On top of which you have the gulf of Mexico which spurns hurricanes off shore, the unstable geology of the West creating earth quakes, blizzards in the Northeast, amd last but not least tornado country in the midwest.
All of these things happen randomly, a hurricane here, a tornado there. So it seems to be constant, but regionally its not.
We haven't had a real good downeast blizzard in these parts for some time now, and its been years since San Francisco got a good tremor.

We've already seen the petrol go up again today. It went down now it's back up. Plus long queues to fill up. If the oil rigs are damaged then oil prices will rise even more than after Katrina. People are panicking as we have been told that the price will probably double and go up to $5.00 a gallon. What about you Buck, have you noticed any changes in Conneticut? Do you have any natural disasters up there. Maybe we should move up north! Mr. Funke's mum and dad want us to move to North Carolina with them but they just got hit too by hurricane Ophelia.

I heard that Californians are seriously looking at their disaster plans and preparing for a big quake. I went to LA once and that thought freaked me out. Their roads are all cracked up and broken. I asked about that thinking that they should pay more road tax to get them fixed. I was told that it was caused by the tremors and mild earthquakes that are a common occurance. I was there a week and didn't feel any. Phew!

We've had a few hurricanes come up from the gulf, and there have been some deaths, but few and far between.
Snow is a much bigger hazard in New England, and though we're the most southern NE state we still get hit. In 1978 Governor Ella Grasso shut down the state for a week following a January blizzard of massive proportions. I managed to sneak into Massachusetts using back roads to get to a job I needed to do, without getting caught. I had to stay there and live in a motel till she opened the state up again.

It sounds like it's going to be pretty bad again - Galvaston has been evacuated... Lets hope the vast majority of people are out of there by the time the hurricane hits...

Got to say though, I know the hurricane season has been quite severe this year but surely as it happens every year it seems that many people are not as prepared as I thought they would be?

It's the poorer people and the homeless that I really feel sorry for, they have very little to start off with and to lose what little they have must be so awful. It's difficult for some people to understand - America is a rich and powerful country yet there are big differences between those that have plenty and those that have nothing... It's brought attention to the world that one can live in the richest country in the world and still be in extreme poverty, maybe that's a good thing? Raising awareness? I don't know.

I feel awfully sorry for the elderly and the little ones, i noticed the women holding onto their little ones in Orleans but didn't see any fathers around..... also Ritas traffic back up just caused the deaths of around 25 elderly on a bus that caught a spark and the oxygen tanks caused an explosion.
