View Full Version : Have you ever bought "The Big Issue"?
pattricia 30-08-2005, 21:09 I have never bought "THe Big Issue".Someone says its £1 to buy,is that true ? The reason I havent bought one is because I once heard one Big Issue seller saying to another one, "What are you on now ?" The other seller said " Im on Methadone Now " I must say though that I have always found the sellers very polite, and they dont bother you if you dont want to buy.

if they are on methadone means they are trying to get off it..
the sellers have to be polite as you can report them and they will have thier badge taken off them... i used to buy it but stopped a long time ago as it just not a good ready anymore
noseyrosie 30-08-2005, 21:20 I buy it every week. It's £1.20 now btw.
It's not a hefty read but it's always got some good interviews and from an unusual stance. Film reviews are always worth looking at too, and the news section shows some unusual stories you might not hear about otherwise.
It makes their day to sell them, it's a bit of a boring job to be honest. Think about it, it's less than most bus fares and about half the price of a town centre cup of coffee.

I also used to buy it weekly and it used to be a good read. pretty pants now.
I once gave the guy outside Spar on Eccy Road £2 and didn't take a copy off him - not just because I was feeling friendly but co's it's such a crap read.
roughy101 30-08-2005, 21:41 i used to buy the big issue from a lady called pippa outside the precinct in hillsborough, i used to give her a couple of pounds every saturday and give her the magazine back to sell to someone else,i saw her walking miles rather than catch the bus/tram.she was so frail,i didnt see her for some weeks and asked another seller where she was and he said she had died,i dont know how why or where, i just know that everytime i saw her i felt a real sadness, there but for the grace of god go us:cry:

Wow! thats given me a lump in the throat mate. I hate to see old people on their own or in need. Poor lady, may she rest in peace.

...would that be because tramps, even after a bottle of turps, have a greater intellect than you and don't need pictures to visualise a story?
I bought it once and then vomited.
So never bothered again ;)
sugarnspice 30-08-2005, 22:47 I bought it once because my boyfriend was in it but that's it. Though I find the sellers to be very polite.
pattricia 30-08-2005, 22:49 Gosh,I used to see that lady selling them outside the precinct. She looked so thin and frail, I had wondered what had happenend to her. Im not surprised she died.

Close - the actual quote is "The Big Issue is like Bunty written by tramps".
It was said by Pauline from The League Of Gentlemen
I never seem to have any money on me but I always feel guilty as hell when I don't. At least the homeless people are trying to make money selling Big Issue and not sat outside the Cathedral asking for bus money and drinking white lightening!
ReginaldD 01-09-2005, 19:05 My mum sonetimes buys it thats the only time I read it, there does'nt seem to be much in it, to many jobs. If I wanted something to read I could buy the times and the independent for less than a big issue. Although I can see the point in buying it.
I buy it, but the magazine has really gone down hill over the last couple of years. Now I buy it but often don't bother reading it. They need to sort the content of the magazine out, I think.
banesmabes 01-09-2005, 19:29 I have bought it from time to time, mainly because of the cause rather than it being a good read (which it isn't). It usually gets thrown on the coffee table unread and then thrown out a week later.
