View Full Version : Best disaster movie ever!!!! crowefan 30-08-2005, 18:10 so what is the best disaster movie ever??????????? crowefan 30-08-2005, 18:16 add any more that you may deem fit!!! include any tv films or "disaster"themed films such as Independence day or even Lost on tv!!!!!!! surprise me the_rudeboy 30-08-2005, 18:37 No Titanic?...... teebee 30-08-2005, 19:00 I thought that Titanic was a "disastrous" movie, not a disaster movie. Lestat 30-08-2005, 19:24 I'd have voted for Titanic. Independence Day!? . . what a crock of Americanised 'We are the heroes of the world' Sh*t! .... the little part the Brits played in it was to show them drinking tea at an RAF base. :gag: venger 30-08-2005, 19:25 Is there such a thing, if there is I would have to go for 'Painful Deceptions' Agent Gypo 30-08-2005, 19:26 All the films in the list are poor, disaster movies are something that hollywood consistently manages to make a real hash of. Kristian 30-08-2005, 19:26 I really enjoyed The Day After Tomorrow. I thought the effects were amazing! :wow: K x crowefan 30-08-2005, 20:26 disaster films are by definition generally NOT works of art, they are in movie terms often a reaction to social and economic unrest.they were very popular in the 1930's during the depression, with films such as THE RAINS CAME,SAN FRANCISCO,IN OLD CHICAGO AND THE HURRICAINE etc The disaster films of the seventies were well known for cardboard characters, all star epics which the audience didnt have to think very hard at. They have a formula which any kid enjoys brave hero plucky heroine old lady who usually dies small children and willowly woman who needs saving sudden romance in disaster senario.. good effects easy on the eye  Deavon 30-08-2005, 20:31 Originally posted by crowefan ...They have a formula which any kid enjoys brave hero plucky heroine old lady who usually dies small children and willowly woman who needs saving sudden romance in disaster senario.. good effects easy on the eye Don't forget, the 'flashback' sequence as they are all trapped waiting for rescue Also The morality lesson: Bad people usually meet a grissly end and of course The white vest that gets very dirty JoeP 30-08-2005, 20:38 I have a soft spot for 'The Towering Inferno'. But I would probably say that for it's time 'On The Beach' must have had quite an impact. I saw it recently and it was very scarey. Fred Astaire featured in both. If I ever find myself in a tall building with a bloke that looks like Bruce Willis or someone who looks like Fred Astaire, then I am out of there. Joe crowefan 30-08-2005, 20:43 good point joe but be very carefull if you see two nuns on a plane..........................that really means that you are in trouble StarSparkle 30-08-2005, 20:48 Originally posted by crowefan good point joe but be very carefull if you see two nuns on a plane..........................that really means that you are in trouble ..... especially if one of them has a guitar.... :suspect: StarSparkle Lestat 30-08-2005, 20:50 What about 'War of the worlds ?' Jagshemash. JoeP 30-08-2005, 20:58 Originally posted by Lestat What about 'War of the worlds ?' Jagshemash. Which version? I assume the Tom Cruise one, which I haven't seen yet. I did enjoy the 1950s one - I think it set my view of alien invasions for years! I saw the Poseidon Adventure two days before I was due to go on a ship for the first time. I'm really scared of drowning - the bits where they had to go under water freaked me out big time! I remember seeing one of the first 'Airport' type movies where the pilot and crew get food poisoning - I think it was the basis for 'Airplane'. And there was another one called 'No Highway' where a plane designer realises that the plane he's on is likely to fall apart due to catastrophic metal fatigue... :) Joe crowefan 30-08-2005, 23:42 good point/ war of the worlds has all the elements of a good disaster film.... not enough characters though.... :gag: |
