I thought that Titanic was a "disastrous" movie, not a disaster movie.

I'd have voted for Titanic.

Independence Day!? . . what a crock of Americanised 'We are the heroes of the world' Sh*t! .... the little part the Brits played in it was to show them drinking tea at an RAF base. :gag:

Is there such a thing, if there is I would have to go for 'Painful Deceptions'

All the films in the list are poor, disaster movies are something that hollywood consistently manages to make a real hash of.

I really enjoyed The Day After Tomorrow. I thought the effects were amazing! :wow:

disaster films are by definition generally NOT works of art, they are in movie terms often a reaction to social and economic unrest.they were very popular in the 1930's during the depression, with films such as THE RAINS CAME,SAN FRANCISCO,IN OLD CHICAGO AND THE HURRICAINE etc

The disaster films of the seventies were well known for cardboard characters, all star epics which the audience didnt have to think very hard at. They have a formula which any kid enjoys

brave hero
plucky heroine
old lady who usually dies
small children and willowly woman who needs saving
sudden romance in disaster senario..
good effects
easy on the eye

Don't forget,
the 'flashback' sequence as they are all trapped waiting for rescue
Also
The morality lesson: Bad people usually meet a grissly end
and of course
The white vest that gets very dirty

I have a soft spot for 'The Towering Inferno'.

But I would probably say that for it's time 'On The Beach' must have had quite an impact. I saw it recently and it was very scarey.

Fred Astaire featured in both. If I ever find myself in a tall building with a bloke that looks like Bruce Willis or someone who looks like Fred Astaire, then I am out of there.

Which version? I assume the Tom Cruise one, which I haven't seen yet. I did enjoy the 1950s one - I think it set my view of alien invasions for years!

I saw the Poseidon Adventure two days before I was due to go on a ship for the first time. I'm really scared of drowning - the bits where they had to go under water freaked me out big time!

I remember seeing one of the first 'Airport' type movies where the pilot and crew get food poisoning - I think it was the basis for 'Airplane'. And there was another one called 'No Highway' where a plane designer realises that the plane he's on is likely to fall apart due to catastrophic metal fatigue... :)
