It wasn't knocked down, it got burned down last week. There was a small piece in the paper about it, accidental fire apparently.

Accidental my @r5e

It's funny how old cinemas and formerly important and interesting builings conveniently burn down in this city.

I know of two other examples but I am not naming them here.

Probably get the insurance money, then sell the lans for more student flats or another bar, etc. £Caching£

Whatever they decide to do with it, they'll be keeping the old frontage (apparently). The fire brigade went out of their way to save it.

I thought the frontage was coming down anyway as it wasn't listed

I wouldn't get too excited thinking that it was a deliberate fire set by developers.

Permission is in place to demolish it anyway. Hardly worth going to jail for eh?

Hmm. I've lived in Sheffield five years now and have never been to Bed. Guess I never will now. Shame:hihi:

I think its a shame.. just up the road they're saving the lovely Abbeydale picture house and BED was a lovely old building too but its ok to knock it down.. don't get it.

They better put something nice there and not just some more soul less boring blue/orange coloured flats... can't architects do anything different these days.. all our buildings look the same!

Slightly different cases Anne,
The Abbeydale is a listed building, and has lots, and is completely full, of original features. The Locarno was a shell which had been used for everything from a supermarket, to a live band venue, top of the pops, a ballroom and a nightclub. It was just an empty shed with an interesting frontage, on the London road end and was of a much poorer, smaller and less grand construction.

I wasn't sure where you were talking about but with the references to black paint and Abbeydale Picture Palace I've figured it out.
You're talking about Tiffany's
The building has never been a gem but it did look a hell of a lot better before the black paint job.

I think is absolutly ridiculous that the massive ugly flats that dominate the city sky line have a preservation order on them yet a beautifal building like bed doesn't- strip off that black paint and it will look amazing, they should have made them incorporate it into the student flats there!!

My thoughts exactly! I am surprised, though; really thought it would have been protected, being old and pretty cool too.

I tried to get into Bed on 2 occasions while with a large group of friends who had come to visit the city. The first time we were refused entry because someone had trainers on.
The second time some of the group has fancy dress on and were refused.
Before that when it was The music factory, my cousin was refused entry because he had the wrong jeans on..

they can knock it down for all I care, If I can't go in..

I had heard that they were keeping Bed as the enterance to the complex of flats and that they were putting a gym and other facilities in it for the students.

Theres too many flats being built in Sheffield and too many good buildings being destroyed. Im dealing with a property agent in Leeds at the moment and there is now a glut of flats in Leeds which nobody wants seeing as Leeds did what Sheffield is now doing a few years ago. Long term its got to effect houseprices as there are only so many people prepaired to live in the city.

When I went past yesterday it looked like they were only demolishing the "shed" shaped bit at the back, the main entrance (the interesting bit) was still standing.

I was under the impression the flats on London Road were for students, which there will never be a shortage of :)

I used to quite like Skool Disko at BED during my days at university here in Sheffield [I went dressed as a public school boy]. Although it was always rammed to bursting point the atmosphere and music was good. However, it was always rather warm in BED and light relief could only be found in the air-conditioned VIP room.

Shame it's gone really though I can't seem me wanting to go in there these days.

I know the insides weren't up to much but I'm suprised if they're allowed to knock the frontage down.. I actually much prefer the shape of the front of Bed to the front of the abbeydale picture house (though inside that is obviously much more worthy of saving)..
