Wanted specifications for a good TFT/LCD monitor

My 17 inch CTR monitor is almost at the point of needing replacing. Just in case it packs up working and I can't get back on line I would like to have the following information on TFT/LCD monitors in hand so that I can refer to it when the time comes.

My computers operating system is Windows98se

I would be able to afford around £200 Although I have no make of monitor in mind I would be interested in what make you would recommend. Most importantly I would like to know the technical specifications I should look for to get clear, sharp, easy to read web pages. I have got my eyes on this one

I'm not clued up on what's currently best on the market, but one piece of advice I can offer is to never buy a monitor "blind". You spend a lot of time staring at it - always try and see the models you're interested in actually in use in similar lighting conditions to yours i.e. flourescent lighting/near a window etc. Or buy from a place that'll do a no-quibble exchange if you find you don't like it.

LG TFT's are bloody good, dont just plump for the biggest tho, because to get a quality 19" screen requires quite a bit of wonga. 17" screens have about the same viewable area as a 19" CRT.

I'd go for a 17" monitor.

19" are all well and good but you sometimes need to have the resolution really ramped up and for some it can be a bit much. With a 17" you will find 1024*768 perfect.

We tend to buy a lot of TFTs (replacing 600 CRTs throughout a school) and find Benq monitors good quality and value:

The best ones at the moment are Sharp or Viewsonic.
