Has any one else seen the statue of a steel man on the sheffiedl parkway? It is very obscure but quiet noticable once it has been pointed out . If you are driving towards town it is on the left hand side just before the turnofff for handsworth and Asda.
Does anyone know why it was put there and when?

I've seen it, it's been there quite a while now .... bloomin scarey the first time you see it to be honest! Much more visible in the winter months when there's less foliage around to conceal it.

A photo should be appearing here shortly, courtesy of csi_bha.

There are also some large concrete feet further along towards the services at POW road......but not as impressive.

They're re-building the Parkway - AGAIN? Will it ever be finished?

From Handsworth to POW Rd junction, including Mosborough Parkway as far as Richmond Rd bridge. Not exactly sure why but i think it's due to the failure of the existing carriageway sub-structure, which was built around 1990.

I think its partly that ASDA are building their own parkway exit/entrance...

The new ASDA entrance or the Parkway?

Both :)

The Parkway won't look any different, the layout remains the same.....it's only a reconstructive maintenance scheme cos the existing carriageway is 'failing' (you may have noticed how bumpy that section is now)
The only difference you will notice is that the 'normal' street lighting, currently down the central reserve, will be replaced by a 'high mast' scheme.

Not sure if there's a layout available for the ASDA scheme. There may be something on the Council website under planning applications.

ahhh right...

just at the mo on that exit, the steel structure asda are putting in place looks like the exit will be at the same point as the handsworth junction... not a good idea i would have thought :S

The new entrance will be off the 'into town' sliproad (no exit out of ASDA at this location tho.)

Think he was put in when the Mosborough Parkway junction was built circa 1990. He's a steelworker.

Been there 15 years!?

Bloomin eck, I've been travelling up and down the Parkway for over 12 years and the first time I saw it was about 2-3 years ago.

:wow: Obviously been concentrating on the road!

Hmm, he's only been put there recently, surely....... :suspect:

He scares me. Especially when someone paints his eyes white. But then he becomes amusing AND scary, if possible.......

Was only guessing when i suggested he might have been put there as part of the Mosb Pway junction in 1990ish.

Lol! Only noticed this for the first time on Tuesday night and I must come down the parkway at least once a week! To be fair i was a passenger Tues not a driver and a mate pointed him out to me otherwise i'd still be none the wiser.
If you were on your own and noticed it at a glance, it's pretty unnerving - man with great big sledge hammer in dim lighting - :suspect:

He's not that obvious though is he? I think he's meant to be a bit hidden away.

SpeedwayDan
21-12-2006, 11:37
yeah he was pointed out to me last year, i'd never noticed him before, if you're going towards town, he's just after the handsworth turn off, not before as someone stated

The figure you are talking about has been there a few years now, one time someone painted the eyes with glow in the dark paint, it looked fantastic. It didnt do any harm to the figure they only did the eyes but the effect was wicked haha

i believe a grant was obtained for work to be done in bowden woods a couple of years ago and the steel man was built and put there through these funds. he's probably metal and scary so nobody sets fire to him which you'll come to understand on walking through these woods, as wonderful as they are to walk through.

How have I missed this?!!

Squaffy
15-02-2007, 18:41
He is easy to miss but once youve seen him you tend to look every time you pass. I came across him many years ago when my kids and I had to cross the bridge. As we neared the top of the footpath my daughter dropped her ball which rolled down the hill and onto the public footpath just by the side of our fella. I near on crapped meself as I emerged through the bushes to find him hovering over me!! :o
