View Full Version : Help needed buying a laptop this week
Classic Rock 30-08-2005, 11:32 I'm new to the minefield of laptops but figure it would be good to get one to run my discos through. The question is...where to start?
It needs to have a pretty large Hard Drive so I can store the music on it.
It needs to only really run one or two programs, but needs enough memory so if I run a search it's not going to slow down the music that's playing and can find the file quickly.
I've had a look at Dell's site and found an Intel Celeron 36, 512 MB memory, 80 GB HDD and a 24 x CDRW/DVD. Thing is that once you add on all the VAT and delivery it takes it to well over £700.
I looked at Ebuyer but nothing seemed to jump out there.
I need this up and running by Saturday night so if you know of a good deal or can help, please get in touch.
alchresearch 30-08-2005, 12:04 I would choose HP.
I took a look at Comet's site and this seems ok:

RazorSHarp 30-08-2005, 12:23 Have a look through the laptops on this link. they are all in stock and are new.
You might also want to look into using a portable storage device for storing all your tracks on as well.

neeeeeeeeeek 30-08-2005, 12:25 SO how much do you want to spend?
sounds like you basically need a budget laptop, but with a lot of storage.
Have you considered going for a budget laptop (with budget storage) and getting some sort of external drive for storage, thus allowing you to carry your music around in a much smaller package and allowing you to put it safe somewhere when not in use.
Any modern laptop will be able to do a search whilst playing an mp3, it takes very little cpu now.
mattio111 30-08-2005, 13:31 buy a nice shiny laptop.
Classic Rock 30-08-2005, 13:41 Well, I guess I'm pretty naiive. I'd hoped to have spent around £500.
I have an external HDD, but want to cut down on the amount of stuff I carry about, plus at times I run two discos at the same time, so want it all loaded onto the HDD.
To get a Dell laptop £449 for Follow this link to Dell

Than change the support service to 90 day collect & return which subtracts £35.25.
The spec is as follows:
Intel® Celeron® M Processor 360 (1.4 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 400 MHz FSB)

8-cell NiMH Battery
DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
Microsoft® Works 7.0
RazorSHarp 30-08-2005, 13:47 If you buy cheap you'll regret it later, spend that bit extra and you'll be happier in the long run.
Classic Rock 30-08-2005, 14:11 So what do you recommend I should spend? I really want capacity for storage more than anything and secondary to that needs to be performance.

Sounds good, apart from the HDD being too small. The link unfortunately is dead.
oops, the link is now edited. My apologies.
I got THIS (http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/Acer_Travelmate_4150LCi_LX.T7606.018/version-3.asp) from Staples 2 weeks ago for £550. It came with a 60GB HD as well.
That offer isn't on now but they might have something similar on
Hi there,
here's my thoughts for what they're worth
In my last 2 postions, I only ever rolled out HP/Compaq laptops to users. In my last job, we rolled out 110 and had just 1 faulty laptop!
If you've got any links to the trade, try and find out what models HP have special pricing on this month. If not try dealtime..I just did a look and chose these:
I would go for one of these:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=93587&_LOC=UK
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=93587&_LOC=UK
However I prefer intel so would probably pick this:

Hope this helps
