View Full Version : Broken Beats in Sheffield
Hey Everyone,
I went down to Notting Hill Carnival on the weekend to stand in awe at the Good Intentions Co-Op sound-system. Seiji, Afronaught, other BITAs and J Da Flex were all playing..
But alas I didnt make it further than the Channel One soundsystem and the countless chicken roasts going on.
I've come back to Sheffield NEEDING some broken beats . . what, where is going on? I know Phonetics do their thing - where else?
Any ideas mean big smiles.
markichamp 30-08-2005, 15:57 Always throw a load of beats down on a Friday at the Lounge. Along with a load of allsorts of other stuff. Glorious!!!

welchiewelch 31-08-2005, 13:42 Yep I walked around and couldn't find the sound...went to co-op sunday night for some broken fixations.....hot !!!....literally.
As for broken beats come and check us (PHONETICS) at SCUBA this saturday - we've got plenty of broken tackle to lay at your feet...
Welchie.. was it at Plastic People??
Hmm.. we went to One Nation @ Brixton Academy. Waited in the queue for an hour and an 'alf while cheeky cockneys pushed in. Then the sound was rubbish! Moan moan. Moan I did, loads. Should have been where you were!
Will be checking Phonetics, its been a month or two for me!
welchiewelch 01-09-2005, 13:35 Yep it was at plastic people. Was rammed and is only a small place but there was daz i kue from Bugz in the attic and ig culture at the controls. And it went off. Not gloating or owt.
Going out in London can be a lottery tho'. I've lost count of the amount of times i've paid thru the nose for something mediocre.
Just heard Daz - I - Kue's new record (Move), up down all around bassline woo woo
welchiewelch 07-09-2005, 12:31 It's one bad mutha hip house kinda ******* init !!!!
He played this new one at co-op which was the ruffest most simplistic bit of broken beat i've heard in ages. Devastating...
BRINGITON 09-09-2005, 09:36 I love that Daz-I-Kue tune, it's ruff as!
Isn't Benji B from Radio 1Extra doing that night with Pete Tong at Plug? Never heard his show but he's meant to be a man of broken beats, the tracklistings of his show look good. I can't imagine they'd have him in the same room as Tong though, proper clash in styles!
Wow.. hadnt heard about that - but my laard, that surely would clash like you wouldnt believe.
Totally love Benji.. but even he seems to play the more soulful/slower side of broken beats, how will that go with Pete Tong? The only thing I can imagine is that it'll be a big BBC do..
Well worth checking out Benji on the radio if you get chance! The best show on 1Xtra was J Da Flex who played all sorts like broken beats, broken garage, dubby dubstep, all really good stuff, but they canned his show! I still cant believe it :(
Bully_Beef 09-09-2005, 09:48 I can't believe they binned J DA either! He was the baddest thing on 1xtra, the only guy keeping up the links between all the different styles spawned from the Garage scene.
Naughty naughty 1xtra:gag:
BRINGITON 09-09-2005, 10:35 I'm gonna check him out then, deffo must be in a different room to Tong though. The ad's in the back of Exposed, they got Jeff Mills on soon too - I can't stomach techno but the man got skills!
Bully_Beef 09-09-2005, 10:40 Yurr, just seen the Plug website.... Benji is in the second room with the 'Tonic' geezers. Tong is cranking out the FM house in the main room. Got to love "Tongie", though....
BRINGITON 09-09-2005, 10:47 What's the date Bully? Need to pencil that one in fo' sho.
Bully! Got your CD man.. Amazing!! Cheers muchly, will be in touch about putting them pon the iffy.. Thanks again m'man.
Jeff Mills?!?
Oh man, I grew up with that CD of him at the Liquid Rooms in Tokyo, i'd go and see him purely incase he played some of the oldies!
Everyone go to http://dubstep.blogspot.com/ to download J Da Flex radio shows in glorious MP3!!
edit: sorry about the amount of !!!s, I just a bit excited today.
Bully_Beef 09-09-2005, 11:06 BRINGITON: 14th October mate (check this (http://www.the-plug.com) ).
Might hot-step it down there me sen.
I see Danny Mager is going to be resident down there too... he's a bad man! :D
Iffy: glad you liked it man!
I can also recommend www.blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com for loads more dubstep and grime mixes from Hatcha, Plasticman, Kode9 and all those grimey chaps...
welchiewelch 09-09-2005, 12:00 Be funny to see Benji B back to back with Pete Tong. Can't knock the tong tho'....in his time he's broke a lot of acts and was one of the original jazz funk/soul Djs !!. Does play a load of ****e now tho. (contradiction spotters)
Iffy - u get them Cds - hope so cos if not that's my nan's WH Smith's vouchers and them cds have gone missing and that's exceptional thievery even by Royal Mail standards.
welchiewelch 09-09-2005, 12:08 Danny Mager is a bad man. He tortures small woodland creatures, eats domestic pets and enjoys putting ground up old ladies fingernails into guests' cups of tea.
Benji B - we had him play twice at phonetics...does play the more soulful broken stuff and deep housey style stuff with a bit of nu-soul thrown in. Worth checkin.
I too preferred Jay Da Flex's show. Love a lorra broken but like the iffy one prefer the heavier stuff.....
Someone has gotten in touch with me about a night they do at The Earl called Aromatiq - Broken Beat, Deep House, Dubstep, sounds like the kind of house party I'd like to dance the funky charleston at.
Breakbear 09-09-2005, 20:14 There's bits going on at The Tuesday Club. Bugz played last year and you can expect smatterings of broken in the future.
Da man like dem Stoat man dem man man Ali H is always dropping tasty chunks of brukbeat (as Welchie used to call it) dubstep, hiptronica and other nice things in his almost weekly appearances.
For those who like it a little bit darker on the dubstep side of things, heard a rumour that Vex'd would be at a forthcoming C90. That promises to be tasty.
Its a shocker eh, VEX'd are definately playing C90. Its like Christmas come early for me. :)
Bully_Beef 10-09-2005, 02:34 Whuuuuuuuuuttt???
Vex'd coming to Sheff! I'll be there with nuts on...
welchiewelch 12-09-2005, 12:27 Never heard of Vex'd....does that mean i'm a clueless halfwit ? Can you enlighten me ?
As for Ali H. He's not a bad man like Danny Mager. He's a good man. He spends his evening picking up discarded bottles and kebab boxes from common grounds all the while tutting about the slip in standards in society. He can also be found on sunday mornings helping Sheffield City Council clear up the puddles of sick left over from the night before as the appearance of the city is something very close to his heart. He helps old ladies across roads and occasionally fellates desperate old men to prevent them sex offending.
Apart from that he's a DON dj. Y'get me.
Brukbear. I was all for continuing to call it brukbeat but the aforementioned good man/dj/stoat thing convinced me over a glass of mead that no one knew what the flibbin be jesus i was on about. :loopy:
Vex'd - on Planet Mu, instrumental grime don. Used to get a lot of airplay through J Da Flex. Dirty as hell, hard, hard (to me) noisy grime Scarystep. But wicked, excellent rhythms, top notch production.
He used to only send stuff 'round on Dub for ages 'n ages, then he's just brought out an album which has been picked up on by all the arty record-shop types, and good for him. Its selling really well.
Bully_Beef 12-09-2005, 13:06 Welchie - "Brukbeat" always worked for me, I have to say. But maybe i'm just a crazy fool who hasn't been supping enough mead recently.
Can't add much to Iffy's piece about Vex'd there. Everyone should check out the OUR SOUND EP (Vex'd and others on Pitch Black records). It's really all about SEARCH & DESTROY.
NOW THAT IS HEAVY
need those guys up in Sheff sharpish
 Man its so, so hard but so, so good. I put LION (VIP) from the Vex'd album on a mixtape for my friend and I think it scared the life out of him. Bless.
I know this has turned into a dubstep swoonarama thread, but i'm still such an obsessive of Horsepower Productions, have you heard the album 'To The Rescue'? I'm sure you have. Dope beyond belief.
Bully_Beef 12-09-2005, 13:25 Hmmm, yes, hope we’re not annoying everyone. Have heard the odd Horsepower tune on mixtapes and that, but don’t have the plates in my collection… that must be remedied!
I have been scaring people witless for a while now by playing them Search & Destroy’s “Food Chain”. Crank up that bass and sit on it, bitch!
welchiewelch 13-09-2005, 13:55 I haven't got a clue about this music u lot are going on about. Need to hear some then, so I can cheer or sneer.
I think you'd love Horsepower Productions.. check out the album! It makes garage seem almost classy.
BRINGITON 13-09-2005, 14:32 Scaring the life out of me this is, not sure I want to hear it - I might not be man enough! ;)
When's the Vex'd fella playing then? I've not heard of C90:confused:

BRINGITON 13-09-2005, 15:33 Thanks for that Iffy mate, there's all sorts of badness to wade through there.
I've been having a peek at your site too, best get you a CD in the post asap. Although I'm a slack b'stard so that might take months!
Wicked! Spread the word too.. we'll have as many Sheffield peeps on board as possible. Dont worry about the time, Phonetics took 9 months ;)
BRINGITON 14-09-2005, 14:16 Ta mate, I've got a house CD all ready to roll (Lawnchair Generals, Inland Knights etc) so will bomb that over asap, but I wanna do a broken beatsy-typa thing too, so that can come your way upon completion.
Should be with you within the next few months then!
ooohhh man ABOUT TIME: Skream - Late Night Request Line has FINALLY got a release on promo..
I dunno if anyone follows this side of things, but this record was pressed onto a few dubs ages ago and became absolutely massive down in the big smoke, and you couldnt get your hands on it for love nor mothers.
I think the delay might have been TEMPA records grabbing it for release on theirs. Its released on Monday, but only a very limited promo run..

How exciting.. :)
Bully_Beef 16-09-2005, 08:03 Morning Iffy.
I think this was actually available at dubplate.net for ages (as a dubplate), which was a great website, but it's been shut down for the last 6 weeks. Been struggling to get my hands on any new stuff ever since, cos Juno's not too hot for dubstep... and well pricey. :gag:
Yup yup, I first heard it on Dubplate.net, but its only a soundfile - I dont think you can actually order a lot of dub stuff on there. . Every time I tried I just got a 'not available yet' link :( Has it been shut down now?
I have to stick up for Juno! About half of their Garage section is now dubstep and the SKREAM tune is £4.70! Beats Reflex's £7 'Imported.. from london' nonsense :suspect:
I'm just a big juno groupie really. I love the place :)
Bully_Beef 16-09-2005, 10:05 Well, to be fair, I do order a shizz-load of stuff from Juno, and they've always got some cracking releases in, but once they add the postage on, the old wallet takes a royal bumming....
Dubplate.net is apparently "under construction", so hopefully it will be less of a sticky mess when it re-opens (if it ever does).
Reflex take the pizz, with their tattered, greasy-finger-marked, £8-a-pop "dubplates".
You up to much at the weekend Bulleh? I cant wait until Dubplate.Net reopens, there's always stuff you cant find ANYWHERE else eh. I wonder who runs it?
Fopp in manchester stocks a little bit of these.
Also big apple in croydon but i've ordered from these and their website seems to have disappeared.
Piccadilly Manchester has a bit too.
I'll play a little bruk tunes tonight "Common Ground upstairs @ Sharkeys" not too much mind!

Easy Iff. I believe it was started by Mr. Kode9 himself..
As for this weekend, got to get promoting for me new night starting on Wednesday… “Gravy Train” @ Bar Matrix… It’s gonna be a brimming hatfull of Hip-Hop, Funk, Broken-Beats, Soul, Disco and some quality RnB. ;)
Better get a thread up on here, eh? Soon as I know what the drinks deals are…
What you up to?
Promoting all weekend? Oh man the amount of weekends lost to getting wallpaper paste on your best shoes and no sleep 'till sunday night.. eek, dont envy you! :P Make sure you slip a notice here (http://www.iffypop.com/forum) an' all, its just started, so quiet, but it cant hurt! You dunna even need to register.
Dont think there's much on my agenda this weekend.. I spent all my beer money midweek so prolly just stay in playing.. records, ps2.. same old student weekend. Crazy as!
