View Full Version : Leeds festy round up
Well after sleeping for 14 hours the other night I've just about recovered!
What did folk enjoy the most about the classic bank holiday festival debuachery?!
I enjoyed Roots Manuva, Razorlight, the good weather and the fact that you didn't have to que for a drink...!
Even spotted a few minor celebrities...Fiz from Corrie for one!
I had an awesome time, highlights for me were NOFX, Razorlight, Foo Fighters and as ashamed I am to admit it Marilyn Manson - damn good show!!!
The weather held out most of the weekend which was great, although getting soaked within 30 minutes of getting there on Thursday was not so good - nothing a beer coat couldn't protect you from though ;-)
I had the sleep of champions on Sunday night, uninterrupted for 13 hours and I could've gone longer if it weren't for work dammit!!!
Damn you all! I'm so jealous. I've been the past 4 years and was meant to be going to Prague instead this year but not even doing that now. :(
I went on the sunday and the highlights for me were Razorlight, Kings of Leon, Juliette Lewis' band and Foo Fighters. Foo Fighters especially were awesome, best live band i've ever seen- and i've been to loads. Dave Grohl just oozes energy on stage and that radiated to the crowd. What a moshpit!
The Charlatans were disapointing for me, they looked out of their depth at a rock festival. I'm a big fan of their's as well. The two kids they brought on stage were cute though!
I was gutted that we couldn't get in the tent to watch the Arctic Monkey's as well because it was packed out. I still haven't see Sheffield's finest live!
thought it was funny when that madhead Juliette in the red jumpsuit stage dived and got carried round the crowd for a bit!
Yeah- she's off her head! saw a comedian in the comedy tent as well who was dead funny but I can't remember his name. He's famous, speaks a bit camp and he's been on that 8 out of 10 cats on BBC1.

I’ve never seen such a bad set by NOFX, Fat Mike being ill wasn’t helped by all those bloody Iron Maiden fans just looking borted and standing around at the front trying to get a good spot.
Capdown were pvery good, but I was blown away by Bad Religion and Anti-Flag. I think for next year they need to invest in some screen for the NME tent however.
love_hearts 30-08-2005, 11:51 I saw Fizz from Corrie too!! And Scott Windsor off Emmerdale.
Highlights for me were definitely the Foo Fighters, the Killers, Razorlight. Also thought Kings of Leon & All American Rejects were good, not really listened to their stuff before. Ended up with a smashing bruise from going head first over the barrier after the Killers set.
Ed Burne did a good set on the comedy stage too. It was my first festival and I was well impressed. Will be the first of many.
Ahh yes Mrs Bacala spotted yon lad from Emmerdale....being accosted by teenage girls surprise surprise!
Disco_Cat 30-08-2005, 13:21 Strange how little coverage the looting and rioting has got this year. It was the worst I’ve seen it but they only briefly mentioned it on the news and didn‘t show any footage or pictures.
There were some drunken idiots there this year. There was this one kid when I was at the front for The Charlatans who had this flag on a stick but he wasn't holding it properly and it kept flying into this lasses face so she couldn't see. When her boyfriend ragged it out of the way and said his girlfriend couldn't see the bloke just shrugged his shoulders and gave him the evil eye for the rest of the set. If he'd have kicked off me and my brother were gonna back the kid and his girlfriend up. He was a right ********.
Top day though. As I said the Foo Fighters were out of this world. I wanna be Dave Grohl!

I think you mean Jimmy Carr but he speaks properly as opposed to "camp".

Did anyone see the Pixies play ?
Fantomas 30-08-2005, 17:47 Yeah, Pixies were excellent. They were effortlessly cool, flawless and assured. I thought Kim Deal's face was going to fall off she was grinning so much all the way through the set.
Other highlights for me were Arcade Fire (seeing them again at Leadmill on Thursday!), The Blood Arm (fronted by a mad guy who looked like a cross between Maradonna and Jim Morrison), Arctic Monkeys (was surprised that they actually lived up to the hype), British Sea Power and the always excellent Iron Maiden.
Marilyn Manson was also very good, even though I personally can't stand the bloke or his music.
Had a top weekend all round, much beer, much music (worked out I saw 37 acts over the weekend!), and even though I was camped very close to it I saw none of the rioting (the large amounts of vodka we were having back at the tent may have something to do with that).

It wasn't Jimmy Carr. But I think his second name was Carr. He wore glasses as well! Damn, what was his name?!
I went to reading as had friends going there - great band, great weather, great atmosphere and not to hard to get to from sheffield - 2 hours 40 minutes direct on the train.
The big suprises for me were Kasabian - had a difficult time deciding between them and the Pixes but think i made the right choice - the test atmosphere was amazing.
The best stage show had to be Marilyn Manson.
Best small band i found was the Sub Way - they really got the crowd going.
As always, Goldie Looking Chain managed to get everyone enjoying themselves nice and early in the day.
Will be a difficult decision where to go next year, leeds or reading - i've been to leeds twice before and while the venues have been bigger in the past there always seems to be trouble in the camp site on the sunday night. Friends of mine went and got their tent burnt down this year and had to sleep in the car as they were over the limit - not the best end to an otherwise great weekend.
The comedian's name was Alan Carr!!!!! Flash of inspiration!!!!!!
The Arctic Monkeys rocked, I was front centre, only a couple of (squashed) people in front of me. Intense to say the least :)
The NME tent was so disappointing - the bands in there were fantastic (Kasabian, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, Maximo Park etc) but you could hardly see a thing unless you were front centre. Definately agree with the earlier poster that they need some TV screens.
Also managed to catch The Harrisons - another decent Sheffield band looking great on stage.
Show of the weekend had to be Foo Fighters I guess but I think minus the impressive light show and the atmosphere, it probably wouldn't have been as good.
sheff_minx 30-08-2005, 20:51 Why has only one person mentioned The Killers?? They were awesome! Elbow and The Coral dissapointed though - too much new stuff and even though we were only 4 rows from the front, the crowd didn't seem to get into them very much.
Saw some VERY funny people in the comedy tent - Jason John Whitehead and Christian Reiley stood out the most. Christain Reiley had everybody in stiches taking the p*** out of the security steward wearing a Burberry cap (serves him right!!).
Also enjoyed LCD Sound System and Mylo (who was much better than when he played at Republic in Sheff a few months back!),
All together a mighty good weekend despite throwing our tent away at 8.30 on Thursday night in order to buy a bigger, more waterproof one!!... I think I might go back next year.
I wasn't there, for the first time in years, but from what I seen of the line up , and I didnt look to close, I would have clocked:
Ladytron
Sleater Kinney, and
LCD sound system
Anyone anything to report on any?
aaaa....sleater Kinney.,.,.,.,

Caught the last half of Sleater Kinney, thought they were very good even though I wasn't familiar with much of their stuff. Riot Grrrl lives!

I would think so - they said they'll have a new studio album out so I'll be amazed if they don't tour.
Geordiecarl 31-08-2005, 11:05 Arctic monkeys rocked my world, the whole tent erupted and sang the first verse of mardy bum while alex just stood back. It really was a moment, i mean they havent even released the track!
I ended up sacrificing the killers for kasabian since i missed them last year, i knew how busy is was going to get, i was right down there and i wouldnt have changed it for the world. OOOFFF NA NA NA NA NNAA NAAHH
i did see black rebel motorcycle club before hand who also rocked, especially spread your love!
Foo fighters and queens also played stormers, loved the laser show at foos
I fell asleep in the toilets on thursday night, the smelly ones at the campsite (poo wee)

Yeah they were top. highlight of their set for me tho was this lad with an umbrella sat on top of someones shoulders waving the bloody thing about and blocking everyones view of the screens at the back...he was raising his arms to the crowd, thinking he was a superstar and acting like everyone had come to see him and not The Killers!
this went for a few minutes till he started getting pelted with cups etc..and he soon got down!...proper ****** on his chips
its not my bag, so i opted out of a weekend ticket, especially with such a crap line up. however, ms minx went full hog and enjoyed it.
i did manage to bag a cheap sunday ticket and get down for what was the best day, lineup wise.
however, upon getting there was disappointed by it all.
as a creamfield/gg/gcss do'er i thought the whole setup was really poor. stage tents were way too close to each other. stage tents were too small.
- you got babyshambles (guaranteed to get loads of attention) playing in a small 3000 capacity tent? not gonna work.
then you got extremely large stages like the main one.
- you got 50000 people wanting to see mr foo fighter, not gonna work!
you need speakers every 10k people, more screens etc...
was a really poor effort i thought.
on the plus, the foo's played good tracks and the laser show they put on was amazing.
laura_beth 01-09-2005, 15:03 my faves were the killers and the foo fighters! they were brill! weren't enjoyin the rioting after though on sunday nite-i was camping quite near it and the security were terrible-beating innocent people up etc-never been so scared in all my life! yeah, there was some idiots who decided to set the bins on fire and try n pull the lamp posts down but the security made matters alot worse.....dint get to sleep until 7am! absolute nightmare and really made me re-consider whether i want to go to leeds festival again! u shud ave a look at some of the storys in the forum on the nme website! scary! xx
